Bali Dental Journal
The topics covered by the Bali Dental Journal include all fields of basic and clinical dentistry. Some manuscripts focusing on the study of certain endemic diseases such as dental caries and periodontal diseases in particular regions of any country as well as oral pre-cancers, oral cancers, and oral submucous fibrosis related to betel nut chewing habit are also considered for publication. Besides, the Bali Dental Journal also publishes articles about the efficacy of a new treatment modality on oral verrucous hyperplasia or early oral squamous cell carcinoma. In addition, we also publish the scientific researches evaluating the use of new biomaterials, new drugs and new methods for treatment of patients with different kinds of oral and maxillofacial diseases or defects, the diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial diseases with new methods, etc. Moreover, researches on the quality of life, psychological interventions, improving disease treatment outcomes, the prevention, diagnosis and management of cancer therapeutic complications, rehabilitation, palliative and end of life care, and support teamwork for cancer care and oral health care for old patients are also welcome, due to remarkable increase of elder patients above 60 years old in the north-east region of Asia. In short, the Bali Dental Journal publishes the scientific dental articles that bring new knowledge, new observations, new techniques, new diagnosis and treatment modalities, and new clinical trials to all the readers of this journal. The target audience of the Bali Dental Journal includes researchers, dental practitioners or clinicians, oral and dental policy-makers, dental educators, hard-tissue scientists, dental students, and other health professionals. The Bali Dental Journal accepts Perspectives, Review articles, Original articles, Case reports, Short communications, Research letters, Correspondence and Letters to the Editor.

Background: Edentulous is a condition when the tooth is apart from its socket, which can be caused by caries, periodontal disease, trauma, and systemic disease history. Aim: The purpose of this study is to know the prevalence of tooth loss and to know sociodemographic that affecting the loss of tooth on elderly in Penatahan village. Methods: The design of this study is cross-sectional analytic. Samples of this study are elderly in Penatahan village, Tabanan aged 45-74 years. The sampling technique of this study is using total sampling of 99 people were given a questionnaire.Results: Based on the result of the bivariate analysis there were 78 (78.8%) of people who have lost of the teeth. The incidence of tooth loss by the age of the respondents has a meaningful statistical test (<0.001) with prevalence ratio (PR) CI (Confidence Interval) 95% is 0,554 (0,407-0,752), based on the incidence of tooth loss with menopause status of the respondents has a meaningful statistical test (<0.001) with prevalence ratio (PR) CI (Confidence Interval) 95% is 2.450 (1.202-4.996). Based on the result of the multivariate analysis between the variables of age, menopause status, income and occupation, factor that affecting the loss of tooth is menopause status with OR (odds ratio) CI (confidence interval) 95% is 0.16 (0,02-0,94) with a value p = 0,043. Conclusions: The conclusion of this study is that the incidences of tooth loss related with the age and menopausal status, while occupation and income has not.

Background: Dental anxiety is a general response which will be experienced by a person prior to the act of dental care. Dental anxiety experienced by patients will bring negative effects to patients undergoing dental treatments. Patients who have dental anxiety tend to avoid dental visit regularly and requires more time in dental treatment. Aim: This study aims to know factors that influence anxiety of young adult dental patients before dental treatment at the society health center II West DenpasarMethods: Analytic cross sectional method and consecutive sampling technique were used in this study. Data were collected using a questionnaire namely Short Version of the Dental Anxiety Inventory (S-DAI) to find out the patient’s level of anxiety before undergoes dental treatment. The data was analyzed using Chi-Square test. Processing technique and data analysis was done with statistical test Chi Square. Results: Result showed that H0 was rejected (p<0,05). It is concluded that there was relationship between dental anxiety before dental treatment and gender, age, sosio-economic, and education. Conclusion: Based on the research results, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between the dental anxiety before dental treatment with gender, age, socio-economic, educational and health center II in West Denpasar.

