Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve students' writing skills in English using Think Pair Share Learning Strategy. The method for this research is Classroom Action Research. The researcher will try to use the Think Pair Share strategy properly to solve problems in Teaching Writing at BIT BINA AULIA Vocational High School. The object of the research in this study is grade 10 students. Think Pair Share not only makes students think individually but also builds Communication Skills when all students are asked to present and share their thoughts and the result of discussions with their partners, or in front of the class. This research is established in two cycles within four steps for each cycles: plan, action, observation, and reflection. In reflections, the researcher finds things to improve the next cycle. Students’ worksheets have to show a good result to see how much students have improved their writing skills in hope and conclusion that the Think Pair Share Learning strategy can be used as a variation of learning to improve English writing skills

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe Lucy’s thoughts, feelings, and actions in C.S. Lewis’s novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The problem that formulated in the research will be answered based on Lucy’s thoughts, actions, and feelings and then describe it. The main source for this research was C.S. Lewis’s novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. This novel is considered as a children’s literature. The focus and the data for this research were events in the novel which showing Lucy’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. The data were analysed by using qualitative content analysis. The instrument was the researcher himself. There are four criteria: credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability, which the researcher used in order to make trustworthiness. The findings showed that this novel contains children’s empowerment. Children empowerments are considered as important aspects in children’s story and it has great influence to enrich children’s intelligence and emotion in their growing period, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe can be categorized as a good novel.

Abstract

This research was conducted based on the phenomenon happened in the school. The students had low ability in grammar. They got difficulty in constructing sentences by using some tenses. Therefore, this thesis discussed the error analysis on using simple past tense in writing recount text. The purpose of this research was to classify the types of errors made by the students and find out the sources of errors which students made on using past tense in writing recount text. This research was conducted based on descriptive qualitative analysis. The subjects of the research were the students at the first semester of SMA Mardi Yuana Depok Class X Social III which consisted of 20 students, it was considered by using purposive sampling technique. In collecting the data, this research used writing task to identify the students‟ errors on using action verb in writing recount text based on linguistic category taxonomy and sources of errors according to Brown’s theory. The result of the research showed that there were 4 types of errors made by the students. The highest two common errors were Misinformation errors 30 or 37,5% and Omission errors 24 or 30 %. The lowest two errors were Addition errors that were 14 items or 17,5% and Mis-ordering with 12 items or 15%. Based on the total result types of errors, this research found that Interlingual Transfer was the major source of errors made by the students.

Abstract

Language is a basic need to our existence of life since speaking, listening, reading, and writing are such fundamental aspects of our daily lives. Those aspects are substantial in establishing social interaction and seizing fabulous achievements as well. However, some people suffered from injured brain, mental retardation, and autism who experienced difficulties such as speech disorder and language disorder. This research was designed to identify types of words utterances and types of language disorder that produced by an autistic savant character in the Rain Man movie. By conducting qualitative research with psycholinguistic approaches, this study revealed the autistic savant characters of the producing utterances, namely articulation disorder, phonological disorder, voice disorder and repetition. By developing people’s knowledge and awareness on the autistic language disorder, this study enlightened people to communicate and understand autistic person in their surroundings and prevented miscommunication as well. Further research is expected to be administered, particularly on an autistic woman to explore comprehensive knowledge and understanding on autistic language disorder.

Abstract

The aim is to determine the effect of vocabulary mastery and motivation to improve descriptive writing skills. Writing must be applied in class according to the right formula and obtained through practice. The accuracy of this learning formulation requires motivation because it will be able to improve the quality of student learning more diligently when they have high motivation. Motivation can always determine the intensity of learning efforts and learning achievement for students. This research was conducted in class XI SMA Negeri in Purwakarta District, Purwakarta Administrative City, West Java Province, for the 2017/2018 academic year. In this area, there are 2 public high schools that will be used as sources of research data, namely SMA Negeri 2 Purwakarta and SMA Negeri 1 Purwakarta. The method used is a survey with a questionnaire on 60 randomly selected students. The results of this activity have a significant effect on the use of learning motivation on students' descriptive text writing skills as evidenced by the value of sig. 0.000 < 0.05. There is a significant influence between vocabulary mastery on students' descriptive text writing skills which is indicated by the value of sig. -0.010 < 0.05. And, there is a significant effect of using learning motivation and vocabulary mastery on students' descriptive text writing skills with a sig value. 0.000 < 0.05.

