Abstract

Gender representation in English textbooks has been an issue for a long period of time; it is important to monitor and assess the evolution of English textbooks regularly. This research examined how gender representation is presented in Merdeka curriculum-mandated English textbooks since there are gender imbalances and gender misconceptions in previous mandated English textbooks. Gender-related references used in the textbooks are analyzed using the Corpus tool and then measured to see how each gender is represented. Textbook analysis is important since they deliver values and could impact student’s perception of gender. This research intended to examine gender-related references and characteristics, therefore, corpus tools such as KWIC, plot, cluster, word, and collocate are used. This research found five categories of gender-related references in these textbooks: famous names, fictional names, ordinary names, generic nouns, and pronouns. Moreover, it is found that the Merdeka curriculum English textbooks did not present equal gender representation where male references are underrepresented and portrayed to only possess two emotions, happy and sad. Yet, female references dominated the presentation and portrayed as independent individuals who experienced lots of emotions such as furious, falling in love, ashamed, and other emotional attributes. Hence, the imbalance representation in textbooks should be revisited and should be based on more various natures of human emotions and roles.

Abstract

Although gender representation in Arabic textbooks has been extensively documented, little is known about it from the perspective of local textbooks. To fill this void, the present study aims to examine gender representation in Arabic textbooks at one of the most prominent Islamic Boarding Schools in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study uses a case study research design and Choiroh and Taufiq's theory (2020) to analyze data. The research findings revealed that the gender representation in that textbook encompasses stereotypes, subordination, marginalization, and double burden in the themes of time, sports professions, and patient clinics. The factors behind the emergence of gender representation were classified into internal and external factors. Internal factor is caused by being written by a female Arabic teacher, while external factor includes patriarchal culture. This research implies that teachers or instructors in Islamic boarding schools need training or workshops to discuss gender equality so that stereotyping, marginalization, and the double burden that disadvantages women can be considered and avoided.

Abstract

This research discusses the subject testing tools in the Banjar language. Subjecthood is one of the study materials within the scope of syntax. This research examines subject forms in the Banjar language using typological studies. Linguistic typology is one of the linguistic study theories and models founded on natural data and language structure systems. This research is descriptive qualitative research. This research data are clauses and sentences obtained in the direct speech of Banjar speakers. Respondents are Banjar individuals at least 18 years of age. They have a variety of genders, levels of education, native languages (L1), and places of residence. The study of the subjectivity of the Banjar language entails collecting data via multiple methods (observation and interview). The analysis method used in this research is the distributional method, followed by the advanced method. The result of this research states that the subjugation of the Banjar language follows the typology theory of subject testing. There are five types of subject testing tools applied in this research: canonical structure, relativization, control, adverbial insertion and reflexive. The use of typology theory can reveal the subject test tools.

Abstract

The research analyzes 20 songs in Midnights (3 a.m. version), a record-breaking album by Taylor Swift using Halliday’s transitivity framework and Simpson’s stylistic approach to the lyrics that are regarded as a form of verbal play. The objective is to prove that the transitivity choice is stylized for supporting the theme building of songs in Taylor Swift’s Midnights album. The transitivity analysis is taken as the tool to reveal the mind style impregnated in the lyric texts. Three dominant types of processes found are the human experience of the external world (material 41,09%), the internal world of consciousness (mental 16,89%), and the identification and classification to relate one aspect of the experience to another (relational 29,11%). These three dominant proccesses build the ideational meaning of the music album which reflects the songwriter’s view of the world. The songs are found to be taking four subjects of experience which are being in love, being in a bitter relationship, facing self-contempt, and scheming revenge. Such construe of the world is represented by the transitivity processes found in song lyrics enunciating one’s outlook on reality through song lyrics. The findings of the result are contributive to English learners who have an interest in examining texts of popular culture.

Abstract

This qualitative research investigates the utilization of cohesive devices in report writing among English Department students. The study delves into the application of grammatical and lexical cohesive devices in the students' report writing that is connected to the students’ ability in promoting the cultural values they have to report. The research employed a comprehensive approach, including the observation on the students’ field study and interview, as well as content analysis to gain deeper contextual insights into language usage and the contribution of authentic activities prior to report writing on environmental and cultural issues. The findings demonstrate the most frequently used devices are "Reference" and "Conjunction" as primary grammatical cohesive devices, while "Ellipsis" and "Substitution" were underutilized. Of all lexical cohesive devices, "Repetition" occurred dominantly, with "Antonyms," "Synonyms," "Hyponyms," and "Meronyms" were less frequently used. In line with the use of cohesive devices in report writing, the study also emphasized how cohesive devices facilitate English department students in conveying cultural values in their report texts through the integration of field study and authentic experiences. By incorporating real-world applications and deeper learning experiences outside the classroom, aligned with the principles of Independent Learning, Independent Campus ‘Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka’ (MBKM) in Indonesia, academic institutions can foster students' language development and competence in report writing.

