Abstract

The research aims at exploring the relationship between speaking anxiety and motivation among vocational high school students in EFL learning in Bintan Islands. In conducting this research, the method used is descriptive analysis. There are 60 samples taken from four vocational high schools with 15 samples from each school. Those are SMKN 1 Bintan Utara, SMKN 1 Seri Kuala Lobam, SMK Perkapalan, and SMK Muhammadiyah. The data collected were in the form of questionnaire and interview. The results of this research found that there are some factors that influence students’ EFL learning process such as anxiety about mispronouncing, making mistakes, and regarding teacher interruption for mistake correction, the lack of vocabulary, and the less attractive and interactive teaching style in the classroom. Those factors cause the low motivational issue in speaking English matters.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of students who experience anxiety in speaking English in the presentation class and to analyze the external factors that cause students' speaking anxiety in the presentation class at SMA Negeri 51 Jakarta class XI IPS 4. This study used a thematic qualitative descriptive analysis. by using the theory of Rogers (2008) in analyzing the characteristics of anxiety and Tanveer (2007) in analyzing the external factors that cause anxiety. The first data was obtained from the results of observations which were carried out once by documenting class presentation activities then the researcher analyzed them, and the second data was obtained through interviews conducted online using WhatsApp chat which were conducted outside school hours. In the first data, the researcher found that there were characteristics of anxiety in class XI IPS 4 students which could be seen from three aspects, namely physical aspects, emotional aspects, and psychological aspects. Meanwhile, the second data found that external factors causing students' speaking anxiety in class XI IPS 4 in the presentation class were caused by two components, namely the audience component and the material component.

Abstract

Language style serves as a supplementary instrument for individuals to partake in dialogue, drawing upon their speaking proficiency to align with the context and subject matter of the discourse. Using Martin Joss’s theory (1967), this research aims to find out the characteristics of formal language style that occur in the utterances in the American President movie. Descriptive qualitative method was used as the research design to analyze the characteristics of formal language style in the American President movie. The results of this research found 195 data which are presented in three points. The respectful tone (11), polite tone (21), avoid contraction of level grammar (22), avoid run-on sentence of level grammar (7), efficient words of level grammar (8), complete sentence of level grammar (113), and formal modal of level grammar (13). This means that the complete sentence of level grammar is prominently proved to be used in communication withing formal language style used in American President movie. based in the result of the research, it is fruitful to suggest the students of English Department to do further analysis about the five language styles used in other resources like movies, novels, or article that contain about the politics.

Abstract

The majority of this research was verbal anger which occurred most frequently. It can be seen in the main character more often using high tones and speaking harshly in speaking. This proves that anger that comes from feeling threatened tends to trigger angry emotions. This is followed by another finding which amounted to the second most in this finding is the uncontrol type of anger impulsivity. The third is the externalization type of anger locus. Then the reflection type of anger direction, and the punitive of anger objective. This research aims to discover the types of anger and analyze the causes of anger represented in the dialogue of the main character in the TV series The Watcher. This research used a qualitative descriptive method, to classify, and analyze data. The data of this research were the dialogue representation of anger in The Watcher series. The representation of anger in the dialogue with the main character was analyzed using Fernandez's six dimensions.

Abstract

Teaching for young learners is more challenging since the characteristics of young learners are quite different from adults. Younger learners are growing up by technology and it has been integrated with their lives. They feel comfortable and confident on using it. The purpose of this study is to examine the teachers’ perception on learning English through technology and to identify the challenges. This study used qualitative descriptive research to perceive the use of technology in teaching young learner including the challenges and to obtain more conclusions, the researcher made an depth interview with a teacher in one of primary school. The results of the research showed that the teachers are mostly agreeing to teach English for young learners by using technology, including digital picture, games, and songs. For the challenges, the teachers faced the lack of students’ concentration and difficulties in saying some words because of mother tongue. This is happened because the students are lack of exposure to English outside classroom. To overcome these challenges, the teacher should be creative making a pleasant classroom atmosphere, actively engaging students to speak English in the classroom and do self-reflection.

