Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types of setting and to discuss of how the setting constructs the plot. The data of this study were taken from Sherlock Holmes movie. The theories used in this study are theory proposed by Kenney (1966) to determine the setting of the movie and the theory proposed by Klarer (2004) to analyze the plot construction. Based on Kenney’s theory, setting can be divided into two types, namely: neutral setting and spiritual setting. The findings of this study related to the neutral setting showed there are 3 types such as setting of place was found 20 (62,5%), setting of time was found 4 (12,5%) and setting of environment was found 6 (18,75%). As for spiritual setting, it was found only 2 (6,25%). Furthermore, based on the analysis of how the setting constructs the plot in the movie, it can be concluded that the data for the construction of plot there are 4 types which are exposition was found 1 (10%), complication was found 4 (40%), climax was found 4 (40%) and resolution was found 1 (10%).

Abstract

This study conducted to deal with two research method problems which are (1) What are the characterization of the main characters in the movie The Kissing Booth. Qualitative method was used to analysed the data in this study. To answer the first and the second problem this study applied the theory from Halliday (1999). The discussion is focused on two main characters, namely Elle Evans and Noah Flynn. The data source was a movie entitled The Kissing Booth. The data were collected through library research by watching the movie, reading script, and note taking. The result of this study shows that are four aspects of characterization of the main characters. In showing those aspects, the writer presented the picture or dialogue from the movie. There were four aspects of characterization analysed by the writer, there are physical appearance, personality, social status, and social relationship.

Abstract

The study aims to analyse the constituent structure of the simple sentences which were constructed in the “Peter Pan” novel. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The steps in taking and collecting the data were reading the novel, underlining the simple sentences, and analysis the constituent structures. The theory of Brown and Miller (1991) to represented the tree diagram and constituent structures. And used the theory of Quirk et al (1973) to support the analysis. Based on the results, this research found that there were 182 data of simple sentences which were used in the “Peter Pan” novel by J. M. Barrie. The sentences which were found divided into two branches, those are Noun Phrase (NP) and Verb Phrase (VP). Most of the Noun Phrase (NP) that was found in the sentences have the daughter of Determiner, Noun and Pronoun. Meanwhile, the Verb Phrase have the daughters, there were Auxiliary, Verb, Noun Phrase, Prepositional Phrase, Adjective Phrase and Adverbial Phrase.

Abstract

The objective of this study is focused on analysing and determining the kinds of coordinate clause of compound declarative sentence in CBS News that related to article of education in the past six months. Observation and documentation method were applied for collecting the data of this study. On the other hand, this study applied two methods for analysing and determining the data found, there were formal method to present the result and informal method to determine the data found. The data found in this study was used the theory that proposed by Davidson (2002). For the result, this study has found 38 sentences containing coordinate clause of compound declarative sentence. There were two kinds of coordinate clause of compound declarative sentence from the data source: coordinate clause without conjunction or use punctuation is a comma (4), coordinate clause with conjunction “and” (20), “but” (6), “or” (4), “so” (3), “nor” (1).

Abstract

This study is concerned with analyzing the code mixing found in CURHAT BANG Denny Sumargo YouTube channel. This study aims to identify the types and the reasons of code mixing found on CURHAT BANG Denny Sumargo YouTube channel. This study applied the theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) to analyze the data. The data of this study were taken from one video entitled “Aku Dan El Barack Menangis Bareng Di Garasi Aku Udah Gak Percaya Cinta Lagi”. In realizing the objectives, this study applied descriptive qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. Then this study used the observation method and noted taking technique to collect the data. This study found three types of code mixing, and the most frequent type found in this study is intra-sentential code mixing. This study found five reasons of code mixing, and expressing group identity is the most frequently used in this conversation. The data of code mixing in this study were taken from the utterances of two participants, those are between Denny Sumargo and Jessica Iskandar