Abstract

The digitalization era considers the media an urgent influencer for various aspects of life. The media's perspective also shapes perspectives and even influences decision-making for the community. Every media has an ideology. Framing analysis is intended to dissect the ideology of the media when constructing facts. On the other hand, the spread of digital media has impacted the ease of publication of literary writings as a factual form of self-expression. Poem as a type of literature has always been popularly chosen by the public because it contains both freedom and aesthetics. This study aims to describe the framing of the Kanjuruhan tragedy-themed poem in the Jawa Pos digital media from ontology, epistemology, and axiology perspectives. This type of research is qualitative. Data analysis descriptively positioned the researcher as the main research instrument. The data collection method uses basic tapping techniques and advanced techniques in the form of notes. The analytical procedure to determine framing is done by reading the poem carefully, analyzing the framing of the poem according to Entman's approach, and summarizing the findings. The results of framing research using an Entman’s approach seen from the depth of the perspective of ontology, epistemology, and axiology show that the poem published by Jawa Pos contains the sharpness of criticism and reflection by raising solidarity on the issue of humanism which indicates the alignment of creators to victims and criticizing state institutions and those in power. These findings add to the diversity of framing research using the Entman approach with new objects in the form of literary works. These results also indicate that framing analysis can clarify the ideology of a media in terms of everything it publishes.

Abstract

Epistemic beliefs of English language learning (EFL) learners are one of the factors that have increased awareness among people due to their pivotal role in influencing students' success and learning strategies and behaviors. The current study aims to compare the two variables above and thus investigate EFL university students' psychological well-being across different levels of Epistemic Beliefs. This quantitative study uses an independent sample T-test to determine the mean difference between two independent groups, which are the psychological well-being (henceforth, PWB) and epistemic beliefs of EFL students. The data was gathered by delivering online questionnaires via Google Forms to 96 students from a reputable university in East Java, Indonesia, majoring in English language education. The results indicate that there is no difference in the psychological and emotional well-being of students in the study area among different levels of epistemic beliefs (i.e., sophisticated and simple). According to the findings, investigating students' epistemic beliefs can provide insights into their educational engagement and well-being when studying. It is found that the PWB of different epistemic beliefs of Indonesian EFL learners is not that significant, and it is implied that epistemic beliefs are a spectrum that can be influenced by other aspects, such as cultural facets.

Abstract

In EFL writing, the interplay of Verbal linguistic intelligence and self-directed learning, influenced by grit, is crucial for enhancing proficiency. This research aims to explore the intricate relationship between linguistic intelligence, independent learning, and the pivotal role of grit. A cross-sectional design was instituted, encompassing 228 participants, aged 20-25, from a renowned private university in Malang, Indonesia. The Grit Scale by Duckworth et al. (2007) gauged participants' perseverance, while tools grounded in Hayes and Flower's paradigms assessed self-directed Learning. Verbal-linguistic Intelligence was appraised using the MIDAS tool. The findings illuminate the intricate dynamics of Verbal linguistics lntelligence, self-directed learning, and grit in academic writing. Verbal Intelligence strongly correlated with the constructs, underscoring its cardinal role in academic writing and analytical capabilities. Grit emerged as a crucial mediator between Self-Directed Learning, Verbal Intelligence, and writing problem-solving strategies, presenting a promising avenue for targeted pedagogical interventions. This investigation bolsters the foundation of resilient educational assessment tools and magnifies the transformative potential of grit and linguistic prowess in sharpening analytical abilities. Further studies should expound upon these relationships across diverse landscapes, remaining mindful of inherent biases. Abstract

The current study aims to glocalize the Jonglish community by comparing the pitch and intensity of the accents of native English speakers and Javanese speakers. Thirty-two university students whose first language was Javanese, coming from seven different regencies in Central Java, became the respondents. They are all first-semester students from various Java Island regencies, ranging in age from 19 to 21. The research instrument comprised an oral test of 10 academic vocabulary words and 5 phrases or sentences. Using PRAAT software, the oral test result is examined for the pitch and volume of the sound. The data show each respondent's and native speaker’s average, lowest, and maximum pitch and intensity. The average pitch of the respondents increased by 127.57 Hz, whereas a natural speaker’s pitch is 198.25 Hz. The average Javanese accent's intensity was measured at 65.11 decibels, while a native English speaker's accent was measured at 70.85 decibels. According to the results, there is no discernible difference between the native English speaker and the Javanese accent in terms of pitch or intensity. Even if there are imperfections in individual sounds, listeners may still understand and perceive speech as fluent as long as the prosodic features are well-executed. Consequently, it is acceptable to speak English with a Jonglish accent. Additionally, it might have an impact on cross-cultural communication strategies, foreign language teaching techniques, and linguistic studies on English-Jonglish prosody blending.