Abstract

The Environmental Observation Strategy is the approach that separating students into groups and having them observe a specific topic for 10-15 minutes before putting to their ideas. Afterward, groups merge their thoughts to create a descriptive paragraph. This research study aims to investigate the significant effectiveness of utilizing the Environmental Observation strategy in enhancing the writing skills of seventh-grade students in the descriptive text at SMPN 10 Pontianak. Employing a pre-experimental research design with a one-group pre-test and post-test approach, the study selected a sample of 32 students through cluster sampling as the sampling technique. Data collection involved administering pre-tests and post-tests in descriptive writing assessments. Statistical analysis comprised t-tests and effect size calculations. The results unequivocally demonstrate the significant impact of the Environmental Observation Strategy on students' descriptive writing skills. The t-test analysis (8.244) surpassed the critical value (2.0395) with df = 31, indicating a strong effect (effect size = 1.428). These findings underscore the pivotal role of implementing the Environmental Observation Strategy to enhance descriptive writing skills, thereby warranting its recommendation for seventh-grade students. By providing students with opportunities to observe and engage with their environment, educators can foster a deeper understanding of descriptive language and encourage students to effectively communicate their observations and experiences through writing.

Abstract

This research explores the correlation between emotional intelligence and students’ achievements in learning English. A correlation study was conducted on 34 students in Grade X of Pesantren Al-Amin Mompang Padang Lawas in the year 2023. Data were collected through a questionnaire and documentation of students’ English achievement. Spearman Level Correlation calculated the correlation coefficient (ρ) to determine the relationship between the two variables. It was concluded that there was a positive correlation (ρ = 0.78) between emotional intelligence and students’ achievement in learning English, indicating that emotional intelligence has a high influence on the achievement of students in learning English. The result of t-test (t-test = 0.78 > 0.52) accepted the hypothesis, which states there is a significant correlation between emotional intelligence and students’ learning achievement in English.

Abstract

This systematic literature review investigated the potential of online games to enhance English language learning among Indonesian high school students in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context. The review focused on research articles published between 2018 and 2023 that employed qualitative, quantitative, and experimental methodologies. From an initial pool of 103 articles, 18 were ultimately selected for analysis. The research explored four key areas: (1) the pedagogical implications of integrating online games into English language teaching, (2) the types of mobile game applications most suitable for this purpose, (3) the impact of online games on students’ English language proficiency, and (4) the potential challenges associated with using online games in the classroom. The review revealed that online games can foster students' motivation, vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, writing skills, and grammatical understanding. However, the research also highlights the importance of teachers developing effective strategies for integrating online games into their curriculum to maximize their learning potential.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the cultural categories and dimension inculded in Kurikulum Merdeka English textbook ‘Work in Progress’ issued by the Ministry of Education for Senior High School grade ten. The reseacher focus on analyzing the content in form of pictures. Thre are 79 pictres being analized from 6 chapters in total. The cultural categories theory by Chao (2011) and cultural dimension theory by Moran (2001) used to analyzed the cultural content on the book. From the 79 pictures being analyzed, there was 53% included in Universality across Culture (UC), 36% Source Culture (SC), 6% International Culture (IC), 5% intercultural Interaction (ICI), and 0% Target Culture (TC). Meanwhile, for the cultural dimension, 47% were in ‘product dimension, 23% in ‘person’ dimension, 21% in ‘practice’ dimension, 6% in ‘perspective’ dimension, and 3% in ‘community’ dimension. The researcher conclude that the English Tetxbook ‘Work in Progress’ for Senior High School grade ten need more consideration to the cultural content because it does not have a balance portion of cultural categories and dimension that can affect cultural bias and awarness into students perseption. The study underscores the need for greater attention to cultural content within the "Work in Progress" English textbook.

Abstract

This paper attempts to determine the account of the irresistible lexical items used in online media, examine the pedagogical strategies that impacted the cycle of the psychological expressions, and generalize the media's applications attracted to the learners' intentions through the features of irresistible lexical items. The researchers used qualitative descriptive with several techniques, including collecting data from Urdu speakers (participants) who used the irresistible lexical items in language teaching. And then, after reading newspapers, magazines, gadgets, books, journals, etc., the researchers generalized the ideas and concepts of the learners. The account of the irresistible lexical items' pedagogical relevance in online media could improve the Urdu speakers and affect the pedagogical levels, particularly in speaking. The pedagogical structure shapes the teachers' actions, judgments, and other teaching strategies and considers the learners' needs, backgrounds, and understanding. In addition, Language teaching adopts the linguistic framework of the lexical items and affects the medium of communication. Even similar words may be present in its language, affecting the pedagogical structure of language teaching.
