Abstract

This study focuses on EFL teachers’ readiness in using technology in teaching English. According to the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework (Davis, 1989), people’s perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness will lead to the person’s attitude toward using technology. Qualitative case study was carried out to explore EFL teachers’ readiness to use technology in teaching. The data from interview analyzed using thematic analysis. To enrich the data, observation also employed. In this case, teachers’ attitude towards using is almost in the same height and generally low. However, their perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness result are varying. Based on the findings in my study, I found that the teachers feel that technology for learning is very useful for them. However, they feel it is not easy to use and also somewhat those teachers were resistant to accept the existence of technology in teaching. These shows that that the teachers in the school are not ready yet to use technology in teaching English.

Abstract

This current quasi experimental research tried to investigate the main effect of PANORAMA reading strategy which consists of Previewing, Annotating, Noting Vocabulary, Organizing, Reading aloud, Assessing, Monitoring, Answering, compared to the combined translation and reading aloud (TRA) toward students’ reading comprehension. After the process of treatment, the results of the two groups were compared and analyzed statistically. It was revealed that the difference between the control and the experimental groups was not significant. Despite the insignificant difference, PANORAMA is potential to be considered as an alternative of reading strategy to help students to comprehend English reading passage.

Abstract

The process of learning English as a foreign language is not easy as students face various difficulties and one of them is anxiety. Ketsman, (2012) and Yilmaz, (2011) stated that student's performance and achievement are affected by the teacher's effectiveness, and one of the teacher's roles is to reduce anxiety in the classroom by creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere in the classroom. For this purpose, it is important to know the level of anxiety of foreign language learners. The present study aimed to investigate the students' perceived level of foreign language anxiety among Indonesian high school students based on the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) by Horwitz et al. The present study was a survey design. This design focuses on describing trends in a large group of individuals (Creswell, 2012). The results of the present study showed that anxious students were quite common in foreign language classrooms within the scope of this study. The participants in the present study had a moderate-level of anxiety, and the three factors included in the research instrument contributed to it to varying degrees.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out how the value of peace was represented and also what was the most dominant value of peace in the Junior High School English textbook entitled "Think Globally Act Locally". The researcher used Balasooriya's (2001) theory regarding the values of peace which were mentioned as inner peace, social peace, and peace with nature. Furthermore, this research used Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a research design that focused on the visual semiotics of peace values. The research was conducted using Barthes' (1977) visual semiotics theory which used two layers of meaning, namely denotative and connotative, in analyzing visual objects. The findings showed that there were 13 images representing 3 groups of peace values, 2 of which contained 2 different peace values. Among them, the first 5 images were inner peace, the second 8 images were social peace and then followed by 2 images of peace in nature. This showed that the value of social peace was more dominant compared to other peace values.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the perceptions of ninth-grade students in a junior high school in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, regarding the implementation of online English learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Involving 50 students selected through a lottery method, this research focuses on five aspects: technical issues, motivation, time management, social interaction, and teachers’ support and access. The findings indicate that students faced challenges related to technical issues, such as poor internet connectivity and audio/video problems, which disrupted the learning process. Motivation and engagement varied among students, influenced by the absence of face-to-face interaction and distractions in the home environment. Time management was also a concern, with some students struggling to meet the demands of flexible online learning schedules. Limited social interaction and isolation were common experiences, affecting students’ sense of connection and engagement. The lack of access and support from teachers further impacted students’ perceptions of online learning. To sum up, this study underscores the importance of addressing technical challenges, enhancing motivation and engagement, improving time management skills, and fostering social interaction in online English learning. Therefore, further study is suggested to understand the long-term effects of online learning is crucial for identifying gaps and developing targeted interventions. Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate what and how moral values portrayed in a non-governmental EFL textbook for junior high school students for grade 8. The present study applied critical discourse analysis (CDA), framed in Fairclough’s three dimensional approaches to analyze visual, textual, and multimodal texts materials that represent the moral values in the textbook. The findings showed that Religiosity has the most frequently moral values found in the textbook, which is represented 36 times through different images, texts, and multimodal texts. Followed by the frequency of Nationalism and Helping each other took in a second place that represented moral values in the textbook, whereas the values of Integrity and Independence has the least frequently found in the textbook. Despite the potential imbalance in quantity, it can be inferred that this English textbook remains suitable for teaching the character education values to the students, since the textbook contains all five core moral values that recommended by the Indonesian government under the PPK program.
