Abstract

A chest drain is a medical procedure performed to remove air, fluid, or blood that has accumulated in the pleural cavity, the space between the lungs and the chest wall, to maintain normal lung function. The insertion of a chest drain can cause partial lung collapse or atelectasis. One of the post-surgical care strategies for patients with chest drains is deep breathing exercise therapy. To evaluate the effectiveness of deep breathing exercises on the rate of lung expansion in patients with respiratory disorders using chest drains. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample consisted of 17 patients with chest drains, selected using total sampling. The measurement tool used was a Peak Flow Meter. Based on the Paired t-test and independent t-test results, the p-value was less than 0.05, indicating significance. The effectiveness test using Cohen's d effect size showed pre-test (1.0) and post-test (3.1) values greater than 0.8, indicating a large effect size. Deep breathing exercise therapy significantly and substantially affects lung expansion rate in patients with respiratory disorders using chest drains.

Abstract

World Health Organization (WHO) described traditional medicine as a health practice with strong historical and cultural roots, which has global acceptability and applicability. It is an important and often underestimated health resource with many applications, especially in the prevention and management of lifestyle-related chronic diseases. This research assessed the knowledge, skills and attitude on the alternative health care modalities of the resident of Poblacion West, General Tinio, Cabanatuan City, Philippines. The researchers used a quantitative descriptive correlational research method and a purposive sampling technique to examine the data from the respondents. A self-made questionnaire survey form was used to face-to-face collect data from the respondents. The research showed that most of the barangay health workers were female and do not have enough knowledge and skills to perform reflexology, acupressure, chiropractics, and nutritional therapy, but the respondents showed interest to learn more despite the fact that they have limited knowledge and skills about these modalities. Results were presented to the Barangay Health Workers (BHW)’s and heads to address the result of the study and possibly be the basis of health programs and development to aid respondents’ gaps in their knowledge and practices of traditional healthcare modalities.

Abstract

The rapid growth of online education has necessitated an in-depth investigation into the factors influencing teaching effectiveness in online learning environments. This study aims to identify and examine the key factors contributing to the online teaching effectiveness of nurse instructors through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and develop a tool to measure the Online Teaching Effectiveness (OTE) of nursing instructors. Preliminary item statements were developed based on a thorough review of relevant literature, resulting in a 49-item scale. A multidisciplinary panel member then validated the content, reducing it to a 48-item Content Validated item statement. Pilot testing with 596 third-level students from the College of Nursing at NEUST led to a final set of 41 items. The EFA in this study was carried out using a single random subsample of 410 Level IV Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) student nurses from Higher Education Institutions across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao in the Philippines. All respondents were enrolled in the BSN program and participated in online education. This sample size adhered to the "10-times rule," ensuring at least ten observations per variable for the Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). Using the five-step Exploratory Factor Analysis Protocol (preliminary analysis for evaluation of data suitability for EFA, factor extraction, factor retention, and factor rotation) determines the data suitability for Exploratory Factor Analysis. This process, employing Varimax and Kaiser Normalization, revealed a 3-factor structure: (1) Active Learning, (2) Instructor-Learner Connection, and (3) Modern Teaching, comprising 28-item statements. Together, these factors explained 75.221% of the variance. The 75.221% variance explained by the three factors is a relatively high value, suggesting that the model provides a good fit to the data. The findings can guide instructional practices by highlighting the importance of active learning, strong instructor-student relationships, and the use of modern teaching techniques. By understanding these factors, educators can make informed decisions to improve their instructional practices and enhance student success. While these findings shed light on online teaching effectiveness in nursing education, further psychometric validation is needed to refine the instrument. Future research should explore its applicability across different samples and disciplines to better evaluate online teaching quality.

Abstract

Approximately 80% of stroke patients experience weakness/hemiparesis on one side of the body due to vascular abnormalities in certain hemispheres. If hemiparese is not treated immediately, it can cause permanent disability. Supporting examination that can be used to diagnose hemiparese is a non-contrast head CT scan. There are several ranges that can be applied to the examination. This affects the dose received by the patient. This study aims to compare the radiation dose (CTDIvol and DLP) in non-contrast head CT scan examination in hemiparese cases between the range from vertex to sinus maxillaris and the range from vertex to basic cranii. The research was conducted at KRT Setjonegoro Wonosobo Hospital in December 2023 using quantitative method. Data were obtained from a non-contrast head CT scan examination with hemiparese cases using the range vertex to sinus maxillary and range vertex to basic crani. Results: In the head CT Scan examination of hemiparese cases, the CTDIvol value for the range Vertex to sinus maxillaris and the range Vertex to basic cranii is 45.5 ± 12.6 mGy and 48.8 ± 14.6 mGy, while for the DLP for the range Vertex to sinus maxillaris is 609.8 ± 47.9 mGy.cm and for the range Vertex to basic cranii is 878.9 ± 42.1 mGy.cm. CTDIvol value is found to have no significant difference, but for the DPL value there is a significant difference in the non-contrast head CT scan examination without contrast with hemiparese cases The 2 CTDIvol and DLP values are still in accordance with the DRL recommendations recommended by Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN).
