Abstract

This study investigates parents’ perceptions of Native English Teachers (NETs) and Local English Teachers (LETs) who teach young learners aged 3 to 12 at a private English language institution across the Jabotabek region of Indonesia. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, the study analyzed secondary survey data from 504 parents and conducted semi-structured interviews with 11 purposively selected participants. The quantitative findings revealed that 83.9% of respondents considered NETs important for their children's English education, with increased learner motivation (62.2%) and improved speaking proficiency (56.5%) identified as the primary reasons. Qualitative findings indicated that parents associated NETs with stronger linguistic competence while recognizing LETs for their pedagogical strengths, including effective instructional scaffolding, cultural understanding, and age-appropriate classroom management. The study identified personal experience, institutional marketing practices, and the ideology of native-speakerism as key sociocultural factors shaping parental preferences. A notable contradiction emerged regarding first-language use: although parents valued LETs' ability to use Bahasa Indonesia to clarify difficult concepts, they also perceived this practice as reducing learners' exposure to English. Overall, the findings suggest that parental preferences reflect a complex interaction among linguistic bias, perceived motivational value, and sociocultural influences, with native-speakerism remaining a dominant, yet nuanced, factor in Indonesia's private English as a Foreign Language (EFL) sector.

Abstract

Launched in 2024, Bank XYZ's mobile banking application experienced an increase in active users, necessitating adjustments to its appearance to reflect user needs and trends. Although no negative feedback was found in the Play Store or App Store, analysis of system log data indicated features that were underutilized and transaction flows were inefficient. Furthermore, internal user feedback indicated that some menus were still not fully user-friendly. Research on mobile banking application interface redesign generally focuses on qualitative approaches based on observation and interviews, which are limited by their subjective nature and do not fully represent actual user behavior. Therefore, this study examines the redesign of Bank XYZ's mobile banking user interface by incorporating system log data analysis. This research aims to identify barriers and formulate solutions for improving the mobile banking application to increase usability and optimize the user experience through a Design Thinking approach. The method used combines interviews with active users and system log data analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding. The use of system log data complements observation and interview data with actual user behavior data, hopefully resulting in more objective and effective interface redesign recommendations. The results of the study showed that integrating user interviews with system log data was able to identify root causes that were not visible with a qualitative approach alone. The redesign resulted in a simplified transaction flow, repositioning menus based on frequency of use, the addition of a Quick Access feature, balance information on the transaction page, a copy account number feature, increased PIN input responsiveness, and improved application navigation. Test results from the second iteration showed increased transaction completion efficiency, decreased PIN input time, ease of finding key features, and an improved user experience compared to the previous design.

Abstract

The phenomenon of floods loaded with mud sediment due to rainfall and massive mining activities upstream are a serious threat to settlements in RT. 28, Loa Janan Ulu Village, Kutai Kartanegara.  Therefore, this study aims to formulate a strategy for designing adaptive residential houses that are resilient to sediment-laden floods, as a practical guide for the community and a reference for technical standards for policy makers. The research framework combined social behaviour theories such as the tendency to stay at home (In-situ Coping) and Place Attachment with an Adaptive Architecture approach that includes the concept of Living with Water, vertical zoning arrangements, and material resilience (Material Recoverability). The research was applied through four systematic stages: (1) identification of natural traces and flood impacts to determine the parameters of critical elevation of floods (Hmax) and sediment types; (2) mapping of residents' adaptation behaviour patterns independently; (3) architectural synthesis using adaptability matrix; and (4) formulation of final design strategies. The results of the study show that the relevant adaptive design strategy is to revitalize the local wisdom of the vernacular architecture of Rumah Kutai through three main technical principles: the application of strict vertical zoning to separate the Wet Zone in the lower area and the Dry Zone on the upper floor; the use of low-porosity washable materials such as hydrophobic exposed concrete and WPC composites; and the application of a hybrid stage structure that allows water to flow freely under the building to reduce hydrodynamic pressure loads.

Abstract

Workplace accidents in the mining industry remain a critical global concern due to their impact on worker safety and operational efficiency. A major coal mining company in Indonesia, experienced an increasing number of accidents from 2022 to 2024, despite implementing a five-layer Safe Work System (SBS). This study aims to analyze the causes of these accidents using the Swiss Cheese Model to identify systemic weaknesses across organizational, planning, operational, technological, and contact defense layers. A qualitative case study approach was employed, complemented by descriptive statistical analysis of 2,413 findings from 435 accident reports. Each incident was mapped to the five SBS layers to determine frequency, contribution, and interactions among failures. The results indicate that Layer III (Work Readiness & Monitoring) was the dominant contributor (45.67%), followed by Layers II (Plan Readiness) and I (Organization Roles & Responsibility), highlighting operational deviations influenced by latent managerial and planning weaknesses. Layers IV (Preventive Defense) and V (Contact Defense) played supporting roles, emphasizing the importance of technology and emergency preparedness. The study concludes that accidents are systemic, resulting from alignment failures across multiple defense layers. Strengthening organizational policies, risk-based planning, operational monitoring, and technology integration is essential to improve safety maturity. Future research should explore the application of predictive safety analytics and multi-site comparisons to enhance proactive accident prevention in mining operations.

