Abstract

Abstract This study examines the phenomenon of the appearance of the One Piece flag alongside the Indonesian Red and White flag in an editorial poster published by Media Indonesia as a representation of a shift in how Indonesia’s younger generation understands national identity and democratic imagination. Employing Ferdinand de Saussure’s structural semiotics to dissect the system of signs, and Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework to uncover layers of myth and ideology, the study analyzes how global popular culture negotiates with local national symbols within the visual space of mass media. The method used is qualitative semiotic analysis with a descriptive–interpretive approach, treating the poster as a visual text. The findings indicate that the combination of the two flags produces a new sign system that reflects the hybridity of youth identity, in which democratic values are no longer imagined solely through conventional narratives of nationalism, but through the appropriation of popular culture symbols perceived to resonate with contemporary political aspirations. At the denotative level, the two flags function as signifiers carrying different signifieds national sovereignty versus individual freedom. However, at the connotative and mythological levels, this juxtaposition deconstructs the myth of a pure national identity and opens up space for a more inclusive and transnational democratic imagination. This study contributes to an understanding of how the political subjectivity of the digital generation is formed through negotiations between the local and the global, and how mass media plays a role in producing discourse on national identity in the transnational era. Keywords: semiotics, One Piece, national identity, popular culture, democratic imagination.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meanings, functions, and symbolism of traditional utterances in the Tamia Tapuni customary wedding ceremony of the Pulau Pura (Retta) community, Alor Regency. Traditional marriage is not merely understood as the union of two individuals, but also as a social and cultural event that embodies local values, beliefs, and cultural identity. This research focuses on the traditional utterances spoken during each stage of the wedding ceremony and the accompanying symbols, including ritual objects, ceremonial actions, and procedural structures. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method and adopts an ethnographic type of study. Data were collected through observation, interviews with traditional leaders and community members, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The theoretical framework includes Speech Act Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, Koentjaraningrat’s cultural theory, and Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory. The findings reveal that traditional utterances in the Tamia Tapuni wedding ceremony contain symbolic, social, and religious meanings and function as a medium for strengthening family relations, legitimizing customary practices, and conveying moral values. The symbols used in the ceremony reflect harmony, respect for ancestors, and the social structure of the Pulau Pura community. This study is expected to contribute to the fields of linguistic anthropology and semiotics and to support the preservation of local cultural traditions amid modernization.

Abstract

This study aims to describe conversational implicature as a representation of implied meaning in the novel Lara Ati by Bayu Skak through a pragmatic perspective based on Grice’s theory. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data sources derived from dialogues between characters in the novel. Data were collected through documentation, intensive reading, and systematic note-taking of utterances containing implicatures. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, coding, classification, and contextual interpretation using Grice’s cooperative principle and conversational maxims. The findings reveal three main types of implicature: conventional implicature, generalized conversational implicature, and particularized conversational implicature. Conventional implicatures appear through lexical and structural elements with stable semantic meanings, while generalized conversational implicatures emerge through common pragmatic inference that does not require highly specific contexts. Particularized conversational implicatures are the most dominant and complex forms, as they rely heavily on situational context, interpersonal relationships, and indirect communication patterns rooted in cultural norms. The study also shows that violations of relevance and quantity maxims function as strategic pragmatic devices used by characters to convey indirect refusals, satire, humor, nostalgia, and implicit emotional expressions. These findings indicate that implicature in the novel functions not only as a linguistic phenomenon but also as a narrative strategy that reflects social values, cultural communication patterns, and character development. This research contributes to the development of Indonesian literary pragmatics and broadens the understanding of implied meaning in contemporary fictional discourse.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to examine speech acts in the narrative dialogues of the novel Warisan Dua Dunia based on the pragmatic perspectives of speech act theories proposed by Austin and Searle. The focus of the research includes the realization of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, the classification of illocutionary speech acts, and the functions of speech acts within the context of inter-character interactions and plot development. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data consisting of utterances or dialogues between characters found in the novel Warisan Dua Dunia. Data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques. Data analysis was conducted by identifying speech acts based on Austin’s theory and classifying illocutionary speech acts according to Searle’s framework, followed by an analysis of the functions of utterances in narrative and interactional contexts. The findings indicate that all types of speech acts proposed by Austin, locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, are clearly realized in the dialogues of the novel. Based on Searle’s classification, five types of illocutionary speech acts were identified, namely directive, assertive, expressive, commissive, and declarative acts, with directive and assertive acts being the most dominant. This dominance suggests that the dialogues primarily function as a means of directing characters’ actions and conveying information to clarify narrative situations. Furthermore, speech acts play significant roles as drivers of character activities, builders of social relationships, conveyors of cultural values and traditions, triggers of conflict, and regulators of interaction that contribute to the progression of the storyline. Therefore, the narrative dialogues in Warisan Dua Dunia do not merely serve as communicative tools but function as linguistic actions that actively shape the narrative structure and interactional dynamics among characters. The pragmatic speech act theories of Austin and Searle are proven to be relevant and effective for conducting contextual and in-depth analyses of literary dialogue.

Abstract

The similarity and similarity of language in the Bima Sumba Group languages shows that there is a kinship relationship. This kinship relationship proves the divergence process. This process shows the durability, dissemination and inheritance of language that occurs naturally in the people of this group. This shows that there is retention and innovation in these languages. In all the languages in this group, the same lexicon is found, meaning that inheritance is constant or retention and similar ones experience innovation. These similarities and similarities are not due to borrowing or coincidence. These similarities and similarities occur due to genetic factors or direct inheritance. Therefore, it can be said that through related languages, it can be said that humans are also related, only at different separation times.

Abstract

Maintaining a regional language (Kodi) occurs when the language is used by the community of speakers and their supporters. This regional language continues to be used and preserved because of the process of survival, spread and inheritance. This language survives if it continues to be used by every family member, especially parents who share the same mother tongue, namely Kodi. After that, this language spread by its speakers who always moved to the same environment using the regional language. And this language continues to be passed on to children and grandchildren. This inheritance ensures that this regional language remains sustainable