Abstract

The writer conducted research on the translation strategy used in the subtitled film "Parker" by Taylor Hackford. This research focuses on examining the various types of translation strategies discovered. The data in this study is analyzed using Gottlieb's (1992:166) theory of subtitling strategy. The data source is a DVD copy of the original film. Listening technique and note-taking technique were used to identify and classify the data. The unit of analysis in this research is every utterance that has a subtitling strategies and is classified into ten subtitling strategies contained in the film’s subtitle. The total data collected is 914 complete utterances in English and Indonesian. The results showed that there were only 8 strategies out of 10 strategies that were applied with the highest to lowest frequency : Transfer (71.11%). Imitation (313.67%), paraphrase (7.98%), condensation (3.61%), decimation (1.57%), deletion (1.20%). and others of less than 1%, such as expansion (0.65%), and transcription (0.21).

Abstract

This study focused on the use of language style in the movie "Little Buddha" which shows how language style is used in society. There are two problems to be solved in the study, the types of language styles used on a conversation in the "Little Buddha" movie, and the factor influencing the choice of language style in the "Little Buddha" movie. This study's theoretical framework is based on Joos (1967) states there are five types of language style, namely frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style, intimate style, and Holmes (1992) There are four factors in choosing language variation that is participant, setting, topic, and function. The results of this study that there are 25 data of the type of language styles and elaborate factors influencing the choice of language style which is occurred in "Little Buddha" movie and intimate style becomes the most dominant type.

Abstract

Spoken language will always involve language style. This depends on the situation in which the conversation is taking place, and also the participants. This study was conducted to see the language style of the conversations in Premature movie. The data were analyzed by using qualitative method. The data analyzed based on the theory of language style proposed by Joos (1967), and it combined with the theory of function of language proposed by Holmes (1992). The data were taken from the conversation that uttered by the characters in Premature movie. Based on the analysis there are 19 data that found in the data source, there are four types of language style and six types of language function were found. The four language styles are four types of language style which are, formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. Casual style is the most dominant type in this movie. The six function of language that found by the researcher which are expressive function, directive function, referential function, metalinguistic function, poetic function, and phatic function. The most function of language occurred in the data analysis is directive function.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out the types of slang words found in Anne Marie's song lyrics and to analyze the meaning of those slang words. The data of this study were taken from the song lyrics by Anne Marie. This study chose Anne Marie’s song lyrics as data source because there are many slang words found in song lyrics. This study used the theory proposed by Kipfer and Chapman (2007:8) to classify the types of slang words and the theory proposed by Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning used. This study applied observation method in collecting the data of slang words. Qualitative method was used in analyzing the data. This study used formal and informal methods in presenting the finding. Based on the data analysis, there are 17 data of slang words found in Anne Marie’s song lyrics. Those slang words are classified into primary and secondary slang. The dominant type of slang found was primary slang with 16 data. Based on the theory of types of meaning by Leech (1981), there are two types of meaning exist in those slang words, such as; conceptual meaning and social meaning. Conceptual meaning occurred with 16 data and followed by social meaning with 1 data. Conceptual meaning dominantly appeared in Anne Marie’s Song lyrics.

Abstract

Compound sentence is a sentence that has a couple or extra independent clause that connected by conjunction coordinator Fanboys, semicolon/coma, and conjunctive adverb. The center of this study is on compound sentence found in “Crazy Rich Asians” novel by Kevin Kwan. The aim of this study are follows: (1) to find out types of compound sentence in Crazy Rich Asians novel by Kevin Kwan. (2) to analyze the constituent structure of compound sentence found in Crazy Rich Asians novel by Kevin Kwan. Moreover, qualitative research method is used to analyze the data found in this study. In order to analyze the data, there are two theories are used. The first main theory is from Oshima and Hogue (1998) about type of sentence, and the second as supporting theory is from Brown and Miller (1991) about tree diagram structure. There are two ways of presenting the data in this study; formal and informal method. The formal method used in form of tree diagram and the informal method used words to explain the data descriptively. The result of the study shows type of compound sentence found in the novel. There are 38 data connected with coordinator, only 3 data connected by semicolon / coma, and the rest 2 following data connected with conjunctive adverb.