Abstract

This research was conducted because students lack in mastering English vocabulary. The data on the field shows that lack of vocabulary is caused by learning materials that are not quite interesting. Therefore, students have difficulty in learning and mastering the material. Since the problems in the field, the researcher tries to apply origami as learning media which attracts students in order to make the learning process interesting and appealing. This research aims to find out the effectiveness of using OPIVO as media learning in teaching vocabulary at seventh grade MTS Mualimin Muhammadiyah of Yogyakarta. The research was conducted at MTS Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah of Yogyakarta in the academic year 2019/2020. This research was an experimental research. This design used two groups, namely the experiment group and the control group, which were randomly chosen to consist of VIIB and VIIC. In this research, the experiment class was given treatment while the control class did not. The collected data used pre-test and post-test. Then, the analysis technique used by SPSS followed by a t-test. The result of the research concluded that using OPIVO as learning media was effective in teaching vocabulary. The t-test result t-count: 2845 and t-table: 1,71387, because Tcount> Ttable, so that the Ho was rejected.Therefore OPIVO (Origami Pinch of Vocabulary) as a learning media was effective to use in learning vocabulary. It can be seen from the data that post-test was better than pre-test. The mean of pre-test was 72.97 and the mean of post test was 77.43. The data shows significant increasing for improving vocabulary in MTS Muhammadiyah Mua’llimin Yogyakarta.

Abstract

This research aims to identify types of code-switching and code-mixing found in some of “Murder on The Orient Express” movie dialogues and utterances. The source of the data in this research is the dialogue in Murder on The Orient Express movie. To achieve the aims of this research; the researcher uses the descriptive qualitative research method. This study uses the code-switching theory of Wardhaugh (1986) and code-mixing theory of Suwito (1983). There are two types of code-switching consisting of metaphorical code-switching and situational code-switching and two types of code-mixing consisting of outer code-mixing and inner code-mixing. From the results of this study, the authors found 50 data of code-mixing and code-switching and as many as 4 or 8% metaphorical code-switching data, 2 or 4% situational code-switching data. The author also found 44 or 88% outer code-mixing data, and 0 or 0% inner code-mixing data. The research’s result shows that the dominant form of code-switching and code-mixing is metaphorical code-switching and outer code-mixing.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the students’ perception of the use of Google Classroom Application in learning reading. It based on the research problem that the students still adapting to the recent online learning in this pandemic situation. Students also have not fully participated in online learning, especially in reading class. The research used a qualitative method. The population in this research was the students of Universitas PGRI Yogyakarta, and the sample was the third-semester students of the English Language Education Study Program. The number of samples was 10 students. The samples were taken by using a random sampling technique. The data were collected through interviews and analyzed by using descriptive analysis through transcribing the data, member checking, and coding the data. The result showed that students’ perceptions of the use of Google Classroom Application in learning reading during online classes in this pandemic situation were positive. They stated that online learning by using Google Classroom Application in reading class was efficient and enjoyable. They enjoyed the learning activity although they cannot interact directly with the lecturer and their classmates. Minor issues such as internet connectivity, student idleness, and a lack of direct interaction with the professor were encountered by students during the online learning process, but these issues had no impact on their ability to learn to read. It may be deduced from their comment that, despite having various issues with internet connectivity and learning motivation, they are able to enjoy the learning process and participate effectively in it.

Abstract

Problems that arise during online learning must be addressed immediately, including learning to read English. Many students do not achieve effective learning and tend to rely on smartphones instead of using the results of their own ideas and thoughts. The SQ3R method is a method for learning reading that can help students understand English texts with the analysis stage and generate ideas and creativity from their own minds. This study aims to determine: How to implementation SQ3R method in online English learning. This research is a qualitative research by describing how the implementation of the SQ3R method and the results of the SQ3R method that have been carried out online. The participants in this study were 25 students of grade 8F at SMP N 1 Tempel . Collecting data in the form of student interview questionnaires, transcripts of teacher interviews and photos of the implementation of the SQ3R method online. Through research instruments in the form of interviews, questionnaires and documentation. The collected data were analyzed descriptively in the form of presentation tables and presentation of interview transcripts and questionnaires. The first stage of data collection in this study was teacher and student interviews, then applied the SQ3R method to students and documentation of the results of the SQ3R method applied by students. The results of implementation of SQ3R method indicate that the SQ3R method can be applied online by enabling teachers to create media that can help students understand the SQ3R method.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to discuss the effect of flashcards on teaching speaking. The purpose of this research is to find out whether Flashcard is effective for teaching speaking during online learning. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a one group pre-test and post-test design. There are two variables in this study; namely the independent variable and the dependent variable, while the independent variable is Flashcard and the dependent variable is the result of the post test (students' speaking ability). The population in this study were students of class XI Mutiara Bangsa 2. The sample of this study amounted to 13 people. This study uses only one instrument. It is an oral speaking test. Furthermore, the process instrument was used pre-test and post-test. In addition, the researcher collected data by assessing students' vocabulary and fluency. As a result, the data showed that there was a significant difference between the post-test students in the experimental class and the control class. The post-test P-value is lower than the significance level which indicates that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test mean.