Background: Caries is the main oral disease among Indonesian society. One of the main etiology of the dental caries is cariogenic food intake. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the caries incidence and cariogenic food intake pattern among elementary students aged 10 to 12 years old at Batur village, Gianyar, Bali. Methods: This study is a cross sectional descriptive study. The data was collected by filling Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQ) by 104 elementary students aged 10 to 12 years old to investigate the type and intake pattern of cariogenic food. Results: The result shows that the average of def-t index (decayed, extracted, filled tooth) among respondents was 1,8 (low category), and the average of DMF-T index (Decayed, Missing, Filled Tooth) was 2,78 (moderate category). The highest cariogenic food was candy which was consumed more than 3 times a day and 5 to 6 times a week. Conclusions: The conclusion of the study is that the caries incidence and the cariogenic contained food intake rate are cariogenic contained food intake among elementary student at Batur village, Gianyar, Bali.

Background: Dental caries is a multifactorial disease in hard tissue that can occur when there are factors interrelated to one another. Untreated dental caries will reach the pulp and cause pulp inflammation or pulpitis. Factors that cause pulpitis are internal factors and external factors. Aim: The purpose of this study is to know the prevalence of pulpitis in the region of Dawan I primary health center.Methods: Descriptive study used with cross sectional study approach was used in this study. Sample of 107 people was obtained by simple random sampling. Results: The result showed that prevalence of pulpitis in the region of Dawan I primary health center is high (25.2%). Meanwhile, the prevalence of respondents who have bad habit amounted to 66.7%. Respondents who have bad healthy behavior amounted 85.2%. Association between pulpitis and habit are significant in statistics (p=<0.001). The prevalence of pulpitis more occur in bad nutrition intake amounted 100%. Association between pulpitis and nutrition are significant in statistics (p=<0.001). Conclusions: It is concluded that the prevalence of pulpitis in the region of Dawan I primary health center is high. Community in the region of Dawan I primary health center which mostly pulpitis have a bad habit, bad healthy behavior and bad nutrition intake. Primary health center is expected to provide information by using media such as film, slide or print media to change habits, behavior and nutrition community.

Background: Tooth extraction is a procedure of pulling out the teeth from the alveolar bone socket. Tooth extraction is a last choice of treatment for the patients that have damaged tooth and cannot be treated anymore. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of society knowledge about oral health for the tooth extraction treatment in Puskesmas Mengwi II. Methods: A descriptive study with cross sectional approach was done from October 24 to November 30, 2016 at Puskesmas Mengwi II. Data were collected by means of questionnaires. Total sample of 76 respondents were patients aged 18 years and older who performed dental and oral treatment at Puskesmas Mengwi II. Statistical analysis of univariate and bivariate (chi square test) are used to determine the relationship between 2 variables.Results: The results of this study are 16 (21.1%) respondents performed tooth extractions and 60 (78.9%) respondents did not perform tooth extractions. There are 52 (68.4%) respondents with high level of oral health knowledge and 24 (31.6%) respondents with low level of oral health knowledge. Chi square test analysis showed the value of p = 0.019. Conclusions: It was concluded that respondents with low level of oral health knowledge have a higher proportion of tooth extraction compared with high level of oral health knowledge and it is statistically significant.

Background: Anxiety about dental procedures is a natural thing experienced by every individual. The development of anxiety about dental procedures occur between ages of 18 and 26 years old, which has considered as a college student. Medical student is already equipped with knowledge about oral health science, both basic science or more specific one. With enough knowledge, it is expected that medical students do not feel anxious when performing dental treatment. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe the level of anxiety about dental procedures to students in Medical Faculty, Udayana University. Method: This study is a quantitative descriptive study with cross-sectional approach. The 107 samples was obtained using simple random sampling. Data were collected by using The Corah Dental Anxiety Scale (CDAS) questionnaire to determine the level of knowledge, the level of anxiety and dental procedures that the student most-worried about. Results: The results showed that the student with high level of knowledge (80%) are likely to experience mild to moderate anxiety. Whereas student with low level of knowledge (20%) tend to experience up to severe anxiety. Women tend to be more anxious than men. Conclusion: Conclusions from this research is most student in Medical Faculty, Udayana University tend to feel anxious when performing dental treatments.

