Abstract

Marital dissolution is a major social determinant of health, with enormous and ultimately irreversible consequences for children, the individuals involved, and society as a whole. This study explored the reasons for marital dissolution in Hosanna, Ethiopia.  A phenomenological study was carried out on 29 individuals selected based on their lived experiences of marital breakdown using the maximum variation purposive sampling technique. We used this method to capture a wide range of experiences related to marital dissolution. We delineated a thematic analysis to drive the initial codes directly from the text data. Open Code 4.02 was used to process data. Five themes emerged as drivers of marital breakdown, including socioeconomic reasons, communication and commitment issues, external pressures, attitude and behavioral changes, and disagreements on sexual matters and personal interests. Likewise, four themes emerged to advance the prevention measures of marital dissolution, including 1) commitment to the relationship, 2) improving knowledge and skills in marital relationships, 3) protecting marriages from external stressors, and 4) improving appearance and well-being.  Behavioral changes in marital relationships are one of the causes of marital breakdown. This study implies the need for interventions designed and built in the local context to mitigate the drivers of marital dissolution.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges and opportunities encountered among middle-aged badminton players during home confinement. The study employed a descriptive-exploratory qualitative approach. The researcher used semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observation to collect data from six middle-aged badminton players who met the researcher's criteria. The study's findings revealed that the participants were challenged during home confinement, influencing their athletic performance and health condition. They pointed out that during home confinement, middle-aged badminton players encountered challenges that included barriers to improving skills, playing the sport, and health risk factors such as poor lifestyle, seclusion, anxiety, and stress. Playing the sport was hindered by limited experience with peers and limited access to facilities and equipment. More time and practice impeded skill improvement. However, the challenges faced during home confinement motivated the players to seek self-improvement opportunities and enhance their physical and social well-being. The study's results emphasize the need to recognize the effects of pandemics on middle-aged badminton players' performance and well-being. This information is crucial for future research to develop appropriate solutions for individuals facing similar challenges during the pandemic or similar events.

Abstract

Classroom misconduct among students continues to be a challenge, particularly for South African teachers. Senior phase learners in South African schools have demonstrated an alarming amount of misconduct in classroom settings, and this tends to affect students' academic performance as it disrupts the process of teaching and learning. In this study, the researchers tried to examine the perceptions of teachers on the causes of classroom misconduct among senior phase learners in South Africa and how it influences their academic performance. The study adopted a qualitative research approach and employed a phenomenological research design. The sample of the study comprised 12 high school teachers purposefully selected to participate in the study. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that learners' background, attention-seeking, child-headed responsibilities, and teachers’ unpreparedness and inconsistency are among the causes of classroom misconduct among senior phase learners. It was found also that students’ classroom misconduct hinders the teaching and learning process in the classroom, and also interferes with other learners’ learning disrupts the whole process of teaching and learning, and in the long run, affects the academic performance of students. Based on these findings, the study recommended that teachers should give learners full attention at school to reduce distractions in the classroom. The study further recommends that teachers should be professional and serious in handling teaching and learning matters to keep learners busy, this will help to reduce the rate of misconduct among senior phase students.

Abstract

The study explored the perceptions of primary school pupils, secondary, and high school students in the Mezam Division of the North West Region of Cameroon. Existing literature points to declining youth interest in agriculture grounded on a largely negative perception of the sector, however, there is scant data on youth perception of agriculture in Cameroon. In the face of rising youth unemployment, there is a need to generate relevant data that can inform policies relating to youth entry and participation in the country’s agriculture. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect data from 7 primary, secondary, and high schools respectively. The data were analyzed using the thematic approach, leading to the emergence of themes. The findings of the study indicate that pupils and students have largely positive perceptions of agriculture which are however not translated into high aspirations for career development in the sector, suggesting a need for targeted actions at various levels of the educational system. Further research that addresses perceived determinants of youth attraction to agriculture in the country, will contribute to informing youth-specific policy towards agriculture.

