Abstract

The Bahoi coastal area has long been used for various economic activities, such as recreational locations or marine tourism. In addition, the Bahoi coastal community also carries out a lot of activities in the seagrass ecosystem, if these activities are carried out continuously it will have a negative impact on the sustainability of the seagrass ecosystem as a habitat for various types of aquatic biota such as fish. This study aims to determine the composition of fish species and the ecology of seagrass ecosystems in Bahoi coastal waters, West Likupang District, North Sulawesi. The results of the composition of fish species found in Bahoi waters consist of fish families and genera found in seagrass ecosystems consisting of 15 namely Siganidae, Plostosidae, Pomacentridae, Labridae, Clupeidae, Apogonidae, Carangidae, Lutjanidae, Nemipteridae, Balistidae, Athenomoridae, Achanturidae, Scaridae, Zanclidae, and Tetraodontidae. The highest fish species composition was shown by the Pomacentridae family, namely 57.2% and Siganidae 44.9%. The results of measuring the value of the community structure obtained show that seagrass ecosystems in coastal Bahoi waters have a fish community structure in a stable condition. The types of seagrass found varied, consisting of 6 species with mixed vegetation. The highest seagrass density and the cover was shown by the large seagrass species, namely Enhalus acoroides and Thalassia hemprichii. Overall, seagrass cover in Bahoi waters is classified as a very rich seagrass cover. Dominance index of fish species in Bahoi coastal waters is dominated by the families Pomacentridae and Siganidae.

Abstract

Sentani Lake in Papua Province is a significant ecosystem with multiple functions as ecological, economic, tourism, and transportation purposes. Unfortunately, the lake has been subject to pollution and damage due to human activities which degrade the riparian and water catchment areas, declining the endemic fauna. Settlements, transportation, agriculture, mining, and floating net cage cultivation (KJA) for fishery purposes also contribute to the decrease in water quality. In this study, in-site and ex-site water analysis was performed to assess the water quality and pollution status of Sentani Lake. The pollution index (IP) was used as the parameter of water quality status and pollution level. Some parameters were assessed: temperature (30.4 oC – 33.3 oC), total suspended solids (TSS) (70 – 89 mg/l), clarity (1 m - 5.2 m), pH (8.36 - 8.48), dissolved oxygen (DO) (5.74 mg/l – 6.43 mg/l), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) (0.21 mg/l - 2.11 mg/l), chemical oxygen demand (COD) (20.0 mg/l - 30.0 mg/l), phosphate (0.36 mg/l – 1.54 mg/l), and nitrogen (0.47 mg/l – 0.98 mg/l). During the day, the temperature ranged from 31.0 oC – 32.0 oC, TSS (72 – 93 mg/l), clarity (1.2 m - 4.5 m), pH (8.28 – 8.40), DO (6.21 mg/l – 6.82 mg/l), BOD (1.01 mg/l – 2.62 mg/l), COD (20.0 mg/l – 35.0 mg/l), phosphate (0.21 mg/l – 1.22 mg/l), and nitrogen (0.48 mg/l – 0.87 mg/l). Overall, the water quality was moderately polluted, with IP values ranging from 6.373 to 8.605 in the morning and from 5.553 to 7.946 in the afternoon.

Abstract

Coral transplantation is a method of planting and growing a coral colony using the fragmentation method with the aim of accelerating the regeneration of damaged coral reefs, or as a way to improve the coral reef ecosystem. The aim of this research is to determine the abundance and diversity of coral fish in the transplant area which was carried out by the Center for Marine Resources and Fisheries Studies in collaboration with PT. PLN (Persero) Main Unit for Papua and West Papua Regions on Harlem Beach, Tablasufa Village. Data collection on reef fish was carried out using the underwater visual census method. The abundance of reef fish analyzed was a group of major fish, indicator fish and target fish, and the Diversity Index used Shannon-Wiener. Based on the research results, there were 437 reef fish found in monitoring I and 589 reef fish in monitoring II with a total of 35 species from 10 families dominated by major fish groups, namely around 82.52-88.56%, and target fish. which is around 10.98-17.15%. The highest abundance of individual reef fish was found in Monitoring II. This shows that the number of reef fish presence is increasing. On the one hand, higher diversity was found in monitoring I, namely 2.00 than monitoring II, namely 1.90. Based on the Shannon-Wiener category, the diversity index is categorized as moderate. This diversity index is thought to be because transplantation has not been effective in functioning as a habitat for reef fish, as indicated by the very low presence of indicator fish, namely only around 0.34-0.46%. The research results show that coral transplantation has had a positive impact on improving reef fish habitat and coral reef ecosystems.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify changes in net geometry and analyze the correlation between the physical properties of the net and the geometry of the net that has been used for 1 to 3 years. The research used an experimental method by directly measuring the geometry of the net, namely mesh size, net diameter and knot height. The research also analyzed data on breaking strength and net elongation which were correlated with net geometry. The condition of the net when tested was dry. There were 4 treatments used in the research, namely control nets, nets that had been used by fishermen for 1, 2 and 3 years. The results of the research stated that the highest average gillnet mesh size value was for the 2 year net treatment and the lowest was 3 years. The highest average value of net diameter was the 1 year net and the lowest was the 2 year net. Meanwhile, the highest average gillnet node height is 1 year and the lowest is 3 years. The correlation value of net geometry with breaking strength has varying values. Breaking strength is closely related to the height of the knots in the mesh with a positive value of 0.77, whereas for mesh elongation all the mesh geometry indicators have negative values, so each increase in the mesh geometry value will decrease the elongation value.
