Abstract

This research seeks to portray an outline of the description of Indian and Malay cultural adaptation carried out by Muslim Indians in Medan City. The purpose of this research is to see how the process of the Muslim Indian ethnic community makes cultural adaptations in order to maintain their cultural identity and integrate with the local culture (Malay) in Medan city. This research is a social and cultural history research, using library research method and anthropological approach. The results of this study indicate that since the beginning of his arrival to the city of Medan ethnic Indian Muslims received a warm welcome and the adaptation process went well, this is because the ethnic Indian Muslims who came to the city of Medan tried to blend in quickly and did not accentuate their identity (as Indians) thickly even they were able to assimilate into anything and anyone many who assimilated into Malay, Bugis, Javanese and others it was done through the marriage process. The patterns of life of the local community are successfully followed so that there is a very close bond of brotherhood and ethnic Indian Muslims do not look like foreign immigrants in Medan city. In addition, through the Tepung Tawar tradition which is one of the traditions of Indian origin which can then be accepted by the Malay community in Medan city and even become one of the traditions that have been attached to the Malay community, the steps taken by ethnic Indian Muslims at that time by eliminating Hindu elements and embedding Islamic values in it, so that the cultural adaptation process carried out by ethnic Indian Muslims in Medan city is considered successful.

Abstract

Abstract The implementation of the Dutch Ethical Policy, particularly in the field of education, marked a turning point in the cultural development of the Indonesian archipelago. It fostered the rise of a new intellectual class driven by aspirations for reform and emancipation, who articulated their ideas through socio-religious and educational organizations. This study investigates the intellectual polarization among Gayo Muslims that emerged in the wake of this policy. It addresses two core inquiries: the causes behind the polarization and its subsequent dynamics. Adopting a historical method with a socio-cultural approach, the research finds that the Dutch educational system significantly influenced this intellectual divide. Initially resisted by traditionalist circles who perceived it as a deviation from Islamic orthodoxy the Western model of education gradually produced a cohort of critical thinkers. These individuals began to challenge established religious rituals, labeling them as inconsistent with the essence of Islam. As a result, Gayo Muslim intellectuals became ideologically fragmented into two primary camps: the traditionalist group (Kaom Tue) and the modernist or reformist group (Kaom Mude).

Abstract

This study aims to examine the revitalization of Teungku Chik Pante Kulu's tomb. He is a cleric in Aceh and the author of Hikayat Prang Sabi, a saga that sparked the spirit of the Acehnese in the war against the Dutch. Apart from the manuscript, his existence can be proven through his grave, which is in the village of Lam Leot, Kuta Cot Glie Subdistrict, Aceh Besar District. The results of the study found that this tomb dates from 1836. His grave is marked by a plain tombstone and has been renovated so that it no longer displays the characteristics of an ancient tomb. Through this study, it is known that the way to revitalize this grave is by promoting the role and contribution of Teungku Chik Pante Kulu in defending Aceh from the Dutch. This method is considered very effective because it can increase public knowledge so that the tomb of Tengku Chik Pante Kulu becomes a historical tourist destination in Aceh. The existence of the tomb is also a source of historical, archaeological, and cultural knowledge for the next generation.
