Abstract

This study aims to find out the type of onomatopoeia used in the comic and analyse the meaning of the onomatopoeic word. The data were taken from Shazam comic written by Geoff Johns. Observation method was used in collecting the data with several steps applied such as reading, identifying and note taking the onomatopoeic words. This study applied descriptive qualitative method to analyse the data. The theory of types of onomatopoeia by Bredin (1996) was used to analyse the data. This study found fifty five (55) onomatopoeia. Those onomatopoeia words are divided into three types, such as 28 data of direct onomatopoeia, 14 data of associative onomatopoeia, 13 data of exemplary onomatopoeia. Direct onomatopoeia became dominant type used because the comic tells about superhero against enemies who want to destroy the world. The use of onomatopoeia in comic is very important since comic is sequential series of image with character and conversation inside.

Abstract

The study aimed to find out the types of English tenses found in “We All Are Perfectly Imperfect” speech. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in analyzing the data. For collecting the data, this study used observation and documentation method. This study applied Cowan’s theory (2008) to find out the types of English tenses. Those are three types of tenses: past, present, and future tenses in which each having four tense aspects with twelve tense aspects in total. The result of this research study shows that there are seven types of tense aspects come from those three main tenses present, past and future tenses that were found in this speech. In present tense there were simple present, present continuous, present perfect and present perfect continuous tense with total 115 data (48,0%). In past tense there were simple past, and past continuous tense with the total 111 data (46,0%). Then in future tense there was type of simple future tense with 14 data (5,8%). The finding shows that the most dominant type of the tenses found in the speech “We All Are Perfectly Imperfect” is the type of present tense because the speaker in the speech mostly talking about something in the present moment and then the lower number of the data found is the type of future tense with percentage because the speaker was rarely talking about something that is prediction to happen in the future time.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of moral value found in Toy Story movie and the way the characters in the movie reflected the values. This research used Toy Story movie as the data source. This research used qualitative method and the data were analyzed descriptively. The data found in the study were classified by the types of moral value, based on the theory from Audi (2007). The purpose of this study was to find out the moral values reflected by every character in the toy story movie. Based on the analysis, it was found that the moral values deal with t social values in terms of behaviour, relation, interaction and also the social groups that reflected by the characters. In this research the moral values of the characters were reflected by the performance of the characters in the movie. The reflection of such value can be seen from their action and incidents including conversation among the characters in Toy Story movie. The result of the study showed the relation between the actions from the character of Toy Story movie and the conversation affect the character’s attitude that showed how the moral is created in the movie.

Abstract

This study deals with slang words found in Hidden Figure movie. This research attempts to find out the types of slang and the characteristics of slang words in Hidden Figure movie. The theory proposed by Chapman (1988) was used to find the types of slang and the theory from Sumarsono (2007) was used to analysis the characteristics of slang words. The documentation method was used to collect the data by taking advantage of the picture, note taking, and recording. Regarding to the first objective, there are two types of slang words found in this movies, such as primary slang and secondary slang. The occurrence of primary slang dominates the slang type used in this movie, since the speaker can make this slang type is easily understood by people. Referring to the second object, there are six characteristics of slang words found in this movie, which are clipping, creative, metathesis, acronym, use new existing words and metaphor, but the most ones used are clipping, creative, acronym, new existing words and metaphor. Therefore, the mostly characteristics used is use new existing words.

Abstract

This research discussed about the classification of illocutionary acts found in Kathy Buckley’s Stand Up Comedy Videos. There are two problems that found in this research; first, to describe the types of illocutionary acts and second, to find out about the meaning behind the utterances. The data analysed using qualitative method. The data collected by watching some of Kathy Buckley’s stand-up comedy videos on YouTube, taking note the data that possibly contain illocutionary acts, classifying the data into types of illocutionary acts and classifying the data into types of meaning. This research used theory by Searle (1979) and theory by Leech (1981). The data source of this research was taken from Kathy Buckley Stand Up Comedy Videos found on YouTube. Moreover this research found the five types of illocutionary act, its describe as following: There are 55% data of Representative, 28% of Directive Illocutionary Acts, 3% Commissive, 11% of expressive and 3% Declarative.

