Abstract

Culture shock occurs because of the culture gap and differences, such as habit, behaviour, values, religion, tradition, and other cultural aspects. The symptoms of a sojourner who fights the shock are explained by the factors of culture shock and how they combat the cultural changes that are causing the shock which described in four stages. This study aims to elucidate the existence factor of culture shock and the stage of culture shock that corresponds to the protagonist of the novel "She Who Smells Turmeric". This study is an application of the culture shock stage theory carried out by Karvelo Oberg in 1960. Researcher used romances as data sources and scenes from novels as the data. The research method is a descriptive qualitative method. Researchers collected data by repeatedly reading the novel and highlighting scenes that could be considered as data. The researcher applied interactive analysis, which he performed three steps such as data reduction, data display, and data inference. As a result of collecting and analysing the data, the researchers found 26 data found as features of the culture shock phenomenon and 84 data found as four features to explain the factors that referred to CeCe as a guest who fought culture shock in Jakarta. We found 110 data consisting of data. Culture shocks CeCe after graduating from Los Angeles.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mendeskripsikan kepribadian Owen Gardy dalam Film “Jurassic World” Karya Colin Trevorrow Tahun 2015 melalui pendekatan psikologis berdasarkan teori Sigmund Freud yang membagi kepribadian menjadi tiga bagian, yaitu id, ego, dan superego. Metode penelitian yang digunakan untuk menganalisis film ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini di temukan 24 data kepribadian tokoh utama dalam film “Jurassic World” Karya Colin Trevorrow Tahun 2015. Adapun kepribadian yang dimiliki adalah ego 11 data (46%), id sebanyak 9 data (38%), dan superego sebanyak 4 data (17%). Abstract The purpose of this research is to describe the personality of Owen Gardy in Colin Trevorrow's 2015 film "Jurassic World" through a psychological approach based on Sigmund Freud's theory which divides personality into three parts, namely the id, ego, and superego. The research method used to analyze this film is a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this study found 24 data on the personality of the main character in the film "Jurassic World" by Colin Trevorrow in 2015. The personality possessed is 11 data (46%), id as much as 9 data (38%), and superego as much as 4 data (17%)

Abstract

The journal is entitled The Analysis of American Slang in The Kissing Booth Movie.  The purpose of this analysis is to find out whether primary slang and secondary slang are used by the characters in the film or not, as well as to find the type of meaning of the slang meaning based on the context of the situation of the word itself. The data used is taken from the script of the film entitled 'The Kissing Booth'. The documentation method is used to collect data and qualitatively will be explained by the theory proposed by Chapman (2007) which divides the types of slang into Primary Slang and Secondary Slang.  The  functions of language include communication,  the  expression  of  identity,  play, imaginative expression, and emotional release. In addition, the theory proposed by Leech (1981) divides the types of meaning into seven types including conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, affective meaning, reflected meaning, collective meaning, and thematic meaning. Slang that is found in the script of the film, and there     are several types of secondary slang also found in the script. Among the seven types of meaning, only conceptual meaning, reflected meaning, and affective meaning were found. The meaning of these slang words is in accordance with the context in which the word is used. Language, is a system of conventional spoken,  manual  (signed),  or  written symbols by means of which human beings, as members of a social group and participants in its culture, express themselves.

Abstract

This research discusses the narrative functions and sphere of actions that appear in The Northman movie using Vladimir Propp’s theory.  The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the narrative functions and Proppian archetypes, then find out how many of them contain in The Northman movie. The writer uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the obtained data. The results show that there are 19 out of 31 narrative functions and 5 out of 7 Proppian archetypes found in The Northman movie. The narrative functions found in the movie are Absentation, Reconnaissance, Delivery, Trickery, Villainy, Mediation, Beginning of Counteraction, Departure, First Function of The Donor, The Hero’s Reaction, Receipt of a Magical Agent, Guidance, Struggle, Victory, Pursuit, Rescue, Difficult Task, Solution, and Exposure. The Proppian archetypes in the movie are Hero, Villain, Donor, Helper, and Dispatcher. This research shows that the theory can be applied in analyzing Old-Norse-influenced epic, and several characters in a story have a specific function that drives the stages in a narrative.

Abstract

In expressing emotive feelings, people tend to use bad language by uttering taboo words. Although taboo words are considered offensive and are prohibited in society, taboo words are still uttered by some people and are not even censored in movies. This research aims to identify the types of taboo words and to identify the function of taboo words uttered in Euphoria Season 1 Episode: Shook Ones Pt. II. The data of this research are in the form of sentence or dialogue containing taboo words which are found in the transcript of the series. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were classified based on Battistella’s theory of types of taboo words and Wardhaugh’s theory of functions of taboo words. The result of the research shows that there are 107 taboo words found in 78 dialogues in this episode. There are four types of taboo uttered by the characters in the episode, namely obscenity, profanity, vulgarity and epithets. Based on the data analysis, obscenity becomes the most frequently uttered, and vulgarity as well as epithets become the rarely uttered with the same frequency. In analyzing the functions of taboo words, all of the four functions of taboo words are found in the result of the research, namely to draw attention, to show contempt, to be aggressive or provocative, and to mock authority. The most frequently used is the function to draw attention, and the least one is the function to mock authority.

