Abstract

Education has been a fundamental concern and a top priority since the earliest stages of human life. In Islam, the importance of education is deeply rooted, as reflected in the prophetic tradition emphasizing lifelong learning from the womb to the grave. This study aims to compare the educational perspectives of two prominent Muslim scholars, Al-Ghazali and Zakiah Daradjat, particularly regarding the ideal characteristics of a teacher. The research seeks to identify similarities and differences in their views and evaluate their relevance as references for contemporary educators. This qualitative study employs historical and philosophical approaches, utilizing inductive-deductive, comparative, and descriptive methods of analysis. The findings reveal that both Al-Ghazali and Zakiah Daradjat have made significant intellectual contributions to the conceptualization of the teacher's role. While sharing many foundational principles, their perspectives also exhibit distinct differences shaped by their respective historical and cultural contexts. Operationally, their concepts remain applicable and offer valuable insights for modern educators, provided they are adapted to current pedagogical frameworks and enriched through contemporary educational strategies.

Abstract

This article discusses the need of moral education in fostering positive human traits in the face of societal etiquette crises.  Using literary analysis, the study shows that concepts like empathy, honesty, and responsibility can be effectively expressed through role models, habits, advice, and inspirational stories.  In addition to the effects on families and schools, improper use of technology can also have negative effects.  This article also discusses negative effects of digital media, hedonistic tendencies, and a lack of positive role model.  Education based on the Qur'an and the Sunnah is considered essential for raising morally upright generations, with cooperation between families, schools, and the general public as a key component of its success.

Abstract

Belief in and engagement with Siḥr (magic or sorcery) remains a persistent feature of religious life in many Muslim communities, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where Islamic orthodoxy often coexists with indigenous cosmologies. In Ilorin, Nigeria—a historically significant Islamic centre—practices associated with Siḥr continue to thrive despite the city’s deep-rooted Sunni heritage. This phenomenon poses a theological contradiction to classical reformist doctrines, notably those advanced by Shaykh Muḥammad Ibn ʿAbdil Wahhāb in Kitāb at-Tawḥīd, where Siḥr is categorically condemned as an act of Shirk (polytheism) and a nullifier of Tawḥīd (Islamic monotheism). The paper critically examines the discourse on Siḥr in Kitāb at-Tawḥīd and assesses its relevance to the beliefs and practices of Muslims in Ilorin. The research adopts a textual-analytical and expository method, rooted in classical Islamic scholarship, complemented by socio-anthropological interpretation based on informal field interviews and observed ritual patterns. It also integrates Cultural Schema Theory and Cognitive Anthropology to explain how theological doctrines are negotiated in local religious contexts. Findings reveal that various forms of Siḥr—such as love magic, separation rituals, economic charms, and protective amulets—are practised by Muslims across sectarian lines, including Sunni, Sufi, and Shia orientations. These practices are often justified through localised interpretations of spirituality, gender roles, and moral intention. The paper concludes that Siḥr in Ilorin reflects a pluralistic religious consciousness, where cultural resilience often challenges doctrinal rigidity. This research contributes to Islamic studies and religious anthropology by offering a contextual and interdisciplinary perspective on belief and ritual in contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the thematic-integrative paradigm in the development of curriculum and learning in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at madrasahs or schools through a literature review approach. This paradigm offers a solution to the challenge of fragmented learning by integrating Islamic values into cross-subject themes in a contextual and holistic manner. The literature study method is used to analyze theories, concepts, and previous research findings relevant to the integrative approach in Islamic education. The findings indicate that the thematic-integrative approach enhances the effectiveness of PAI learning, supports value internalization, and shapes students' character in spiritual, intellectual, and social dimensions. The successful implementation of this paradigm is strongly influenced by teacher competence, institutional support, and the availability of adaptive curriculum tools. Therefore, strengthening teacher training and providing systemic support are key to realizing a more transformative and relevant PAI learning experience for today’s educational needs.

Abstract

Islamic education in the Parepare Correctional Institution plays a crucial role in shaping the religious character of inmates. This study examines the implementation of religious education as a rehabilitation effort that focuses not only on cognitive aspects but also on moral and spiritual values. The methods used include interviews, observations, and documentation, with descriptive data analysis. The results indicate that religious activities, such as communal prayers and Quran recitations, successfully enhance the religious awareness of inmates. However, challenges such as staff competency and inmate boredom need to be addressed to achieve optimal outcomes. This study provides recommendations for developing more effective and innovative training programs to support the social reintegration of inmates.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare the concepts of Islamic education from the perspectives of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari and KH. Ahmad Dahlan. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature review. The collected data are analyzed descriptively. This study concludes that KH. Hasyim Asy'ari is known for his pesantren education model, which emphasizes the deepening of religious knowledge and character building, while KH. Ahmad Dahlan pioneered the integration of religious and general knowledge through the modern madrasah system. Pesantren and madrasah are two main educational models that complement each other in shaping a generation of Muslims who are knowledgeable, have good character, and are ready to face the challenges of the times. The integration of religious and general knowledge is the key to creating holistic Islamic education that is relevant to the needs of modern society. NU plays a role in preserving classical Islamic scholarly traditions through pesantren and madrasah diniyah, while Muhammadiyah develops modern education that adapts to the times without neglecting Islamic values. The educational concepts and practices proposed by these two figures have become important pillars in national development, making Islamic education in Indonesia adaptive, inclusive, and rooted in Islamic values. The contributions of NU and Muhammadiyah to contemporary Islamic education are highly significant in addressing the challenges of the times. By combining the strength of traditional scholarship with modern innovation, both organizations have created a holistic, adaptive model of Islamic education that is oriented toward Islamic values and 21st-century competencies. Their synergy must continue to be strengthened to shape a moderate, competitive Muslim generation ready to face the era of globalization.
