Abstract

This study concern with analyzed the research entitled An Analysis of Directives Speech Act Found in Little Women Movie Script. This research concerned with identifying the directives speech act used by the characters and how often the types of directives speech act occurred and which types are most frequent appeared in the movie script. This research utilized qualitative method, which is the data were achieved by read the movie script attentively. And also, to present the percentages of result in numerical form, the analysis used quantitative method. Four types of directives speech act were discovered in the utterance of the characters in the Little Women movie script as a result of this analysis. Those are: suggest, order, command, request.

Abstract

Compound sentence has two or more independent clauses and join together by coordinating conjunction. The aims of this study are to find out syndetic coordination in compound sentence and the constituent structure of compound sentence. The data were taken from The Bucket List Story on Wattpad by Neve Adams. This study used qualitative method to analyze the data and used theory proposed by Quirk and Greenbaum(1973) to identify the coordination in compound sentence and used the theory purposed by Brown and Miller (1991) to analyze the constituent structure by using tree diagram. Observation and note taking were used to collect the data. In collecting the data, the researcher used several steps, such as reading the story intensively, taking note and rewriting the data that contained of compound sentence and the last steps and classifying the data based on the types of compound sentence found in the data. Hence, the results of this study shows there are 78 or 100% data involved as syndetic coordination. There are 56 or 71,80% used coordinator and, 14 or 17,95% used coordinator but, 1 data or 1,28% used coordinator or and 7 data or 8,97% used coordinator so. The coordinator and is mostly found in the data with 56 data or 71,80%, then the coordinator for, nor, yet did not find in the data.

Abstract

Songs as one of literary works often use figurative languange, such as personification. To give human attribute to things, animal or abstarct object will give some varied ways in expressing the feeling or thought. this study aimed to analyse the non-living personification on Selected songs of Wiz Khalifa as well as the meaning. The theory used is the theory of (Zhu, 1991) about Non-Living personification and describe the meaning of the lyrics using the theory of meaninf fom (Leech, 1981). The method that used in this study is qualitative research, where the data is collected by observation and note taking methods. After analyzing the data, the writer concludes in each of selected songs , namely: Sucker of pain, Speed me up, Medicated, Hope less romatic, there are some lyrics tahat contain Non-Living personification based on personidfication Theory by (Zhu, 1991), The result show there are 5 data for non-living personification in the lyrics. The sentence that contained this personification have conceptual, connotative , social and thematic meaning based on the theory of meaning by (leech, 1981).

Abstract

This research focuses on the transcription and the script of the movie Armageddon by Robert Roy Pool and Jonathan Hensleigh. In this study the writer used qualitative method in collecting the data. This research used theory from (Schuster, 1966). The findings show there are three themes such as Love Theme, Patriotism Theme and Survival Theme. Love theme explained about the love story between Grace and A.J. between Harry Stamper as Grace's father who is also her second boss. Meanwhile, in patriotism theme, it is explained by the existence of a special mission from NASA for professional drillers to go out into space in order to save the earth and The survival theme is shown by various strategies and struggles carried out by NASA through the formation of a drilling team to save the world through Harry's team.

Abstract

This research aims to give further information about the visual and verbal signs contained in the video advertisement. Advertisement is the way to attract people's attention in promoting or selling the product and service. This study's main focus concerns the verbal sign and visual sign and their meanings that appeared in a video of Hyundai advertisement, which is Positive Energy Challenge. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study to convey the hidden meaning found in the verbal and visual signs in the video advertisement. The data were taken from the video of Positive Energy Challenge downloaded from YouTube. The study used the observation method in collecting the data through the note-taking technique. Regarding the analysis, there are two main theories used in this study. The first theory of semiotics by Ferdinand de Saussure (1983) is to find out the verbal sign and visual signs. The second is the theory of meaning by Barthes (1968) to analyze the meaning of the verbal sign and visual sign and supported by the theory of color terms proposed by Wierzbicka (1996). The result of the study shows that 5 verbal signs and 4 visual signs contained in the video advertisement have a positive meaning and can attract the attention of audiences.

