Abstract

This study aims to explore the population migration from Fafanlap to Yellu Island in South Misool District, Raja Ampat Regency, Southwest Papua Province. The research employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques, including observation, interviews, and documentation. This migration occurred around the 18th century during the reign of Sultan Nuku of Tidore. Driving factors for the migration included the less supportive environmental conditions in Fafanlap, such as the settlement pattern over water and crop damage by wild pigs. Additionally, the tax system imposed by the Tidore Sultanate added to the burden on the Fafanlap community. The main pull factor was the fertile and strategic natural conditions of Yellu Island, which was easier to monitor and manage. The research findings show that this migration significantly impacted various aspects of life in the Yellu community. In the social domain, there was an improvement in education and close interactions with neighbouring villages. Economically, the Yellu community experienced a diversification of livelihoods, including agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Yellu Island has become a tourist destination with homestays and other tourist facilities, helping to boost the local economy. Additionally, this migration strengthened the cultural identity of the Yellu community, preserving traditions and customs such as traditional rituals and communal work (mafabantuo). This study makes an essential contribution to understanding social dynamics and migration in the context of indigenous communities in Indonesia. The findings also offer valuable insights for further studies on population migration and resource management in remote areas.

Abstract

This study examines the history and development of ecological thinking in economics, known as the green economy. Starting with the classical concept of resource limitations by economists such as Thomas Malthus and John Stuart Mill, the research explores the evolution of thought emphasizing the balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability. The early 20th-century conservation movement and the 1972 report "The Limits to Growth" were pivotal milestones that underscored the urgency of sustainable development models. In the 21st century, the green economy concept has been increasingly adopted by various countries and international organizations, such as the European Union with the Green Deal and initiatives in developing countries supported by international institutions. This research employs a literature review method to collect and analyze academic sources, resulting in a comprehensive synthesis of the contributions and challenges of the green economy. The study concludes that integrating ecological principles into economic policies can offer holistic solutions to global environmental and economic issues, paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Abstract

Traditional agriculture is crucial in food security in remote areas such as Seram Island, Maluku Province, by providing primary food sources and preserving biodiversity and local wisdom. However, modernization and climate change threaten the sustainability of this system. This study explores traditional farming methods on Seram Island that can be integrated with modern technology to enhance food security. The findings indicate that local communities use mixed farming methods and organic fertilizers, which increase soil fertility productivity and reduce the risk of crop failure. These results align with studies highlighting the advantages of mixed farming systems and the effectiveness of organic fertilizers. Adapting modern technology, such as drought-resistant rice varieties and applying organic fertilizers on cassava and sweet potatoes, also proved to increase crop yields and productivity, supporting the literature on the benefits of climate-resistant crop varieties and organic fertilizers. This research contributes to the literature on the role of traditional agriculture in food security. It demonstrates that integrating modern technology with traditional practices can create a more productive and sustainable agricultural system. An approach that preserves local wisdom while adopting technological innovations could be an effective model for improving food security and farmer welfare in other regions facing similar challenges.

Abstract

The Baileo located in Negeri Ameth is called Baihata Kapalatu, and the village's original name (teon) is Samasuru Amalatu. Etymologically, Samasuru Amalatu means a village led by a latu (king) established due to a command. Research shows that there are three entrances to this Baileo, each related to the roles of three villages: Ameth, Nalahia, and Akoon. In the past, these three villages were part of Ina Huhu, with Ameth serving as Ina Huhu's head and Titawaai as Ina Haha's head. According to some traditional elders, the southern entrance is for the village of Akoon, the western entrance is for Ameth, and the northern entrance is for Nalahia. Before the construction of the Baileo in Negeri Ameth, all meetings concerning decision-making for issues related to Ameth were held in the old village in the mountains, where the community had yet to establish permanent residences. The people of Ameth believed they needed to move down to the coast and build a settlement. Using a tool called a lobe, which was thrown downwards, they decided where the lobe landed. A sacred stone was placed at this spot, and next to it, the Baileo of Negeri Ameth, named Baihata Kapalatu, was built. It is known that Baihata Kapalatu was originally the Baileo of Ina Huhu, belonging to Ameth as the king and Akoon and Nalahia as chiefs. Thus, all matters concerning these three villages were once handled within this Baileo. However, over time, the Baileo ceased to serve the towns of Akoon and Nalahia as they each built their own Baileo. Consequently, matters related to these two villages are no longer conducted in Baihata Kapalatu but are now handled within their respective Baileo. The Baileo in Negeri Ameth plays a vital role in conducting governmental ceremonies and traditional rituals within the village. The people of Ameth also believe that the Baileo is a sacred place that must be preserved and respected, as it is an integral part of the culture of the Maluku people, particularly the indigenous community of Negeri Ameth.

