Abstract

This study intends to compare the use of two artificial intelligence-based applications, namely Photomath and ChatGPT-4o, in supporting fraction learning for mathematics education students. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological study design. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and observations of three active second-semester students from a private university in Gorontalo Province who have used both applications in independent learning activities. The results indicate that Photomath is effective in providing fast and automatic solutions with systematic steps, but it is less in-depth in explaining mathematical concepts and does not present alternative solutions. In contrast, ChatGPT-4o is able to provide in-depth conceptual explanations, invite users to understand the logic behind each stage of the solution, and offer various approaches to solving problems, although the interactive process is slower. These findings indicate that Photomath is more suitable for quick practice, while ChatGPT-4o is ideal for conceptual learning and interactive discussions. This study has implications for the use of AI technology in mathematics learning and serves as a foundation for the development of more adaptive and effective digital-based teaching strategies.

Abstract

The affective filter hypothesis is critical to comprehending how emotions impact language learning, yet limited research exists on its correlation to other languages, specifically to Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) students studying Spanish as a foreign language. This study was to investigate the affective filter levels of BSED students from different majors and examine how their perceptions of classroom-related factors influence their language learning experiences. Using a quantitative, descriptive-comparative design and proportional stratified sampling, data were collected via an adapted version of Robert C. Gardner’s Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB), administered both online and in print. The results revealed that English and Values Education majors reported higher levels of affective filter, while Filipino majors exhibited lower levels, indicating that emotional barriers vary across different fields of specialization. Furthermore, there was strong agreement among students regarding the positive impact of classroom dynamics—such as teaching style, peer interaction, and the learning environment—on reducing emotional barriers and enhancing motivation. These findings emphasize the importance of teachers creating emotionally supportive learning environments that could help lower the affective filter and nurture better language learning outcomes. With these, further research involving more diverse student populations that focuses more on individual experiences and exploring additional foreign languages is recommended.

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship among mother tongue (Urhobo language), socio-economic status, and the academic performance of social studies students in upper basic schools in Delta State. The study focused on one independent variable, mother tongue (Urhobo language instruction), while academic performance was the dependent variable, and socioeconomic status was adopted as a moderating variable. A quasi-experimental pre-test post-test control group design was the research design. The population comprised 80,912 Upper Basic 8 Social Studies students in Delta State during the 2023/2024 academic session. A sample of 100 students was selected using multistage, purposive, and random sampling techniques. One school was used as the experimental group, receiving instructions in the Urhobo language, while the control group was taught in the English language. Data was collected using a Social Studies Mother Tongue Test (SSMTT), which had a reliability coefficient of 0.89. Research questions were answered using descriptive statistics, while hypotheses were tested using a t-test at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that students taught social studies with their mother tongue performed significantly better than those taught with English, demonstrating that mother-tongue instruction enhances comprehension, retention, and engagement. Additionally, socio-economic status did not moderate the relationship between mother tongue and academic performance of students, suggesting that language familiarity is more influential than financial status. The study recommended policy initiatives, promoting indigenous language instruction, and increased parental support for mother-tongue learning. These findings contribute to educational research by reinforcing the cognitive advantages of using mother tongue for teaching and its potential for improving learning outcomes across socioeconomic groups.

Abstract

The role of conceptual understanding is essential because it enables students to more easily comprehend and learn mathematics. Therefore, this study focuses on the impact of the Discovery Learning model on the mathematical concept comprehension of students at a public middle school. The research employed an experimental method with a posttest-only control group design. The study's population included all eighth-grade students at public middle school 8 Gorontalo. The sample consisted of class VIII-5 as the experimental group, which implemented discovery learning, and class VIII-3 as the control group, which used a direct instruction learning model. Data was collected through an essay test administered as a post-test at the end of the study. Data analysis was performed descriptively and inferentially using a t-test. The results of the t-test indicated a t-calculated value of 3.506 and a t-table value of 1.6779, confirming that the t-calculated value is greater than the t-table value. Thus, it can be concluded that the Discovery Learning model has a significant influence on the mathematical concept comprehension of eighth-grade students at public middle school 8 in Gorontalo.

Abstract

High turnover of early childhood education teachers is a challenge to the quality of education. This situation compels leaders to focus on retaining teachers to ensure the sustainability of early childhood education institutions. This study aims to determine the factors that influence the turnover and retention rates of early childhood education teachers in the Magelang Region. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method through a survey approach. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to early childhood education respondents in the Magelang Region using a simple random sampling technique. This study was analyzed using descriptive analysis, namely analyzing the average, number, and percentage. The results of the study indicate that the factors that influence the rate of teacher turnover are the work environment, suitability to work, culture, and community; compensation and benefits; leadership; work management system; and mentoring and support from colleagues. These findings suggest that school policies should focus on specific factors in the teachers' work environment by creating a fun, calming, and prosperous atmosphere to help reduce the impact of high teacher turnover and improve retention in early childhood education.

