Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The stratigraphy of bottom sediments was investigated in eastern waters of RupatStrait, Riau Province in June 2013. The analysis of sediment were conducted by twomethods i.e : grain-size analysis and ignition loss methods. The result showed that thevertical characteristic of bottom sediments changed irregularly. The vertical character-istic change of sediments was represented by the grain-size distribution, both verticallyand horizontally in the area. The similiarity of sediment characteristic among the sta-tions also represented by a cluster analysis. The cluster analysis showed that the sedi-ments were divided into four clusters which showed clearly the different of sedimentcharacteristic between station in this area.

Abstract

In order to fulfill a prerequisite domesticated and culture of climbing perch, anexperiment have been executed to spawn the fish in the circular concrete tank ofdiameter 1,2 m x 0,5 m in depth with 6 – 8 cm water depth and in the wooden tankcovered with blue color plastic of 1 m x 2.5 m x 0.5 m with water depth of 23 – 25cm. Into the respective tanks spawned mature climbing perch of 7 – 18 cm in lengthwith sex ratio of one female and two male broodstocks and two pairs of male andfemale broodstock with several water hyacinth. The broodstocks were feed on ricebrean and old water hyacinth as detritus. Water temperature was around 22 – 32 oC.Within three weeks the fish spawned and hundred of fish larvae of 1 – 1,5 cm inlength of two weeks old were found with survival rate less than one percent.Meanwhile within the next two weeks the fish grow to 2 – 2,5 cm with body colordarkened. Hence, the successful of climbing perch spawn in the control environmentwithout any modification of its condition support that the fish is well domesticatedand further hatchery development for the fish as well as its culture in the pond andfloating cage are feasible. However further study on proper sex-ratio, hatchery designand engineering, as well nurturing of larvae are a new interesting challenge.

Abstract

Study on the effects of oil content on the macrozoobenthic community in thecoastal waters receiving oil refinery effluents has been conducted. Samples ofwater and sediment were collected in August 2006 from three stations in oilrefinery and one control station in far distance from the oil refinery area. Waterquality parameters measured in the present study were still in the tolerable levelfor the aquatic biota. Oil content in the stations close to the oil refinery (10.17 -12.17 ppm and 11.17 - 15.42 ppm) was higher than the control station (6.92 and6.17 ppm) at high and low tide respectively. The abundance of macrozoobenthicat the control station (333.23 id/m2) was higher that the oil refinery (151.50 -281.25 ind/m2). Simple linear regression showed that macrozoobenthic abundancewas negatively correlated with oil content in the water column (Y = 431.92 -17.81 X; r = 0.64) and it was positively correlated with total organic matter in thesediment (V = -174.55 + 27.23X: r = 0.69). This study showed that the oil refineryand its related activities have significant contribution to the elevated oil contentand the decreasing water quality which finally affect the macrozoobenthiccommunity structure in the surrounding aquatic environments.

Abstract

In the Siak River, Riau, the water quality in the downstream area is relativelybad due to pollutant originated from several sources such as industrial and domesticwastes. The low quality water may negatively affects the growth of fish and it isreflected in the growth pattern in the otolith of fish living in that river. To understandthe growth pattern in the otolith of Pristolepis grooti (Anabantidae) living in that river,a study has been conducted. Totally 25 fishes were captured from the downstream ofthe Siak River. The otolith were then removed and processed following Windarti(2007)and investigated under a binocular microscope to study the growth ring patternin the otolith. The number of dark growth ring was counted. Results shown that 2 to 5dark growth rings, around 0.086 mm thick were present in the otolith of the fish. Thepresence of the dark growth rings in the otolith indicated that the growth of P. grootiin the downstream of the Siak River was hampered and this fact also suggested that thewater quality in the downstream of the Siak River is not sufficient to support the life P.grooti in that area.
