Abstract

This study investigates the aggressive digital marketing strategies utilized by contemporary cosmetic brands to capture evolving consumer demographics. Specifically, the research aims to examine the mechanisms of influencer branding deployed by Glad2Glow on digital platforms and analyze these promotional methods through the conceptual lens of Sharia Marketing to establish ethical-legal boundaries for modern digital commerce. Methodologically, this study adopts a normative juridical research design integrated with conceptual and phenomenological approaches. Data collection was systematically conducted through an extensive literature review, analysis of formal Islamic jurisprudence materials, and structural social media monitoring on TikTok, focusing on both primary and secondary qualitative legal-ethical sources. The empirical findings reveal that Glad2Glow’s partnership with prominent beauty influencers successfully cultivates deep consumer trust and strong emotional attachments through a distinct combination of radical honesty and multi-day user-progress storytelling. From a Sharia Marketing viewpoint, this branding framework satisfies the core pillars of Akhlaqiyyah (ethics) and Al-Waqi’iyyah (realism) by effectively mitigating informational asymmetry (tadlis) and commercial overclaiming (gharar). However, critical vulnerabilities emerge regarding the Al-Insaniyyah (humanism) and Rabbaniyyah (theism) dimensions, where risks of physical skin irritation (dharar) and age-inappropriate consumer targeting persist due to the highly persuasive nature of viral endorsements. In conclusion, while the strategy successfully drives mass sales conversion, balanced demographic filtering and transparent risk education remain mandatory under Islamic economic frameworks.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the differences in the regulation of the legal status of non-Muslim heirs in Islamic inheritance law across various Muslim countries, which continue to leave unresolved issues of justice within pluralistic societies. The main issue lies in the provisions of classical Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), which regard differences in religion as an impediment to inheritance. However, in contemporary practice, various alternative mechanisms, such as wasiat wajibah (mandatory bequest), have emerged to address the need for justice in interfaith families. This study aims to analyze the legal status of non-Muslim heirs in Islamic inheritance law in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Egypt from the perspectives of maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah and justice. The method employed is normative legal research using a comparative legal approach and a conceptual approach based on maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah. The results of the study indicate that Indonesia accommodates non-Muslim heirs through the jurisprudence of wasiat wajibah, Malaysia maintains a conservative approach by rejecting interfaith inheritance and relying on hibah (inter vivos gifts), while Egypt has institutionalized wasiat wajibah through formal regulations. These differences reflect a shift from formal justice toward substantive justice in contemporary Islamic inheritance law.

Abstract

This study analyzes creed theory as the philosophical foundation for implementing Islamic law in Indonesian family law and examines the limits of legal tolerance toward interfaith marriage. The issue arises from tension between Article 2(1) of Law Number 1 of 1974 on Marriage and the Compilation of Islamic Law, which prohibit interfaith marriage, and the continuing practice of such marriages through various legal channels, including district court determinations. Using a normative legal method with legislative, conceptual, and historical approaches, this research employs qualitative interpretive analysis of relevant legal materials. The findings indicate that creed theory remains relevant as an epistemological framework linking Islamic theological principles with Indonesia’s positive legal system. Its influence is reflected in Article 8(f) of the Marriage Law, Articles 40(c) and 44 of the Compilation of Islamic Law, and reinforced by Constitutional Court Decisions Number 68/PUU-XII/2014 and Number 24/PUU-XX/2022. The study also finds that, prior to Supreme Court Circular Letter Number 2 of 2023, inconsistencies emerged among district courts due to the absence of clear and uniform legal norms. As a result, some judges approved applications related to interfaith marriage registration. The Circular Letter seeks to reduce these disparities by reaffirming restrictions on interfaith marriage and narrowing interpretive differences among judges. However, its nonbinding character leaves unresolved questions concerning harmonization with the Population Administration Law and legal certainty. The study concludes that Indonesia's legal tolerance recognizes religious diversity but not marriages conflicting with religious law. It therefore recommends strengthening regulations, improving judicial capacity, and enhancing education nationwide.

