Abstract

The issue of salvation remains a central and foundational theme within Christian theology, maintaining its relevance across generations. Two principal pillars underpinning the construction of Christian soteriology are the doctrines of justification and substitution. The doctrine of justification asserts that sinful humanity is declared righteous before God solely through faith in Jesus Christ, independent of human works. Meanwhile, the doctrine of substitution posits that Christ offered Himself as a sacrificial substitute, bearing the penalty of sin on behalf of humankind. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method through a literature review approach, examining a wide range of theological sources, both classical and contemporary. The primary objective is to investigate thoroughly the biblical, historical, and rational foundations of these two doctrines as essential components of soteriology within the framework of systematic theology. The findings reveal that justification and substitution are not merely isolated theological concepts, but rather constitute an integrated whole in articulating God’s salvific work in Christ. Together, they offer a coherent and theologically robust response to the challenges posed by relativism and pluralism within the context of postmodern thought.

Abstract

Education plays an important role as the foundation of national development which is regulated by law. This research aims to examine the comparison of legal frameworks and education policies in Indonesia and Malaysia by focusing on the legal-formal approach. The method used is library research with a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were obtained through a search of the constitution, education laws, ministerial regulations, and national education policy documents from each country. The results show that Indonesia applies a decentralized system by giving great authority to local governments, which allows the integration of local values but also faces challenges of consistency and quality. Malaysia, with its centralized system under the Ministry of Education, allows for a more equitable standardization of education to remote areas. Based on Dr. Nazily's (2020) theory, the effectiveness of education policy is largely determined by strict legal norms, systematic implementation tools and continuous evaluation mechanisms. This analysis shows that Indonesia excels in flexibility and cultural relevance, while Malaysia excels in implementation efficiency and monitoring. This study is expected to provide solutions to improve the quality and equity of national education through learning from both systems.

Abstract

This article analyses the comparison of the education systems in Malaysia and Indonesia through an institutional approach, examining the theory and implementation of education in both countries. The study uses a library research approach with a descriptive qualitative methodology to interpret legal documents and educational policies from each country. The results of the comparison show that Indonesia has adopted a combination of centralised and decentralised systems, with centralised policies and relatively autonomous local implementation. Indonesia has implemented the Merdeka Curriculum, which focuses on developing character, creativity, and competencies through project-based learning, although it still faces challenges such as a shortage of teachers and disparities in teacher welfare. Conversely, Malaysia has implemented decentralisation, giving regions a relatively high degree of autonomy while maintaining coordination with the central government, with a curriculum that emphasises holistic individual development (JERIS) and is relatively stable. The Malaysian government also pays close attention to teacher well-being and learning innovation, supported by substantial education funding. In terms of curriculum development, the principles of Ralph Tyler's model, which include setting goals, selecting learning experiences, organising them, and evaluating them, are implemented in the education systems of both countries. This comparison highlights the need for policies to be adapted to the local context, as well as the importance of government support in terms of funding and teacher welfare to achieve national education goals comprehensively.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of ecotheological values in the patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) farming practices of the GMIM Kanaan Karowa congregation in the Tompasobaru I region. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, field observations, and church document analysis. The findings reveal a significant gap between the congregation’s strong theological awareness regarding the responsibility to care for creation and the reality of environmentally unfriendly agricultural practices. The community remains dependent on chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and wood-fuelled distillation methods that pose ecological risks. The church’s role is still confined to doctrinal teaching, lacking structured ecological action. Therefore, the church must take a leading role in integrating faith with ecological engagement to promote sustainable agriculture in harmony with Christian belief and the integrity of creation.

Abstract

This study investigates the integration of pastoral ministry and secular work through a theological-exegetical inquiry into the Apostle Paul’s model in 1 and 2 Thessalonians, with a particular focus on bivocational pastors in Minahasa, Indonesia. The research is motivated by growing tensions within local churches where pastors are compelled to engage in secular employment due to economic necessity, raising theological and ethical questions about the legitimacy of such practices. The aim of this study is to examine whether bivocational ministry, as practiced by many Minahasan pastors, aligns with Paul’s vision of responsible, self-sustaining spiritual leadership. Using a qualitative approach that combines exegetical analysis of key biblical texts (1 Thess. 2:9 and 2 Thess. 3:6–12) with field data collected from interviews and observations involving ten pastors across multiple denominations, the study provides a contextual reading of Paul’s ethic of labor and ministry. The findings reveal that 70% of participants engage in additional work such as farming, teaching, or trading—not as a distraction from their calling, but as an intentional way to embody their faith in daily life. Rather than compromising their pastoral identity, this practice expands their relational influence and moral credibility in the community. This research concludes that bivocational ministry, when carried out with theological awareness and pastoral integrity, is a valid and contextually faithful expression of Christian vocation. The study affirms the need for a flexible theological paradigm that acknowledges diverse models of ministry, while calling on churches to support their pastors according to their capacity and context.

Abstract

This article explores the relevance of Søren Kierkegaard’s concept of private theology in addressing the ecological crisis within the congregation of GMIBM Sion Tonom. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach and theological reflection, the study finds that a personal, existential spirituality has the capacity to foster authentic and contextually grounded ecological engagement. Notions such as the leap of faith and the teleological suspension of the ethical demonstrate that personal faith can transcend prevailing social norms in pursuit of divine obedience. Amidst the structural limitations of the institutional Church, private theology emerges as a participatory and transformative spiritual foundation, enabling the development of grassroots ecotheological movements. A faith lived intimately becomes a source of moral courage for acting towards the integrity of creation.

Abstract

This study explores students’ reception of La Parure, an ironic short story by Guy de Maupassant, focusing on how they interpret its themes, characters, and moral messages. Employing a reception theory framework, the research analyses responses from students with diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and textual analysis to understand how readers perceive the story’s critique of social class, materialism, and the consequences of appearances. Findings reveal varying receptions based on cultural and temporal contexts. Students often empathize with the protagonist, Mathilde Loisel, while simultaneously critiquing her obsession with social status. The study also highlights the relevance of La Parure in modern contexts, particularly in addressing materialism and the pursuit of superficial appearances, akin to contemporary phenomena like social media lifestyles. Additionally, the analysis examines students’ perceptions of adaptations of La Parure into films and graphic novels, revealing how different media influence their understanding of the story's irony and moral lessons.
