Abstract

This study aimed to describe the students’ perceptions toward the use of a multimodal digital storytelling book in the writing class during COVID-19 pandemic. This research used a descriptive qualitative design. Meanwhile, the participants of this study were twenty students in the second semester of an English language education department in a private university located in East Java. The data were collected through the closed-ended questionnaires which were shared through Google Form. These questionnaires consisted of seven statements related to the use of a multimodal digital storytelling book in their writing class. After all the data were collected, then, the data were tabulated and calculated its frequency for each questionnaire item. The results of questionnaire analysis revealed that more than 85% of the students gave positive perceptions toward the use of a multimodal digital storytelling book in their writing class. Hopefully, the results of this study can become a reference for English teachers especially and language teachers generally when they teach writing online.

Abstract

Textbooks play an important role in teaching and learning. Hence, textbooks are required to meet the standard. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the book "Grow with English book 1" is appropriate to be used as teaching material. Content analysis was conducted by using the standard criteria from Badan Standar Nasional Pendidikan or National Education Standards Agency as well as the criteria of Cunningsworth (1995)'s theory. It was found the book met all the criteria, i.e. material, language, material presentation, and graphical aspects. It can be concluded that the book is suitable to be used in English classroom at elementary school level.

Abstract

This article would like to expose matter of phallocentrism in short story written by Grace Paley entitled Wants. Phallocentrism itself plays role as the dictations of values of male against female beings. Grace Paley’s short story published in 1974 and tells a woman’s perspective that is so slow and simple in wanting anything. Her ex-husband has certain dream to be achieved, but she only wants to be a good mother and be happy. Through qualitative method on cultural studies, this paper depicts dictation of a man to his ex-wife. This is in line with dictation of man in phallocentrism theorized by Ernest Jones. The woman actually has done many intangible things, but those meant nothing for the man as he wants tangible ones. The man wants to run but the woman prefers to walk. Both of them are lost in time of being together since the ex-husband’s side is too dominant for the ex-wife’s part. In conclusion, the short story explains total difference due to radical dominance instead of living dialogues between man and woman.

Abstract

The pandemic has changed the dynamics of the educational system, which has drastically turned toward remote learning. This sudden shift from conventional classroom instruction to online learning has affected the students' performance as second language learners. This study focuses on how undergraduate students perceive language learning anxiety when widespread online learning is implemented. This study used a quantitative approach through an adapted questionnaire to gather perspectives from 168 undergraduate students enrolled in online English language courses at a public institution in Malaysia. An analysis of the items was carried out using SPSS software. The findings showed that communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation are the most prominent factors contributing to students’ language learning anxiety. Test anxiety, on the other hand, was reported to be the least important element. This study suggested that the implementation of online learning may influence the students’ language learning anxiety, and this was further examined along with recommendations for future research.

Abstract

The post-Covid-19 outbreak exposes vulnerabilities in the educational system. The learning process shifts from online to blended learning. This article aims to describe the process of adapting blended learning for English education students. This article discusses the process of applying blended learning to English education students, the difficulties of doing so, and the impact on students who learn using blended learning at IAIN Ponorogo. This research was conducted on 6th-semester English education students at IAIN Ponorogo. The findings of this study show that the lectures were conducted in blended learning in the English education department at IAIN Ponorogo. The students said that blended learning helps them to understand the material easily. The finding of this study also revealed a positive impact experienced by students. Adaptive blended learning provides the students with new experiences as it combines virtual face-to-face learning and classroom interaction.

Abstract

Poetry is characterized as a kind of literature or creative writing that uses a variety of poetic approaches to stimulate the reader's emotions and imagination. This study focuses on the metaphorical expression used in poetry in the book "The Everyday Poet" by Deborah Alma. The objectives of this study are to determine the types of metaphors reflected in Deborah Alma’s poetry book "The Everyday Poet," to find out the most common types of metaphors used, and to explain the meaning of the metaphors contained in the poems. The methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative research. The data were obtained through library research and a variety of literature to present a descriptive issue. The result of this study showed that there are twelve metaphors in the book "The Everyday Poet." There are six anthropomorphic metaphors, one animal metaphor, two abstract to concrete metaphors, and three synesthetic metaphors, and based on the data, the most commonly used metaphor is anthropomorphic metaphor, which has six lines in the book "The Everyday Poet" by Debora Alma.