Abstract

This research discussed about subtitling of figurative language in Batwoman drama series. The aims of this research to find kinds of figurative languages used in Batwoman and to identify subtitling techniques used in figurative languages in Batwoman. The researcher use Perrine’s theory to find figurative language and Gottlieb’s theory find subtitling strategies. The researcher focused on each character’s dialogue, those are Batwoman (Kate Kane), Alice, Luke Fox, The method that the researcher used is qualitative method. The result of this research is the researcher found 83 data in the series. For the figurative, the frequency of the data is 16 of simile, 7 of metaphor, 2 of apostrophe, 24 of metonymy, 9 of synecdoche, 1 of symbol, 18 of overstatement, and 6 of irony. For the subtitling strategies, the researcher found 4 of expansion, 2 of paraphrase, 49 of transfer, 26 of imitation, 1 of transcription, and 1 of condensation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify and present the translation techniques used in the film Me Before You. The method in this research is descriptive qualitative, because the data presented is meaningful and can provide a real understanding. From the findings of the translation techniques in the film “Me Before You “founds as many as 446 data, the dominant translation techniques are Modulation as much as 90 data ( 20.2%), reduction 72 data (16.1%), literal translation 62 data ( 13.9%), compensation 46 data ( 10.3%), transposition 45 data ( 10.1%) Linguistics Compression 41 data ( 9,2%), Adaptation 11 data (2.5%), Calque 6 data (1,3%), Variation 3 data ( 0.7%), and Discursive Creation 1 data ( 0.2%).

Abstract

The research goals are to find out some problems of students leaning English and to describe students' reading interest in learning English using online comic applications (webtoon) at Junior High School. This research is a qualitative research.The subjects were seventh grade of Junior High School students. Data collection were interview, observation and documentation. Data analysis consists of data reduction, display and conclusion. Data validity used triangulation of method. The results showed that students have some problems in learning English for reading skill such as they had difficulty reading English and understanding the text given. They are lack in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary mastery. Moreover, the students participation was very low. Webtoon cartoons increased pupils' interest and inspired them to read English. It was discovered that kids became increasingly motivated to study English. They like taking part in class activities. Furthermore, Webtoon Comics assists students in reading because it contains vivid visuals, wonderful storylines, and is digital. It is appropriate, fun and interesting. The pictures provided teaching as well as aroused of curiosity, which can assist pupils in reading more quickly.

Abstract

Language possesses the ability to exert influence over individuals and their behavior, particularly in the realm of advertising. Social media advertisements are not haphazardly constructed but rather meticulously crafted, considering various factors. One such consideration is the intention to entice readers into purchasing the advertised products. Social media platforms employ multiple language styles to create captivating advertisements, each with its unique way of conveying ideas and promoting products. Language styles in social media advertising play a crucial role in capturing the reader's attention. This study aims to identify the language styles employed in Dior Beauty's social media posts and explore how meaning is conveyed to readers through these styles. Qualitative descriptive methods are utilized, focusing on the theory of Pop. Data is collected from Dior Beauty's social media posts on platforms like Instagram, within the 20th February to 20th June timeframe. The findings reveal that Dior Beauty's social media advertisements employ four language styles: morphological, syntactical, rhetorical, and slogan style. Among these, sloganized style stands out as the most frequently used in Dior Beauty's social media posts.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the effectiveness of the phonics method applied for the beginning reading abilities of children aged 4-6 years at the Khalifah Islamic School Kindergarten. This research was carried out through classroom action research, which was carried out on children aged 4-6 years consisting of 2 classes. For each class a sample of 19 students was taken. This research method uses an ex post facto method using a quantitative approach with data analysis techniques using a difference test with ? = 0.05 and dk = n1. With an average final score (X) of 64.39, Median 8.5, Mode 17.5, Variance 92.88, Standard Deviation 9.63, Highest Value 76, and Lowest Value 45, while the result (Y) score final average 11.92, Median 14.7, Mode 15.7, Variance 9.59, Standard Deviation 3.09, Highest value 16, and Lowest value 7. After conducting research and processing the data using the mean difference test The average (t), obtained at 27.47 with the criterion ? = 0.05, obtained at 2.04, thus it can be concluded that tcount > ttable, namely 27.47 > 2.04. This means that the hypothesis used is rejection of Ho, and acceptance of H1. After the author analyzed the data at a significant level of ?=0.05, it can be concluded that there is effectiveness of the phonics method in reading early English for children aged 4-6 years at the Khalifah Islamic School Kebayoran Baru Kindergarten, South Jakarta.