Abstract

The study delves into societal perceptions and interactions with leprosy-affected individuals in Balang Baru's Leprosy Village, addressing the prevalent negative stigma that shapes their social relationships. While striving for a more inclusive social space, affected individuals often experience alienation, limiting their interactions. Utilizing qualitative methods, including observation, interviews, and documentation, the research focuses on individuals impacted by leprosy, former patients, and the local community. Findings reveal a contrasting dynamic: within Balang Baru, residents view affected individuals as ordinary, fostering acceptance due to shared experiences. However, external societal acceptance remains scarce, hindering their engagement beyond the community. This study underscores the disparities in perception and interaction between internal and external environments. The challenge ahead lies in integrating affected individuals into broader society, necessitating bridging the gap between localized acceptance and the broader societal stigma. Ultimately, the research emphasizes the need to facilitate the inclusion of leprosy-affected individuals in the wider society beyond their immediate community.

Abstract

This study explored the experiences of young mothers in early parenthood. This qualitative study was conducted using the phenomenological method. The seven participants were purposively selected to be interviewed. The data analysis results reveal interesting themes regarding the mothers’ experiences, challenges, coping strategies, and insights during early parenthood. Themes for experiences such as dilemma in providing proper care, feelings of apprehension and shame, failed expectations, society’s judgment, satisfying feeling of achieving motherhood, and lack of time for self are revealed in experiences. Mothers in early parenthood experienced challenges such as being financially incapable, mentally and emotionally unprepared, and unprivileged to finish school. Finding strength from family and God, using personal strategies, and getting support and motivation from the husband are the coping strategies of mothers when dealing with challenges. The mothers’ insights include being prepared for the consequences, parents knowing what is best for us, being a mother is a big shoe to fill, and weighing things wisely. The gathered data from the participants will provide invaluable insights and knowledge that can contribute to the field of social work by strengthening prevention efforts. In addition, by understanding young parents' unique experiences and needs, social workers can develop effective programs and services to help address their challenges. Finally, the younger generation may get a significant takeaway from the study about the experiences and consequences of early parenthood.

Abstract

The implementation of correctional revitalization is not only related to structural adjustments and security protocols at Super Maximum Security (SMAX), Maximum Security (MAX), and Medium Security (MS) correctional facilities; it may also have an impact on changes in officer-inmate interaction patterns and the psychological stress officers. After the implementation of institutional revitalization, this study intends to investigate the patterns of officer-inmate interaction and the levels of stress experienced by correctional institution personnel in Nusakambangan with various degrees of security. Eight officers were interviewed as part of the research approach, which involved descriptive qualitative analysis, in four prisons on Nusakambangan Island. The analysis's findings give an example of the many ways that SMAX, MAX, and MS prison guards and convicts engage with one another. Because of restrictions on prisoners' freedom of movement, the implementation of security measures, and disparities in treatment within the development program, different interaction patterns result. Comparing convicts in XMAX and MAX prisons to those in MS prisons, authorities believe that MS prisoners spend more time outside of their rooms engaging in activities, which could compromise security and order. The result is that because inmates in MS prisons are free to roam the facility, but inmates in SMAX and MAX prisons engage in more activities in their quarters, the stress level for officers in MS prisons is higher than the stress level in SMAX and MAX prisons.

Abstract

Previous literature has highlighted the persistent global challenge of providing quality education in conducive settings for learners with visual impairments (LVIs), particularly in rural schools. This study aims to explore viable resources that can be leveraged to create an enabling learning environment for LVIs within rural primary school contexts. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study engaged 12 teachers from rural mainstream primary schools in Lesotho. Data were gathered through focus group discussions with a purposively selected sample of teachers and analyzed thematically. The findings underscored the perception among participants that rural schools possess a range of assets, both visible and concealed, that effectively cater to the special educational needs of LVIs. However, a notable limitation surfaced regarding the teachers' knowledge about utilizing these existing resources optimally. Consequently, this highlighted a crucial need for enhanced collaboration, involvement of relevant stakeholders, and augmentation of academic resources. The effective utilization of these assets emerges as a pivotal factor requiring improved management to cultivate a more conducive learning environment for LVIs in the future.