Abstract

The childfree phenomenon, as a conscious decision not to have children, is becoming increasingly prominent in modern society and sparking debate, particularly when linked to family values and religious perspectives. This study aims to analyze the childfree phenomenon through the framework of Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas's Islamization of knowledge, by tracing the elements of the secular worldview that underpin key concepts such as freedom, humanity, nature, and marriage. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach, as well as a conceptual analysis of Al-Attas's thinking and contemporary childfree discourse. The research findings indicate that (1) the childfree phenomenon is not neutral, but rather rooted in a modern, secular worldview that separates freedom from moral and transcendent dimensions and views the relationship between humans and nature instrumentally. (2) From Al-Attas's perspective on Islamization, the main problem with being childfree lies in conceptual errors resulting from the loss of adab, not solely in individual choice. (3) Therefore, Islamization is directed toward restoring the meaning of key concepts based on monotheism, human nature, and etiquette, so that freedom, marriage, and human relations with nature are understood anew within the framework of responsibility and the purpose of human creation as servants and vicegerents.

Abstract

The development of social media has brought significant changes in the practice of Islamic da'wah, particularly through the Instagram platform, which allows the dissemination of religious messages in a visual, interactive, and easily accessible manner to the younger generation. This study aims to analyze the representation of millennial da'wah preachers in da'wah content on the Instagram account @husein_ja'far. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis method focusing on denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. Stuart Hall's representation theory is used to understand the process of meaning formation in digital da'wah content. The research data were obtained from several Instagram posts by Habib Husein Ja'far featuring themes of religious tolerance, spirituality, the unity of Muslims, and religious freedom. The results show that the representation of millennial da'wah preachers is built through communicative characteristics, adaptability to technological developments, closeness to the younger generation, and the ability to package religious messages through humor, dialogue, and creative content. At the denotative level, the content displays daily activities and cross-community collaboration. At the connotative level, the visuals and narratives used contain messages of religious moderation, inclusivity, and the importance of humanitarian values. Meanwhile, at the mythical level, the content constructs the ideology that Islam is a tolerant, peaceful religion, and relevant to life in a digital society. This study concludes that the Instagram account @husein_ja'far represents a millennial preacher who is humanistic, moderate, and able to utilize digital media as an effective means of preaching. This representation demonstrates the transformation of preaching from a conventional model to a more participatory, contextual digital preaching model that aligns with the characteristics of modern society.

