Abstract

The issue of integrity and ethics in pastoral counseling services is a major concern in the contemporary church context. Various cases of ethical violations within the church environment highlight a gap in the application of moral and ethical values, which should serve as the foundation of pastoral ministry. Therefore, this study aims to explore how ethical values can be effectively integrated into pastoral counseling practices to create a more dignified and responsible church environment. This research employs a qualitative method with a literature review approach, analyzing various theological and academic sources related to pastoral ethics, church leadership, and counseling dynamics within the Christian community. The study also examines moral principles rooted in the Bible as the primary guideline for pastoral ministers in guiding congregants. The findings indicate that the integration of ethics in pastoral counseling heavily relies on a deep understanding of Christian moral principles and the strict application of ethical standards in interactions between church leaders and congregants. By emphasizing the character of Christ as the primary model in pastoral ministry, the church can develop counseling practices that are more effective, ethical, and aligned with Christian values.

Abstract

This study investigates the Mopat Asam ritual, a traditional practice of the Dayak Kebahant community in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. This ritual, conducted during pregnancy, aims to lift taboos and seek blessings for the mother and child. The research employs a qualitative approach, including in-depth interviews with key informants, document analysis, and direct observations in Desa Merah Arai. The study reveals the deep spiritual and social significance of the ritual, which aligns with various Christian principles. By analyzing the symbolic meanings and stages of Mopat Asam, the research explores its theological relevance and potential integration with Christian offering practices. The findings highlight how traditional values and religious practices can be harmonized, enriching the spiritual experiences of the Dayak Kebahant community. This integration fosters a deeper understanding of the sacredness of life and communal solidarity, bridging cultural traditions with Christian teachings.

Abstract

This research employs a qualitative research method with a literature review approach. The reinterpretation of the differences between the Law of Moses and the Ten Commandments is an effort to contribute to the discourse on the growing misconceptions about the Law, which significantly deviate from biblical truth. The Old and New Testaments speak of two distinct laws: the Law of Moses and the Ten Commandments of God. Unfortunately, many Christians are unaware of this truth, leading to misconceptions about the definition of the Law that do not align with the Word of God. Based on the research findings, these two "laws" exhibit significant differences: the Law of Moses was temporary, meaning its validity lasted only until the death of Jesus on the cross. In contrast, the Ten Commandments of God represent the Law of Love, given to His people as an eternal principle and standard of life. Thus, the existence of Christ and His Ten Commandments is the central foundation of both the Old and New Testaments. Therefore, the Bible must be comprehensively understood as a unified whole, possessing equal authority.

Abstract

This study aims to deepen the understanding of Zacchaeus' life transformation based on the narrative of Luke 19 in the context of everyday life. Using a descriptive qualitative research method, this study leads to an in-depth analysis of Zacchaeus' character, actions, and responses, including the social and moral context surrounding his work as a chief tax collector. This study analyzes the biblical text to gain an in-depth understanding of Zacchaeus' changes in attitude and behavior after interacting with Jesus. Through this approach, the study aims to highlight the impact of the encounter with Jesus on Zacchaeus' daily life, his repentance response, and how these changes affect his social interactions. One of the main aspects of Zacchaeus' repentance is restitution, namely the return of rights to those who have been harmed, which is a clear evidence of his moral and spiritual transformation. This study also links the principle of restitution in the story of Zacchaeus with its relevance to corruption cases in the modern era, emphasizing the importance of restoring justice as part of true repentance. The results of this study are expected to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of Zacchaeus' life transformation process, including internal and external changes, as well as its positive impact on his social environment. Thus, this study is not only a theological study, but also has practical relevance in the context of daily life and moral values. This study reflects the comprehensiveness and relevance in understanding the transformation of life based on the story of Zacchaeus' conversion in Luke 19, as well as its implications for the practice of restitution in various social contexts, including in cases of abuse of office and corruption.

Abstract

Throw-away culture is a living habit of modern society that views goods as having a relatively short period of use without any desire or effort to recycle or extend the period of use. In this culture, things are easily seen as useless, needing to be replaced by something else, the newest and most updated. This phenomenon received special attention from Pope Francis in his encyclicals, especially Laudato Si, which contains the Church’s Social Teaching, namely “preferential options for the poor”. This ‘disposable’ culture is one of the roots of the environmental crisis, which also has an impact on the social crisis. Why might the “disposable culture” have an impact on the social crisis? Through qualitative research using literature analysis techniques, researchers will answer this main question from the ethical perspective of Laudato Si through three main studies, namely Laudato Si, ‘disposable culture’, and the social crisis in modern society.

Abstract

This article explores the evolving concepts of sin and punishment through an interdisciplinary analysis rooted in theology and legal theory. It examines how theological traditions understand sin as a spiritual rupture and punishment as a path to restoration, while legal systems treat punishment as a rational mechanism to uphold justice and social order. The study traces the shifting boundaries between divine justice and secular law through historical and thematic analysis, revealing how moral responsibility, repentance, and mercy have been interpreted across various contexts—from ancient religious codes to Enlightenment jurisprudence. The article also analyzes contemporary ethical debates surrounding retributive and restorative punishment models. By integrating theological reflection with legal-historical insights, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how societies conceptualize wrongdoing and justice and advocates for more holistic approaches to moral and legal accountability.

Abstract

This study analyzes the role and position of women in the Makassar Bugis society and how the understanding of women's socio-cultural position can be an entry point for contextual gospel preaching. The results of the study show that Makassar Bugis women have a respectable position and a significant role in various aspects of life, including religious rituals, family decision-making, and the preservation of cultural values. This important role is rooted in traditional myths that are still firmly held today. The contextualization of the proclamation of the gospel can be done by utilizing women's strategic position in society, transforming their ritual role into ecclesiastical ministry, and developing an approach that respects local cultural values while affirming the truth of the Gospel.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the Biblical perspective on alcohol consumption and its implications for congregational development, focusing on the GKII Damai Tumbang Kaburai congregation in Central Kalimantan, which used the traditional alcoholic beverage Baram. Using a qualitative-descriptive method through Biblical review and interviews with local informants, the study found that the Bible gave clear warnings about the dangers of intoxicating alcohol, while also acknowledging the use of wine in cultural and health contexts when consumed with control and positive purpose. The findings emphasised that the congregation should prioritize God's word above cultural traditions that could be harmful, provide a life example in accordance with Christian teachings, and develop healthier, safer cultural alternatives. This study was expected to serve as a foundation for more effective congregational guidance in addressing social and spiritual challenges related to alcohol consumption.

Abstract

This study addressed the social and scientific importance of understanding pastors’ perceptions of “Mission Month” and its relationship to church mission movements, particularly within the GKII Central Java 1. The research aimed to analyse how pastors comprehend the significance of Mission Month and how this understanding influences the effectiveness of mission initiatives at the local church level. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through purposive sampling of eight ordained pastors with at least three years of service, employing unstructured and in-depth interviews as well as participatory observation. Results indicated that pastors perceived Mission Month as a strategic period to mobilise congregational participation in evangelism and mission, reinforcing commitment to the church’s vision. The effectiveness of Mission Month was closely linked to the pastors’ transformative leadership and managerial abilities.