Abstract

Classroom language shapes the way teachers communicate/ Interact in the classroom. Based on medium of Instruction the teacher has to be aware of the language phrases and expressions appropriate for the classroom situations. The NCF National Curriculum Framework (2005, 2009) of India mentioned the need of classroom English for teachers. The importance of classroom communication is highlighted in the B.ED. syllabuses prepared by the NCERT (National Council for Educational Research and Training) and SCERTs (State Council of Educational Research and Training). The present study considers the need for classroom English for pre-service teachers before they enter the profession. Previous research studies included testing of the classroom English language proficiency of in-service teachers of English subject. In addition to that, current study focuses on pre-service teachers of all subjects and their awareness of classroom English. For this purpose an online test was conducted with 36 pre-service teachers from different B.Ed. Institutions, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, India. The results indicate that pre-service teachers should be given training to raise their awareness of Communicative English language phrases and expressions used for different classroom situations such as classroom management, content delivery, and feedback. The study has got implications for verbal and non-verbal classroom communication, and use of L2 (Second language) for classroom purposes.

Abstract

The influence of modern technology and engagement in cyber socialising have become a prominent part of modern communication. A new learning pedagogy with proper guidelines is needed to assist users to engage with social networking platforms efficiently. The researcher investigated discourse analysis involving participants to answer questions about both the contextual application of the language, and the functions and results of aspects pertaining to discourse such as diction, cohesion, and metaphors. The researcher employed a quantitative approach in this study. The study randomly sampled 80 students from a University of Technology (UoT) in Gauteng to participate in quantitative discourse analysis of communication using Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter texts. The methods of data elicitation embraced extracts from Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter texts provided by 80 participants. Statistics were used to present the findings of the quantitative data which included mainly frequency of certain aspects pertaining to discourse. Data were collected via email and texts were numbered according to the participants. These texts remain anonymous and the identities of the participants were concealed. The study found that the language used on Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter was characterised by the use of emoji, low register words, code-switching few spelling errors and the modern tendency to shorten words by using clipping and number homophones which are not seen as errors but a unique style of writing. Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter remain three popular communication sites and discourse surfaces since it is important for users to communicate meaningfully even when using excessive punctuation to indicate excitement and emoji to communicate emotions.

Abstract

This research describes the use of NaturalReader in teaching listening TOEFL. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The analysis shows that NaturalReader is an AI-powered free text-to-speech service online which helps teachers/lecturers to teach English. In teaching English, especially listening to TOEFL, an English lecturer in ITB AAS Indonesia uses face-to-face learning combined with Zoom and Live YouTube streaming. The lecturer uses NaturalReader Text-to-Speech (TTS) in teaching listening TOEFL including Part A (short dialogue), Part B (long dialogue), and Part C (monologue). The lecturer opens the NaturalReader application, then clicks the + icon to input the words, phrases, or sentences that she/he wants to listen to the audio with their pronunciation. NaturalReader offers female and male voices and variation accents for both free and paid users. This software is capable of converting text into sound in multiple languages, including English with diverse accents, such as British or American. In teaching listening TOEFL, pronunciation especially accent cannot be separated from listening. In listening, the presence of several accents, the speakers’ speed, and the speaker’s intonation from native speakers on listening tests may threaten test fairness. By using the NaturalReader app, the students can learn to listen to how the word/phrase/sentence is pronounced differently with different accents and voices as they want. It means that the students study listening also pronunciation. When students understand correct pronunciation, students will understand English listening easier because they will learn to identify the sounds directly from native speakers.

Abstract

The development of a Teaching Plan for a Semester (TPS) is directly related to the analysis of competency standards, teaching methods, and learning evaluation. Based on that, the specific targets to be achieved in this research include two things. The two objectives are (i) to formulate graduates' English learning outcomes based on needs analysis and objective analysis of input English proficiency and (ii) to design learning materials to meet the formulated learning outcomes. In general, the research method used is the development research method of Gall, Borg, Van den Akker, Gravemeijer, McKenney, and Nieven. Meanwhile, the approach used in this study is a combination of the ADDIE approach from Branch and the systems approach from Dick and Carey. The results of the study show that the level of English language needs indicated by stakeholders must be adapted. This adaptation is based on input competencies that do not meet the standards to be put into the ESP stage purely. Therefore, the design of the ESP lesson plan is still carried out by considering matters related to the input of general English competence.