Abstract

This study examines the Hende Hora marriage tradition among the Buton community in Tomi-Tomi Hamlet, Waesala District, West Seram Regency. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. According to Bogdan and Taylor (in Moleong, 2005), qualitative methods produce descriptive data in the form of written or spoken words from people and observable behaviour. This research focuses on understanding social phenomena from various participants' perspectives. Data sources were obtained from traditional leaders, community leaders, religious figures, and documentation related to the Hende Hora marriage tradition. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and document analysis. The research findings indicate that the Hende Hora marriage is a solution for community members who wish to marry despite lacking sufficient wealth. The process includes traditional rituals such as kabubusikakeno (foot washing) and kapusuko (draping with cloth). Although performed, this marriage is still respected and holds value equal to other traditional marriages in Southeast Sulawesi. The religious and cultural values embedded in this tradition highlight the importance of customs in shaping personality and social relationships within the Buton community. This study confirms that the Hende Hora tradition is still maintained and recognized in Tomi-Tomi Hamlet.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the lives of political prisoners in Savana Jaya Village, Waeapo District, Buru Regency, and to reveal the social changes that have occurred in their lives. Through a descriptive qualitative approach, this research delves into the experiences and social dynamics of the political prisoners, most of whom were arrested, detained, and subjected to harsh treatment following the events of the September 30th Movement in 1965. Under military supervision, the political prisoners worked to clear forests and develop rice fields, transforming previously untouched wilderness into productive agricultural land. The interaction between the political prisoners and the indigenous population led to cultural and economic exchanges, introducing new farming techniques and improving local welfare. The research findings indicate significant economic, linguistic, and cultural changes, with intermarriage between groups leading to a blending of Javanese and Buru cultures. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of social changes on Buru Island and the contributions of the political prisoners in transforming the local socio-economic conditions.

Abstract

This research explores the decolonization of the mind from a historical perspective in the new era through a literature review method. Decolonizing the mind attempts to dismantle colonial legacies that still influence the postcolonial era's structure of knowledge, education, and social consciousness. By reviewing relevant academic literature, this research identifies how colonial discourses still dominate and how postcolonial theories attempt to challenge dominant Eurocentric narratives. The results show that despite the formal end of colonialism, many educational institutions and intellectual discourses still operate within a framework that marginalizes non-Western perspectives. This research also highlights the importance of epistemic inclusion and recognition of local knowledge as essential steps in decolonizing the mind. In addition, critiques of existing decolonization approaches are also discussed, particularly about the effectiveness of their implementation in creating real structural change. This research provides significant theoretical contributions and practical insights into how decolonization principles can be applied in various contexts to achieve sustainable transformation in the distribution of knowledge and power

Abstract

This research explores efforts to revive local traditions amid globalization, increasingly dominating various aspects of people's lives. Globalization often hurts preserving traditions, such as the marginalization of local cultural values by modernization and the homogenization of global culture. Through the literature research method, this study analyzes various scientific sources that discuss the relationship between globalization and tradition preservation, focusing on adaptation strategies that local communities can carry out. The results show that while globalization presents significant challenges, there are opportunities to preserve and adapt traditions through education, community engagement, and the judicious use of technology. This approach allows traditions to remain relevant and contribute positively to cultural identity in a modern context. The study concludes that tradition preservation is about maintaining old practices, innovation, and adaptation to ensure local cultural values survive and thrive in globalization. The findings provide a comprehensive view of how traditions can live and thrive amid changing times.
