Abstract

The fixation stage is the initial stage of making histopathology preparations whose role is to maintain the cell structure of the tissue so that it is like living tissue and prevent tissue damage, thus facilitating the process of macroscopic and microscopic analysis. The fixative solution that is often used for standard preservation in anatomical pathology laboratory examinations is Neutral Buffered Formalin (NBF) 10%, which has the advantage of a pH that is close to neutral and effective in fixing soft tissue for 12-24 hours. However, NBF 10% is carcinogenic and has high toxicity. There is a natural fixative solution, honey, which contains fructose and glucose and has an acidic pH that has antimicrobial, antioxidant and antiautolysis properties. In addition, honey has also been widely used as a preservative because it is easily available, affordable, and without toxicity effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the comparison of the quality of histology preparations of mice heart tissue fixed with 10% NBF and 13% honey with time variations. This research is a type of laboratory experimental research conducted in November 2024-April 2025. The sample used is the heart of healthy male mice. The number of sample preparations used was 27 sample preparations. Data analysis through scoring and statistically processed using non-parametric Kruskal-Walis test, if there is a difference followed by Mann-Whitney test. The results showed that fixation with 13% honey solution with a time variation of 24 hours has the same comparison of preparation quality results with 10% NBF solution for 24 hours. Based on the Mann-Whitney test, the result is 0.018 (p < 0.05) for 13% honey solution for 12 hours and 0.634 (p > 0.05) for 13% honey solution for 24 hours. It can be concluded that fixation with 13% honey solution for 24 hours is effective as an alternative fixation solution with natural ingredients that are safe in fixing tissues

Abstract

Elderly individuals commonly experience physiological, psychological, and social changes that hinder their ability to maintain optimal oral and dental health. Low self-efficacy, combined with insufficient social support, has been identified as a major contributor to poor oral-health behaviors among older adults, particularly in underserved rural communities. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between social support and self-efficacy in maintaining oral and dental health among elderly residents in Sebalong Village, Nguling District, Pasuruan, in 2024. An analytical cross-sectional design was employed, involving 33 elderly participants selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using two standardized instruments: the Social Support Questionnaire (SSQ) and the Geriatric Self-Efficacy Scale for Oral Health (GSEOH), both of which demonstrated high reliability. Descriptive statistics were used to categorize social support and self-efficacy levels, while Spearman’s rank correlation test was applied to examine the relationship between the variables. The findings indicated that most respondents received moderate social support (mean = 13.78), whereas their self-efficacy levels were predominantly low (mean = 29.0). The correlation analysis showed a statistically significant positive relationship between social support and self-efficacy (p = 0.028; r = 0.383), suggesting that higher social support is associated with improved confidence in performing oral-health maintenance behaviors. These results highlight the need for community-based interventions that strengthen emotional, instrumental, informational, and esteem support for elderly individuals. Enhancing social support networks may serve as a practical strategy to improve oral-health behaviors and overall well-being among older adults in rural settings. Strengthened collaboration among families, local health workers, and community programs is recommended to ensure sustainable improvements in elderly oral-health maintenance.

Abstract

Gingivitis is one of the most common oral health problems experienced by pregnant women, largely influenced by hormonal fluctuations that occur throughout gestation. These physiological changes increase gingival vascularity, reduce immune response, and heighten sensitivity to plaque accumulation, thereby placing pregnant women at higher risk of developing gingival inflammation. Preliminary data from the Kras Community Health Centre revealed an alarmingly high prevalence of gingivitis, indicating the need for further investigation. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between gestational age and gingivitis status among pregnant women at the Kras Community Health Centre, Kediri Regency. An analytical cross-sectional design was employed involving 75 pregnant women selected through simple random sampling. Gingivitis status was assessed using the Gingival Index, while gestational age was categorized into three trimesters. Data collection was conducted through direct clinical examinations using standardized observation sheets. Spearman’s Rank Correlation Test was used to analyze the association between the two variables. The results showed that most respondents were in the second trimester (45.3%), and the majority presented with moderate gingivitis (62.7%). Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between gestational age and gingivitis status (ρ = 0.000; α = 0.05), with a strong positive correlation coefficient (r = 0.746). These findings indicate that gingivitis severity tends to increase as pregnancy progresses. In conclusion, gestational age is significantly associated with gingival health status among pregnant women, highlighting the importance of integrating periodontal assessment and oral health education into routine antenatal services to prevent worsening gingival conditions and promote maternal well-being.

Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities often experience substantial challenges in understanding and performing effective oral hygiene practices, which contributes to a disproportionately high prevalence of dental caries and unmet dental treatment needs. Limited cognitive abilities, reduced motor skills, and low health literacy further hinder their ability to maintain proper oral hygiene. Addressing these gaps requires educational approaches that are accessible, engaging, and tailored to their learning characteristics. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Dental Joyful Learning video a short animated educational intervention on improving oral health knowledge among students with intellectual disabilities at SLB Paedagogia Surabaya. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed involving 20 students who met the inclusion criteria. Participants completed a structured Guttman-scale questionnaire before and after a single 3-minute video intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively and statistically using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to determine changes in knowledge. The findings demonstrated a marked improvement in oral health knowledge following the intervention. Prior to the video exposure, 75% of participants fell within the poor knowledge category, with an average score of 34%. After the intervention, 80% of participants reached the good category, with the mean score rising significantly to 83%. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), confirming a statistically significant increase in knowledge. In conclusion, the Dental Joyful Learning video proved effective in enhancing oral health knowledge among children with intellectual disabilities. The use of concise, visually engaging, and cognitively appropriate audiovisual media can serve as a practical and impactful educational strategy in special-needs settings. This study highlights the value of tailored digital health education tools in promoting better understanding and supporting preventive oral health behaviors in this vulnerable population.

Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition that affects various aspects of health, including dental and oral health. Diabetes and periodontitis are the most prevalent human diseases. Diabetes worsens the periodontal condition, but periodontitis also hampers glycemic control in diabetic patients. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge of oral health maintenance and the incidence of periodontitis among elderly patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) at the Tanah Kalikedinding Health Center, Surabaya. The cross-sectional study involved 46 elderly participants diagnosed with T2DM. Data were collected using a dental and oral health maintenance knowledge questionnaire and the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). The majority of respondents were women (73.9%) aged 60-70 years (91.3%), with most having only a junior high school education (47.8%). Knowledge levels were generally low, with 54.35% of respondents classified as having poor knowledge. Most respondents (80.4%) had severe periodontitis, as indicated by CPITN scores. The Pearson correlation test revealed no significant relationship between knowledge levels and CPITN scores (r = -0.134, p = 0.374), suggesting that knowledge about dental and oral health maintenance does not significantly influence the incidence of periodontitis in this sample. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive interventions to improve dental and oral health among elderly T2DM patients, focusing not only on increasing knowledge but also improving access to dental care and promoting healthy lifestyle practices. These efforts are essential to reducing the prevalence of severe periodontitis in this vulnerable population.

Abstract

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent oral health problems among preschool children, and inadequate parental knowledge is often identified as a major contributing factor. Despite existing preventive programs, many parents still lack sufficient understanding of proper oral hygiene practices, which may exacerbate caries risk during early childhood. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parental knowledge of oral health and the incidence of dental caries among preschool children enrolled at PAUD and Kindergarten under the Ar-Rahman Foundation in Jombang. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed involving 39 parents selected through total sampling. Parental knowledge was assessed using a structured questionnaire, while children’s dental caries status was measured using the deft index following WHO guidelines. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that more than half of the parents (51.3%) possessed low knowledge regarding oral health, while the prevalence of dental caries among preschool children remained high. Although descriptive patterns suggested that children of parents with lower knowledge tended to exhibit higher deft scores, statistical results (p = 0.286) indicated no significant association between parental knowledge and dental caries incidence. These findings highlight that knowledge alone may not sufficiently influence caries outcomes without being accompanied by consistent practice, behavioral reinforcement, and adequate access to oral health services. In conclusion, the high prevalence of dental caries observed in this study underscores the need for improved parental education and comprehensive health promotion strategies. Strengthening school-based oral health programs and enhancing parental involvement in preventive practices are essential to reducing the burden of caries among preschool-aged children.

Abstract

The objective this research aimd to ascertain the connection between understanding of oral health and actual mouth cleanliness stats of elderly patients at the Periodontics Specialist Clinic of RSGM Universitas Airlangga. An analytical survey with a cross-sectional method was used for this research. Through purposive sampling, a total of 54 individuals were selected to participate. The findings indicated that most of respondents had a middle level of knowledge regarding oral and dental hygiene, while most exhibited poor oral hygiene status. The Chi-Square test was conducted to the gathered data to examine the correlation between participants’ knowledge and their oral hygiene status. Nevertheless, the analysis revealed no significant association between understanding of oral health and actual mouth cleanliness stats among the elderly. This outcome is presumed to be due to the absence of behavioral data related to the respondents' oral hygiene practices. Consequently, it’s recommended that healthcare providers consistently offer education and counseling on oral and dental care to the elderly in order to enhance their oral health status.

Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) represents a major and growing health challenge globally and in Indonesia, with the number of patients requiring hemodialysis increasing sharply in recent years. This surge in demand places significant financial pressure on healthcare institutions, necessitating precise cost management to maintain service quality and hospital sustainability. This study aims to calculate the actual unit cost of hemodialysis at YARSI Hospital using the Double Distribution (DD) method, which provides a transparent allocation of both direct and indirect costs. Employing a quantitative descriptive case study design, data were collected from hospital financial records and service documentation for 16,789 hemodialysis sessions conducted during 2024. The DD method was applied in two stages: distributing overhead costs to intermediate cost centers, and subsequently distributing intermediate costs such as those related to pharmacy, laboratory, and medical personnel to final service centers. The analysis revealed that the unit cost of Single-Use hemodialysis was IDR 1,927,643, while Re-Use hemodialysis was IDR 1,956,284. The minimal difference between the two systems indicates that high utilization volume significantly influences cost efficiency. These findings confirm that the DD method enables hospitals to obtain a more accurate understanding of cost structures, thereby supporting evidence-based decision-making in pricing and resource management. In conclusion, implementing the Double Distribution approach can enhance cost transparency, optimize efficiency, and guide hospitals in establishing rational service rates without compromising care quality. Future research should involve multi-hospital comparisons to strengthen the generalizability of cost-efficiency models in hemodialysis services.
