Abstract

Crude Palm Oil (CPO) is an important Indonesian agricultural product as a raw material for cooking oil and an export commodity. In order to achieve maximum profit, the companies producing the CPO need to produce it efficiently. This study used the data from the 2013 Annual Manufacturing Survey conducted by the Statistics Indonesia. In this survey, there were 547 factories producing CPO. The efficiency measurement utilized the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach using value of production as the output and two inputs, namely the number of workers and raw material value. The results showed that there are 17 factories out of 547 factories which are efficient indicated by the efficiency value of one. Factories owned by the private national companies have the highest average of efficiency followed by the foreign and government-owned companies. In regards to location, factories located in Kalimantan Island have higher average efficiency compared to those located in Sumatra Island and other islands. Meanwhile, factories with local market orientation have a higher efficiency compared to those with export market orientation. Keywords: CPO, efficiency, data envelopment analysis (DEA)ABSTRAKCrude Palm Oil (CPO) merupakan salah satu andalan produk pertanian Indonesia baik sebagai bahan baku minyak goreng maupun komoditas ekspor.

Abstract

The creation of value-based performance measurement can be an alternative in measuring the company's financial performance. Results can be used as indicators of assessments by investors, and these indicators can influence the stock returns. Besides, macroeconomic variables also affect stock returns. This study aimed to analyze the financial performance of companies in the process of creation of value-added with EVA, MVA, and Tobin's Q approach. Impacts of these performance measurements and macroeconomic variables (exchange rates, interest rates, and inflation) on stock returns of the subsector animal feed industry were studied. Descriptive analysis was applied in analyzing the company's financial performance. The impacts of the company financial performance and macroeconomic variables were assessed by using panel data regression analysis. The results related to the company's performance showed that 1) EVA performance dominantly obtained a positive EVA value; 2) MVA performance predominantly produced a positive MVA value in 3 companies and a negative MVA value in the other company; 3) Tobin’s Q performance predominantly generated a value of Q>1 in 2 companies and a value of Q<1 in the other 2 companies. The results of the panel data regression analysis concluded the independent variables influencing the stock return were the performance variables while the macroeconomic variables had no effects on stock return. Keywords: macroeconomic variables, panel data regression, stock return, subsector of animal feed, value-based performance

Abstract

Indonesia is the world’s fourth biggest coffee exporter with a market share of 9.7 %. This study examined the asymmetric price transmission in the coffee market between the importing countries (United State, German, and Japan) and Indonesia. AECM (Asymmetric Error Correction Model) was used to examine the asymmetric price transmission by using the monthly data from 2005 to 2014. The result of the study showed  that there is no price asymmetry in the coffee market in the long run because there is no market power in the coffee market; however,   in the short run, there is asymmetry price transmission in the United State and Japan due to the adjustment cost. Keywords: coffee, asymmetric price transmission, AECM

Abstract

Agric finance is one of the important components in the development of coffee plant which is one of the main export commodities of Indonesia. This research aims to 1) identify the factors affecting credit access to formal sources of finance by the farmers, and 2) analyze the effects of credit on the farmer income. The study was conducted in the Arabica coffee production center at Aceh Tengah district. Data were collected from 73 farmers by the stratified random sampling. The data analysis was conducted using the probit model, and the results showed that the factors affecting farmers’ access to credit include age, dummy of creditor‘s visit and farmers' knowledge. Using simultaneous equation model (2SLS), the estimation results showed that credit has positively increased production and food consumption of organic Arabica coffee of the farmers. Correspondingly, the simulation results showed that the increase in production and  consumption of food will increase the productivity of the labor in the family, and this is the dominant input in organic Arabica coffee farming  that will increase the farmers' income. Keywords: organic Arabica coffee, credit, simultaneous (2SLS), farmers’ income, probit

Abstract

Export performance of a country is influenced by many aspects, some of which include infrastructure and institutionalization. The major problem that is faced by Indonesia is the low quality of infrastructure and institutionalization; as a result, the trading cost is relatively high. If this is not dealt immediately, it will cause a decline in the Indonesian export performance. This research was aimed to analyze the influence of infrastructure and institutionalization as well as other related variables on the performance of aggregate export, agricultural materials, foods, and manufactures of Indonesia. The research used secondary data with time series between 2005 and 2013 and cross-section of the Indonesian export main target countries. The research used a gravity model with fixed-effect estimation methods. The results of the research showed that infrastructure and institutionalization as well as other related variables influenced the Indonesian export flows. Based on the findings mentioned above, in order to increase Indonesian export, it is important to improve the infrastructure and institutionalization performances that are related, firstly, to the capacity and quality of transportation infrastructure, especially roads and ports; secondly, to optimization of communication information technology, especially the use of e-marketing; thirdly, to increased quality of Indonesian governance, especially control of corruption, rule of law, regulatory quality and government effectiveness; and fourthly to acceleration of export duration and simplification of export permit document.  Furthermore, Indonesia needs to review its import tariff policy that applies to export target countries and also review whether it is necessary to improve domestic support. Keywords: export, gravity model, infrastructure, institutionalization

Abstract

Crude Palm Oil (CPO) is the biggest consumed vegetable oil in the world. The increase in CPO production raises concern on the environmental impact even outside the producing countries. As a response to this matter, the EU has made a requirement to only import certified CPO (CSPO). India and China, the two biggest importers in the world, are less restrictive to the environmental issues, and their demands are more influenced by CPO price levels. These countries are the main export markets for Indonesia and Malaysia, the two biggest CPO exporters in the world. This research using monthly price data from the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, EU28, India, China, Indonesia and Malaysia. Market integrations are tested with Cointegration Test, Vector Error Correction Model and Seemingly Unrelated Regression. The results show that these markets are integrated, but European countries are unlikely to lead the price movement. Therefore, the concern on sustainable certification from the European countries still slowly spreads to other main importers, resulting in low absorption of CSPO.