Abstract

The background of this study is based on the importance of mastering shooting skills in futsal games, especially at the elementary school level, as well as the need for effective training methods to improve these abilities. This study aims to determine the effect of tactical approaches and drilling methods on the shooting abilities of elementary school futsal extracurricular participants. This study uses a quantitative approach with an experimental method and a two-group pretest-posttest design. The sample in the study amounted to 28 students who actively participate in futsal extracurricular activities at elementary school Parang Tambung II Makassar City. The sampling technique used the total sampling method and then divided into two groups: the tactical approach group and the drilling method group. The research instrument used was a shooting accuracy test from Maulana (2009), which has been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was carried out using a t-test with a significance level of 0.05. The results of the study showed that (1) there is a significant influence of the tactical approach on shooting ability (p < 0.05); (2) there is a significant influence of the drilling method on shooting ability (p < 0.05); and (3) there is a significant difference in the influence between the tactical approach and the drilling method on shooting ability (p = 0.002 < 0.05). The group with the tactical approach showed a higher increase in shooting ability than the drilling method group, with an average difference of 3.50 points.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with the help of the GeoGebra application to increase students' learning motivation for geometric transformation material, especially translation. This study is a form of classroom action research carried out in two cycles in class XI E of High School 4 Palu involving 35 students. Each cycle consists of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection steps. In cycle I, the material is related to translation to points, while in cycle II, it is related to translation to lines. Data were collected through a learning motivation questionnaire and observation sheets, which were analyzed descriptively. The results indicated that students' learning motivation increased from cycle I to cycle II. In cycle I, only 6 students (17.1%) were included in the strong motivation category, while 11 students (31.5%) were included in the low category. After the improvement in Cycle II, the number of highly motivated students increased to 15 (42.8%), while those in the low group decreased to only 2 (5.8%). Observational data shows increased student engagement and enjoyment in learning. Consequently, the implementation of the GeoGebra-assisted PBL paradigm has proven successful in increasing motivation in mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' learning motivation through the application of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) learning model with the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach on reflection material. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was carried out in two cycles in class XI.G of High School 4 Palu, with 35 students participating. The main instrument used in this study was a learning motivation questionnaire consisting of five indicators: interest in learning, enthusiasm for learning, responsibility, sincerity in responding to teacher questions, and reactions to stimuli given by the teacher. The results of the study showed an increase in students' learning motivation after the application of the PBL model with the TaRL technique. In Cycle I, the learning motivation of the majority of students was still in the low (57.14%) and moderate (42.86%) categories, with an average motivation score of 47. After the observed improvement in Cycle II, a significant increase occurred, with 54.29% of students reaching the strong motivation category and 45.71% in the moderate category, while the average score increased to 68. The findings indicate that the combination of the PBL model with the TaRL method effectively increases students' learning motivation, particularly through grouping techniques based on cognitive ability levels. Consequently, education tailored to students' needs and abilities can foster a more significant and inspiring learning experience.

Abstract

This research is driven by students' poor math comprehension. The lack of student activity and boredom in math causes this. Despite trying many learning strategies, educators have not been able to maximize math understanding. Researchers use the Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) cooperative learning paradigm to solve the problem. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Team-Assisted Individualization (TAI) cooperative learning model assisted by Wordwall media on the understanding of mathematical concepts among elementary school students. The method used is quantitative with a quasi-experimental approach and a pretest-posttest control group design. The research subjects were fourth-grade students from two classes at Elementary School 1 Langkapura, with class A serving as the experimental group and class B as the control group. The instrument used was a test in the form of essay questions in the form of a posttest to measure the ability to understand mathematical concepts. The results of the study obtained a calculated value of t > ttable = 3.77 > 2.01 = 0.05, so that Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted. It can be concluded that there is an influence of the Team Assisted Individualization Cooperative learning model on the understanding of mathematical concepts in grade IV. Understanding concepts in mathematics subjects using the Team Assisted Individualization Cooperative learning model has an effect compared to understanding mathematical concepts using the Direct Instruction learning model of the Explicit Instruction type.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of principals in increasing teacher awareness regarding the implementation of Merdeka Belajar (Freedom to Learn). Based on the educational transformation towards autonomous learning, this study analyzed successful leadership strategies. The results of a combination of quantitative (survey) and qualitative (interview, observation) methods indicate that professional support, principal capacity building, and transformational leadership significantly improved teacher understanding and commitment. Principals successfully transformed teachers' roles into facilitators by serving as role models, inspiring, stimulating intellectually, and providing individualized attention. They also facilitated workshops and coaching. This research contributes to the development of educational leadership and pedagogical models and provides practical suggestions for teacher and principal development programs that support an adaptive, science-and-technology-based education ecosystem.
