The EFL Education Journal is one of the professional publications of both the lecturers and teachers’ research findings or conceptual issues of EFL education in and outside the FKIP Jember University. It appears 3 times a year in the months of March, July, and November. The Journal presents information and ideas on English as a foreign language (EFL) learning and teaching. Articles based on the teachers’ research findings are of primary interest and relevance to the EFL teacher training and education. Contributions, which should be original and not published elsewhere, are welcomed from educationists: both the lecturers and students in EFL education. Main articles should be between 1000 and 5000 words in length. Manuscripts for review should be sent to the Editor, EFL Education Journal, Prodi Bahasa Inggris, FKIP Jember.

Abstract

This research was intended to describe the tenth grade students’ narrative writing achievement at SMAN 2 Jember. The area and subjects of this research were chosen purposively by using purposive method. The research design was descriptive study. The research data were obtained by test, interview, and documentation. Based on the research finding dealing with the result of the tenth grade students’ narrative writing achievement at SMAN 2 Jember, it was found that there were 2 students (5,13%) who were categorized as excellent, 13 students (33,33%) who were categorized very good, 12 students (30,77%) who were categorized good, 12 students (30,77%) who were categorized as average, and no student (0%) who were categorized fair, poor, and very poor. This means that the tenth grade students’ narrative writing achievement at SMAN 2 Jember was categorized good.

Abstract

This classroom action research was intended to enhance the eighth grade students’ vocabulary achievement at SMPN 5 Jember by using pelmanism game. Purposive method was used to choose the research area and the research subject. The primary data were collected by using observation and vocabulary test. The supporting data were collected by interview and documentation. Both the results of observation and the vocabulary test were analyzed statistically by using percentage formula. The students’ participation in Cycle 1 was 58.5% and in Cycle 2 was 77%. Meanwhile, the result of students’ vocabulary achievement in Cycle 1 was 75% and in Cycle 2 was 80%. It means that the use of pelmanism game could enhance the students’ vocabulary achievement. Therefore, it is suggested to use pelmanism game to enhance the students’ vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to improve the eleventh grade students'narrative writing achievement and their participation by using roundtable technique atMAN 2 Jember in the 2015/2016 academic year. The research design was classroom actionresearch. The subject area of this research was chosen purposively. The research subjectwas the eleventh science 1 which was chosen based on the observation and the previouswriting score from the English teacher. The data were collected by administering thewriting test, observation, interview and documentation. This research was done in 2 cycles.The results in each cycle showed improvement of the students narrative writingachievement and students' active participation. The results in Cycle 2 had met the criteria ofthe success that indicatedthat the use of roundtable technique could improve the students'narrative writing achievement and also their active participation in teaching and learningprocess of writing at MAN 2 Jember

Abstract

This research was intended to know whether or not there was a significanteffect of using stick figures on the eighth grade students’ reading comprehensionachievement at SMPN 7 Bondowoso in the 2015/2016 academic year. The research designwas Experimental Research. The research area was chosen by using purposive methodwhile cluster random sampling was used to determine the research respondents. The datawere collected by using a test, interview, and documentation. The collected data from thepost test were analyzed by using Independent Sample t-test with SPSS computing system.The analysis results showed that the significant value was 0.009 which was less than 0.05.From the hypothesis verification, it was known that there was a significant effect of usingstick figures on the eighth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement at SMPN 7Bondowoso in the 2015/2016 academic year.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of using processgenre approach on the tenth grade students’ descriptive text writing achievement atSMA Negeri 1 Pakusari. The research design used was quasi-experimental researchwith post-test only control group design. The respondent of the research was chosenby using cluster random sampling. Through a lottery, class X-1 was chosen as anexperimental group and X-2 was chosen as a control group. The data was collectedby writing test and analyzed by using independent sample t-test. The result showedthat the result of t-test analysis was significant. This means that the result of thisresearch proved that the use of process-genre approach significantly affected thetenth grade students’ descriptive text writing achievement at SMA Negeri 1Pakusari.

Abstract

This research was intended to discuss the pedagogical implication of the daily spoken English in a movie. The research design was qualitative and descriptive discourse analysis. The research data were collected through the documentary study of the movie entitled Cinderella (2015). The data were analyzed by using Austin’s speech act theory; the locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. The research results showed that the characters in Cinderella movie mostly used indirect speech act namely expositives illocutionary acts. Such research findings implied that in English education EFL students should learn the illocutionary forces of English as the target language used in the classroom. They should also know that every utterance has three layers of meanings namely the locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act.