Abstract

Substitute inheritance is a form of reform in Islamic inheritance law in Indonesia that aims to provide protection to grandchildren whose parents predecease the testator. However, its provisions continue to generate debate regarding the limits of protection that can be provided to ensure fairness in inheritance distribution. This study aims, first, to compare the provisions for substitute inheritance in Article 185 of the Compilation of Islamic Law with the tanzil mechanism in the Algerian Code de la Famille. Second, analyze the relevance of the limitation of rights in the tanzil mechanism as a normative perspective to strengthen the implementation of distributive justice in the regulation of substitute inheritance in Indonesia. This study is a normative legal study with a statutory, conceptual, and comparative legal approach. Primary, secondary, and tertiary legal materials were analyzed qualitatively using prescriptive methods. The results show that both systems provide protection to grandchildren, but through different legal constructions. Substitute inheritance in Indonesia places grandchildren as substitutes for their parents, while tanzīl in Algeria, rights are granted to grandchildren through a special mechanism that includes restrictions in the form of a maximum share limit and takes into account gifts, bequests, or other gifts received from the testator during his lifetime. This comparison shows that the tanzil arrangement provides a more comprehensive limitation mechanism in realizing proportional inheritance distribution. This research contributes by offering normative developments for the regulation of substitute inheritance in Indonesia through the adoption of the principle of proportionality in the tanzil mechanism without changing the basic character of the Islamic inheritance system in Indonesia.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology and globalization has exposed iGeneration students to increasingly complex moral challenges, highlighting the need for effective character education grounded in Islamic values. Although previous studies have discussed ‘iffah primarily from theological and conceptual perspectives, limited empirical evidence explains how this value is internalized through educational practices to foster Islamic character among students in the digital era. This study aims to examine the process of ‘iffah value internalization, identify the supporting and inhibiting factors, and analyse its implications for developing Islamic character among iGeneration students at SMK Islam Bustanul Hikmah Kembangbahu Lamongan. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and analysed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that ‘iffah value internalization occurs through three interconnected stages: value transformation, value transaction, and transinternalization. The process is strengthened by school policies, teachers’ role modelling, and a religious school environment, while social media influence, peer interactions, and family background remain significant challenges. The internalization of ‘iffah values contributes to strengthening students’ self-control, preserving personal dignity, and fostering Islamic character in both offline and digital contexts. The novelty of this study lies in providing empirical evidence of how school-based character education internalizes ‘iffah values among iGeneration students in the digital era, thereby enriching the discourse on Islamic character education through a contextual and practice-oriented perspective.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between Western colonial museology and the coloniality of knowledge in the Malay World, with particular attention to natural history museums, colonial anthropology, and British scientific imperialism. The study adopts a qualitative approach grounded in historical textual analysis and critical historiography of historiographical sources, colonial documents, critical museology scholarship, and the history of colonial science. The findings show that the development of modern museums was closely intertwined with Western imperialism, the production of scientific knowledge, and the construction of colonial epistemic authority over local societies and tropical environments. In the Malay Peninsula, institutions such as the Perak Museum developed as part of British administrative science that facilitated the collection of local flora, fauna, minerals, and ethnographic data in the interests of colonial economic and administrative concerns. The study further shows that modern scientific institutions such as FRIM and IMR emerged from the broader structure of colonial scientific imperialism. At the same time, the article argues that epistemic coloniality continues to persist within post-colonial museum institutions through the continuity of Western classificatory systems and curatorial approaches. Nevertheless, the emergence of Malay-Islamic museology in Malaysia reflects ongoing efforts to reconstruct local epistemologies by incorporating Jawi manuscripts, Malay-Islamic civilization, intellectual traditions, and the Islamic worldview into contemporary museum narratives.

Abstract

Existing scholarship has documented police bias during episodes of anti-Muslim communal violence in India, despite there is a limited explanation for why similar patterns of police conduct recur across different political administrations and geographies. Thus, this study examines how sections of Indian police become complicit in communal violence through active participation or strategic neutrality. This study uses a qualitative comparative analysis of the 2002 Gujarat pogrom, the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, and the 2020 Northeast Delhi communal violence to identify recurring patterns of delayed police intervention, selective enforcement, partisan investigations, and post-violence impunity. Adopting the theoretical framework of Paul Brass’s institutionalised riot system, Veena Das’s concept of illegible state, Michel Foucault’s concept of governmentality, and Deana Heath’s genealogy of colonial policing, the study develops the concept of structural omission to explain why these patterns persist across different political and historical contexts. The study contributes to scholarship on communal violence, policing, and state accountability by relocating the explanation for police complicity from individual misconduct to institutional architecture.

Abstract

Pesantren are challenged to preserve their Islamic identity while responding to modernity, scientific development, and technological transformation. This study analyzes the construction of Islamic education orientation, curriculum integration, students' moral values, and its development in Tebuireng Magazine from 2015 to 2025. Using a qualitative literature study and Teun A. van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis, the study examines twelve articles from the Main Presentation column through the dimensions of text structure, social cognition, and social context. The findings show that Tebuireng Magazine constructs Islamic education as an integrative paradigm that combines pesantren traditions with modern demands through Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah, classical Islamic texts, scholarly sanad, science, technology, and leadership. Curriculum integration encompasses religious knowledge, science, technology, character education, leadership, and students' moral development. The discourse evolved through three phases: institutional identity consolidation (2015–2018), epistemic defense (2019–2021), and pedagogical-technocratic transformation (2024–2025). The study concludes that Tebuireng Magazine functions as an ideological medium that promotes integrative, adaptive, and transdisciplinary pesantren-based education and provides a reflective reference for contemporary pesantren curriculum development.