Abstract

There are two objectives of the study the first one is to identify the main character development in the “Bohemian Rhapsody” movie. the second is to analyze characterization of the main character in “Bohemian Rhapsody” movie. The data of this study were taken from the movie entitled Bohemian Rhapsody. The data source in this study was take from the movie in the movie was analyzed descriptively based on the theory How To Analize Fiction proposed by William Kenney (1956). The main character development was analyzed into two categorizes which is simple(flat) character and complex(round) characters. The characterization of the main character was analyzed into three categorize which is physiological, sociological, and psychological dimension of the main characterization. The characterization of Freddie Mercury over all is that he is a kind person, humble, gentle and romantic person but in the middle of the story he changed into a bad person, ego and unfriendly person which make him a complex(round) character.

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to find out the types of flouting maxim found in Cinderella movie and the context situations influence the interpretation of flouting in the Cinderella movie. The researcher used the theory t proposed by Grice in his book (1975) to analyze the types of flouting maxims in Cinderella movie and the theory of the context of situation by Halliday and Hassan (1985). The method that used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. The results show that in Cinderella movie, the characters flout all the maxims with 20 data of flouting. Those are: Flouting Maxim of Quantity 7 data (35%), Flouting Maxim of Quality 2 data (10%), Flouting Maxim of Relevance 5 data (25%) and Flouting Maxim of Manner 6 data (30%). From those forms, Flouting Maxim of Quantity has the highest occurrences used among others. The characters in this movie mostly flouted the maxim of quantity to strengthen their opinion. They were giving too much or less information to the listener or more unnecessary one. Moreover, It also would create inexplicable statement to be uttered in some particular situations which could not be understood by the listener.

Abstract

This study analyzes the figurative language used in song lyrics of Michael Buble’s song lyrics. The song lyric was analyzed based on the theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) to find out the types of figurative language in the song lyrics and the theory of meaning based on theory proposed by Leech (1981) to find out the meaning of each figurative language. The study aims to provide a better understanding of the figurative language types and the meaning of figurative language on Michael Buble’s song lyrics. This study used qualitative method to collect data. The types of figurative found in Michael Buble’s song consist of 11 types, they are simile, metaphor, personification synecdoche, metonymy, imagery, symbol, allusion, paradox, hyperbole, and irony. Meanwhile, the types of meanings of figurative language found were only 5 out of 7 types, they are conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, collocative meaning, affective meaning and thematic meaning

Abstract

The title of this study is “Organic Imagery in the Novel Entitled If Cats Disappeared From The World”. This study focused on the analysis of organic imagery in the novel entitled If Cats Disappeared From The World. The objective of this study is to classify and identify the dominant feelings of the organic imageries in the novel entitled If Cats Disappeared From The World. This study used the theory by Perrine in Johnson & Arp (2017) about the types of imagery, specifically organic imagery as the guidance in conducting the analysis. The data of this study were collected by using observation method and analyzed by using qualitative research method. The finding of this study were presented in formal and informal method. The result of this study showed that there are a total of 95 organic imageries found in the novel entitled If Cats Disappeared From The World. The types of feeling within the organic imagery include the feeling of happiness, sadness, anger, depression, surprisement, embarrassment, amazement, fear, maturity, and pain. Based on the result of this study, the study concluded that organic imagery is used in the novel entitled If Cats Disappeared From The World to focus the depiction of the main character through his thoughts and feelings to match with the theme of the novel.

Abstract

This research is entitled “Command Directive Illocutionary Act Discovered in Central Intelligence Movie by Rawson Marshall. This study aims to determine the directive illocutionary speech acts and the context of the situation in the directive illocutionary speech acts expressed by the characters in the film. The directive illocutionary acts are discussed using the theory of directive illocutionary acts proposed by Kreidler (1998: 189-190). The context of the situation is discussed using the situational context theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 12). In collecting data, first, the writer watches the movie and marks the utterances that contain the illocutionary act of directive commands in the film script. The method used in analyzing the data is a qualitative descriptive method. The writer classifies the data based on the sentence structure of the directive illocutionary acts of commands and then analyzes the context of the situation. In presenting the findings, formal and informal methods are used. The formal method is used to show the percentage of the sentence structure of directive illocutionary acts using tables, and the informal method is used to describe the data descriptively through words. In this study, 21 data were found regarding illocutionary acts of directive command.