Abstract

The appointment of Thomas Djiwandono as Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia attracted significant media attention due to his familial connection with President Prabowo Subianto and the implications for institutional independence. This study aims to analyze how major Indonesian online media Tempo.com, Detik.com, and Kompas.com framed the appointment and constructed social reality through news reporting. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using framing analysis based on Pan and Kosicki's model. Six news articles published in January 2026 were selected according to predetermined criteria, and data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Results indicate distinct framing strategies across media outlets. During the candidacy phase, Tempo.com emphasized political relations, Detik.com focused on administrative procedures, and Kompas.com highlighted legitimacy and support. In the ratification phase, all media shifted focus toward independence, professionalism, and institutional legitimacy, reflecting editorial differences and framing dynamics. The findings demonstrate that online media not only report facts but actively shape public perception through the selection of headlines, sources, diction, and visuals. This study concludes that media framing plays a crucial role in constructing social reality, emphasizing the need for critical public media consumption. Future research should expand media scope and employ quantitative approaches to evaluate the effects of framing on public opinion.

Abstract

The cost of capital is an important aspect of a company's financial decision-making because it reflects the rate of return required by investors and creditors to compensate for the risks they undertake. In the context of increasing attention to sustainability issues, environmental disclosure has emerged as a non-financial factor that may influence investors' risk perceptions and, consequently, the cost of capital. This study aims to examine the effect of environmental disclosure—voluntary disclosure based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and mandatory disclosure under SEOJK No. 16/SEOJK.04/2021—on the cost of capital of environmentally sensitive industrial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The study used secondary data obtained from annual reports and sustainability reports and employed a quantitative correlational research design. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression based on 99 company-year observations. The sample was selected using a combination of quota sampling and purposive sampling. The results showed that voluntary environmental disclosure had a positive and statistically significant effect on the cost of capital, whereas mandatory environmental disclosure had a positive but statistically insignificant effect. Firm size had a negative but statistically insignificant effect on the cost of capital. These findings indicate the existence of a trade-off in environmental disclosure, whereby greater transparency does not necessarily reduce the cost of capital unless it is accompanied by credibility and the expectation of long-term economic benefits.

Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has transformed digital communication patterns and created new challenges related to language misuse, including expressions that potentially constitute financial and reputational crimes in the public sphere. The misuse of language in social media discussions regarding government policies and programs may influence public perceptions, spread misleading information, and trigger conflicts among communities. This study aims to identify and analyze forms of language crimes found on social media within the context of financial and policy-related discussions of the elected Government of the Republic of Indonesia in 2024 through a forensic linguistics perspective. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using forensic semantic and forensic pragmatic approaches. Data were collected through observation, documentation, reading, and note-taking techniques from social media posts and comments on platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and X (Twitter). Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that language crimes occurring on social media include slander, insults, and defamation expressed through negative labeling, accusations, and degrading statements. Forensic semantic analysis reveals the use of lexical and connotative meanings aimed at damaging the image and credibility of individuals or groups, while forensic pragmatic analysis identifies expressive speech acts intended to influence public opinion. The study concludes that social media language abuse requires careful contextual interpretation and legal awareness because not all negative expressions represent crimes without considering communicative intent, factual basis, and social impact.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has developed rapidly and is increasingly integrated into various sectors, including public administration, finance, and digital platforms. However, the expansion of AI technologies also presents significant legal and regulatory challenges, particularly in developing legal systems where regulatory frameworks remain limited. This study examined AI regulation in Indonesia and China through a comparative legal analysis using a normative legal research method that analyzed legislation, policy documents, and academic literature related to AI governance. The findings indicated that Indonesia currently adopts a fragmented and policy-based regulatory approach, whereas China has established a more comprehensive and enforceable regulatory framework governing algorithmic systems and emerging AI technologies. The study also identified several regulatory gaps in Indonesia, including the absence of specific AI legislation, limited institutional coordination, and inadequate mechanisms for algorithmic accountability. Therefore, this research argues that Indonesia needs to develop a comprehensive and enforceable AI regulatory framework that integrates legal certainty, risk-based governance, and institutional coordination by drawing lessons from China’s regulatory experience while considering Indonesia’s legal and institutional context.