Abstract

This study is focused to analysis the types of illocutionary acts produced by Harry Potter and Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 movie. This study used theory proposed by Searle (1979) to classify the types of illocutionary acts. The qualitative method is used in this study and used observation method in collecting the data. This study used formal and informal method in presenting the data. According to the data analysis there are 48 utterances of illocutionary act. The highest of illocutionary act produced by Harry and Hermione is directive with percentage 48%. In the second is assertive with percentage 25%. The third is expressive with percentage 15% and the last is commissive with percentage 13%.

Abstract

The study concerned with the code mixing found in Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40. The study aims to identify the types of code mixing found on Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40 as well as to describe the reason of code mixing found on Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40. The data were taken from Travel Secrets Video YouTube Channel Episode 40 on the video “Penjelasan Boy William Dua Kali Gagal Menikah” by applying the theory types of code mixing by Hoffman (1991) and reasons of code mixing by Hoffman (1991). The analysis was done by applying descriptive qualitative and quantitative method with observation method and noted taking technique to collect the data. This study shows that there are three types of code mixing found and three reasons of code mixing found. The study concludes that intra-sentential code mixing is the most frequently used in types of code mixing and talking about particular topic is the most frequently used in reasons of code mixing. By doing code mixing, it is easier to build a sense of solidarity between the host and the guest rather than using only one language and making the conversation more attractive.

Abstract

In literary works such as short stories, novels, dramas, and films, the characters in the film play a very important role in conveying the story. Having a character with a strong personality can make a good impression on the audience and readers. In this case, the role of the author is very important in creating characters that have strong personalities through character development so that they can create a realistic character. This study aims to determine how the author portrays the main character, Frances Halladay, in terms of three dimensions of characterization, by using the character dimensions theory of Egri (1960). This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods, and the object of study is the film Frances Ha, which was released in 2012 and directed by Noah Baumbach. Observation and documentation methods were used in this study by watching the film, reading the script, and taking notes. The results of the research can be concluded that the main character, Frances Halladay, in the film Frances Ha, shows three dimensions of characterization possessed by the main character, namely physiological, psychological, and sociological. In presenting this dimension, this study presents figures and/or dialogue from the film.

Abstract

This research is a plot analysis of "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Poe. This research purpose is to analyze the types of plots and analyze the plot structure in "The Tell-Tale Heart" short story. Research data is extracted from Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Tell-Tale Heart". The method used in data collection is the qualitative method. This study also used theories proposed by Kenney. "The Tell-Tale Heart" is taken because the event in the story begins with the event in the present time, to the next event which is a flashback that supports the first event. Then, proceed back again from the flash-back to the present time. The plot structure has some parts, namely: 1. beginning, 2. middle, 3. end. The beginning of a story is an initial stage that shows the characters in the story, the setting of time and places as well as what the story is about. The middle part contains conflict, complications, and climax.

Abstract

A literary work can be converted into another format, for instance, a film. In filmmaking, the themes taken are derived from our depiction of life. Therefore, a film can raise a psychological theme that discusses one of gripping psychology like personality disorders. One of the personality disorders that often heard of is psychopathy. Through the characters in the film, a psychological perspective of a psychopath is displayed. This research aims to analyze the type of psychopathic behavior depicted by Emma Grossman as the main character in The Bad Seed (2018) film directed by Rob Lowe. The author used a qualitative method in describing the analysis of psychopathic behavior experienced by the main character. In investigating the type of psychopathy on Emma, the theory proposed by Millon and Davis (1998) was applied. Based on the research, Emma's enviousness which turns into revenge and several background personality of her psychopathy match the type of Malignant Psychopath. In addition, this research is expected to provide awareness of psychopathy behavior.
