Abstract

This research aims to analyze development of surau which was originally a traditional educational institution, where Bumiputra children learn traditional norms, ethics, manners and the Islamic religion. In Minangkabau tradition, boys who have reached puberty are prohibited from sleeping in the Rumah Gadang. Traditional surau education was reformed into a madrasa at the beginning of the 20th century. Interestingly, on Punjung Island there is a surau driven by "women" which is the basis for the birth and development of the Aisyiah organization. The research method uses historical research methods consisting of four stages, namely: Heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results of the research reveal Maria Khubtiah's contribution to advancing Islamic religious education on Punjung Island from 1942-1995. Traditional surau education was reformed into a madrasa at the beginning of the 20th century. The surau underwent renewal to become a semi-modern educational model. Maria Kubtiah is a figure who utilizes the function of the Surau and the 'Aisyiyah Organization as a forum for the Islamic Education movement. Maria Kubtiah is recognized by the community as a figure mobilizing women and a religious education figure in the Punjung Island community. Maria Kubtiah also served as an educator at the Muhammadiyah School from 1946-1970. In establishing the 'Aisyiyah Girls' Dormitory, Maria Kubtiah was appointed as the first girls' dormitory supervisor in 1964-1965. After PRRI, Maria Kubtiah founded a school at the Jambak surau as an effort to provide an alternative educational platform because the community education situation was chaotic due to the PRRI upheaval. He continued to struggle through critical times and became Leader of the Aisyiah Punjung Island Branch from 1950-1995.

Abstract

The following paper aims to explore fundamental questions surrounding the status of the work of renowned orientalist Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje. Although the term "historical genre" naturally arises when reading Mekka in the Latter Part of the 19th Century, this article critically questions whether Hurgronje's work should be categorized as a historical narrative or as a historical source. Through further investigation, this paper elaborates on and reviews the background of the work, provides a broad description of the book's content, analyzes its writing characteristics, and then connects these to the concepts of 'historical writing' and 'historical sources.' Therefore, this article opens a discussion on the nature and purpose of Hurgronje's writings and their relevance as a contribution to understanding the history of Mecca in the late 19th century, including the development of Islamic historiography in Indonesia. The data collection for this paper is based on library research. A historical approach is applied to this study, reinforced by Berelson's Content Analysis theory.

Abstract

Trade and commerce reform during the Umayyad dynasty marked a significant period in economic history, characterized by policy changes that influenced commercial activities within the caliphate. The reforms implemented by caliphs, particularly Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, played a crucial role in stabilizing the government and enhancing trade dynamics. Previous research has explored the relationship between trade reforms and economic growth, shedding light on the interconnectedness between trade practices, economic development, and urban growth. The study of trade and commerce reform during the Umayyad dynasty presents a compelling research area with key phenomena to explore, including administrative and financial policies, trade costs, and the role of imported inputs in driving domestic growth. Understanding the mechanisms through which policy changes affected economic activities is essential for formulating effective research objectives. By setting clear research objectives to analyze the impact of policy changes on trade dynamics and economic growth, scholars can gain insights into the multifaceted nature of trade reforms during the Umayyad era. The implications of research on trade and commerce reform offer valuable lessons for understanding historical trade dynamics and their enduring impact on economic structures, contributing to a deeper understanding of economic development and governance within the Umayyad caliphate

Abstract

The spread of Twelver Shiism across the Muslim world owes its origin to the 1979 Iranian revolution led by Āyatullāh Al-Khumaynī. Shiism pervaded the soil of Nigeria afterwards in the early 1980s through the MSSN campus activism in Northern Nigeria spearheaded by Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. The prominent protagonists who kept the Shiite flag aloft were the Lebanese traders in Kano State accompanied by the students in Northern Universities in Nigeria, who saw the success of the Iranian revolution as a harbinger of practicability of theocratic government in Nigeria. While most writers focused on Shiite development in North-Western Nigeria, the paper delved into the discourse on diffusion of Shiism across North-Central Nigeria. The research adopted a historical method to analyse the sporadic spread of Twelver Shiism to Nigeria’s North-Central under the umbrella of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. Despite the fact that the Shiites in North-Central Nigeria upheld the Twelver doctrines, the Shiites in Okene area of Kogi State do not pay homage to El-Zakzaky. The paper concluded that the former’s indifference to the latter’s superintendence was based on political reasons.
