Abstract

This study aims to study the damage and preserving ancient canals of Indrapatra Fort, Aceh. This study uses archaeological research methods that are descriptive analysis, with data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and documentation studies. The results of the study show that Indrapatra Fort is a defensive building inherited from the Aceh sultanate that is estimated to have been built in the 16th century AD. Inside the Indrapatra Fortress Complex, there are canals or waterways that function to regulate the flow of water when a flood occurs. Archaeological technical studies found that the condition of the canal was mostly covered with earth. After excavations were carried out in August 2021, the condition of the canal was 70–80% damaged. The form of damage is broken, cracked, collapsed, crushed, and even shifted. Therefore, the authors hope that the local government and the community will protect and maintain the canal structure of Indrapatra Fort so that the structure can continue to exist in the community.

Abstract

The Old Banten region is proof of the greatness of the Banten Sultanate, which once stood in the west of Java Island for nearly three centuries. Many experts have studied the historical data, such as the explorer's travel notes or ancient maps, and done a lot of excavation to discover evidence that describes the splendor of the Banten Sultanate civilization. Even so, several archaeological data around the area are still untouched and can be explored. Based on the studies conducted, by combining the latest research, historical sources, and field observation data, the results show a match between the historical data and the current archaeological evidence. This paper also explores the areas considered as potential for future research.

Abstract

The development of Islamic tourism in the City of Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar Regency has considerable potential due to the abundance of Islamic archaeological sites distributed throughout the region. However, the utilization of these sites as a foundation for Islamic tourism development has not yet been optimized. This study aims to analyze the utilization of Islamic archaeological sites as a basis for the development of Islamic tourism among communities in Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar Regency. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation of several Islamic archaeological sites, including mosques and burial complexes. The findings indicate that Islamic archaeological sites possess high historical, cultural, and spiritual values and have strong potential to be developed as Islamic tourism attractions through active community involvement, the strengthening of educational functions, and the integration of local cultural values. Nevertheless, challenges remain in terms of site management, accessibility, and coordination among stakeholders. This study is expected to contribute academically to the discourse on the utilization of Islamic archaeological sites and provide practical implications for community-based Islamic tourism development and the preservation of cultural heritage in other regions with similar characteristics

Abstract

The rapid advancement of Society 5.0 has created a digital paradox: technological connectivity has increased, yet moral degradation manifested in cyberbullying, hoaxes, and digital hedonism (flexing) has escalated. Existing legal regulations are often insufficient to address the root causes of these behaviors, which lie in the spiritual and psychological realms. This study aims to explore the relevance of Ibnu Miskawaih's moral philosophy as a fundamental solution to the modern digital moral crisis. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research design, utilizing a hermeneutic approach adapted from the "Research Onion" framework. The primary data source is the book Tahdhib al-Akhlaq wa Tathir al-A'raq. The findings reveal that Miskawaih’s concept of Al-Wasath (The Golden Mean) serves as a relevant "soul therapy" (Tibb al-Nufus) for digital users. Specifically, the harmonization of the soul's faculties offers ethical solutions: Al-Hikmah (Wisdom) to counter disinformation, Al-'Iffah (Temperance) to restrain digital consumerism, and Al-Syaja'ah (Courage) to manage anger in online interactions. The study concludes that integrating Miskawaih’s philosophy into digital literacy is essential for building internal self-defense mechanisms against moral decadence in the cyber world.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relevance of Ibn Khaldun's concept of 'Ashabiyah to the solidarity of slaves (mamalik) in supporting the development of science during the Mamluk Dynasty. This study is a library research using qualitative methods with a historical-analytical approach. The results of the study show that the concept of 'ashabiyah popularized by Ibn Khaldun is a socio-political concept that focuses on the dynamics of group power and social solidarity in building and maintaining civilization. This is relevant to the establishment of the Mamluk Dynasty, which was followed by the advancement of science during the Mamluk Dynasty. This period of progress was realized by the slaves (mamalik), who were known to have a very strong sense of social solidarity and high loyalty to their leaders and tribes, enabling them to achieve their main goal, namely the development of science in various fields, which reached its peak during that period. The power of social solidarity during the Mamluk Dynasty is relevant to Ibn Khaldun's concept of 'ashabiyah, which encourages the creation of an environment conducive to the advancement of science

Abstract

Philip K. Hitti's History of the Arabs (1937) is a canonical work that shaped the Western understanding of Arab history. This article presents a historiographical critique of the text using Edward Said's Orientalism, Michel-Rolph Trouillot's concept of silencing, and Chase F. Robinson's study of Islamic historiography. The analysis reveals that while Hitti's work aimed to reclaim Arab history from Orientalist bias, it remained trapped within the same discursive logic. Its "rise and fall" narrative systematically silences the Ottoman period, reflecting both Hitti's Arab nationalist bias and his Christian sectarian perspective as a Maronite. Moreover, his philological method disregards the epistemology of classical Islamic historiography. The article concludes that the current significance of Hitti's work lies not in its factual authority, but as a mirror of intellectual ambivalence in the late colonial era.

Abstract

This study identifies the variety of watermarks, traces their origins and production periods, and analyzes the role of watermarks in Banjar manuscripts to understand the history of manuscript. Employing historical and codicological approaches, data were collected through literature reviews and direct observation of manuscripts held by the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia and the South Kalimantan Regional Library, supplemented by data from the Katalog Naskah Nusantara Indonesia Tengah. Findings reveal that the Pro Patria watermark predominates, followed by Lion Concordia and Tre Lune. Of the 15 manuscripts and 2 archival records examined, two manuscripts and one archive lacked watermarks but exhibited distinct chain and laid lines. Furthermore, three manuscripts contained two different watermarks within a single volume, and countermarks were identified in eight manuscripts. These results diverge from the Katalog Naskah Nusantara Indonesia Tengah, which is dominated by the Man in the Moon watermark. Correlation analysis indicates a social stratification regarding access to high-quality paper. Out of 40 religious manuscripts, only five lacked watermarks. Conversely, of the 32 literary manuscripts, only six featured watermarks all of which were related to the chronicles of the Banjar Kingdom (Hikayat Banjar). These findings suggest that during that period, the intellectual and political elite maintained exclusive access to high-quality imported paper, reflecting the influence of royal patronage on the selection of writing media. In contrast, literary manuscripts copied by the general public utilized only unwatermarked paper.