Background: Early routine check up to dentist was one of the caries preventive measures, however there are still many people ignore about dental health and mouth because they feel anxious or fear of it. Method: This research is an analytic research by doing cross sectional approach. The respondent in this research are 95 children among 7-11 years at SD Negeri 27 Pemecutan in West Denpasar in 2016/2017 period. The samples was taken by using the stratified random sampling technique with the questioner entitled Children’s Fear Survey Schedule-Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS) as the measuring instrument which were already translated into Bahasa Indonesia and caries index to count the number of caries. Results: The result of this research shows that the respondent who had anxiety has DMF-T index with the higher median which is 2 with the interquartile range at 3 than other respondent who had no anxiety which is 0 with the interquartile range at 3 and that means statistically (p= 0.022). The respondent who had anxiety has def-t index with the higher median which is 5 with the interquartile range at 5 than the respondent who had no anxiety which the median is 2 with the interquartile range at 5 and that means statistically (p=0.001). Conclusion: Based on the result of this research, the writer can conclude that there is a relation which is significant with the children dental anxiety among 7-11 years with the caries index at SD Negeri 27 Pemecutan in West Denpasar.

Background: The use of fixed orthodontic appliance without knowledge and appropriate action during treatment will cause problems in the mouth and teeth. Parts of fixed orthodontic appliances can cause food debris attach to the teeth and make cleaning or brushing the teeth difficult. Thus potentially create a new environment for bacteria and cause caries. Aim: The aim of this study is to know the caries status of non dentistry student using fixed orthodontics appliance at Udayana University. Method: This is a descriptive study with cross sectional design. Sample was determined using purpose sampling technique accordance to the inclusion criteria. Data was obtained by using an index of Decay Missing Filling Teeth (DMF-T). Results: The results of the study showed 57 respondents were exposed to caries (77%) and 17 respondents were free of caries (23%). Status of caries showed the number of DMF-T in average 3,6 and is included as intermediate level (based on the category of index of DMF-T WHO). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the caries status of non dentistry student using fixed orthodontic appliance at Udayana University was in intermediate level.

Introduction: Adolescents in the aged of 10 to 24 years in Denpasar ranked highest in orthodontic treatment for about 3.6%. Adolescents behaviour in orthodontic treatment is very important, because especially the use of fixed orthodontic appliance could have an impact in increase amount of plaque that can cause dental caries, as a result of the difficulty of oral hygiene procedures on patients. The purpose of this study is to determine adolescent behaviour in orthodontic treatment. Method: This study used a cross-sectional analytic design. Sampling technique used is purposive sampling with total sample 66 and respondent were taken with an age range of 12-25 years who are on fixed orthodontic treatment in Denpasar. Data were collected using questionnairies to determine the behavior of adolescents to fixed orthodontic treatment. Result: The results showed that the average respondents have good knowledge 40.9% with good behavior, good attitude 63.6% with good behavior, good cost 42.4% with good behavior, good source of information, less infrastructure 68.2% with less behavior, and good health care 60.6% with good behavior. Conclusion: Based on the results of research conducted that there is a relationship between infrastructure with orthodontic treatment behavior, while other variables do not show the relationship of orthodontic treatment behavior, and the most influential aspect from fixed orthodontic treatment are infrastructure.

Introduction: Dental caries is a disease caused by multifactorial, one of which is a factor in behavior or attitude of oral hygiene. This is caused by to lack of knowledge about maintain oral hygiene. The purpose of this study is to describe the incidence of dental caries of permanent first molar basis of age, gender, behavior and knowledge levels in children aged 9-12 years in SD Negeri 4 Sanur Denpasar. Method: Descriptive study used with cross sectional study with 107 student in SD Negeri 4 Sanur as the sample, the samples was obtained by systematic random sampling. Result: This study shows the prevalence of caries in SD 4 Sanur Denpasar amounted to 52.3%. The prevalence of dental caries in respondents who had a poor behavior of 77.6%. There is a significant associated between the prevalence of caries by the behavior of maintain oral health (p=0.000). While the prevalence of caries based knowledge tends to occur in respondents who have less knowledge both in the amount of 100% and there is a significant associated between dental caries based knowledge to maintain oral health (p=0.003). Conclusion: Based on these results the incidence of caries in SD 4 Sanur Denpasar relatively high. Student in SD 4 Sanur Denpasar mostly caries have poor healthy behavior and have less knowledge. Public health center expected to provide counseling and common practices on how to maintain healthy teeth and mouth regularly.
