Abstract

This paper reports on the results of a study aiming to investigate the student’s ability to write recount text of a university student in Bandung. The study was conducted using the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), especially functional grammar, in terms of the Transitivity, Mood and Modality system. The study used a case study on text analysis. A text, which is a recount text written by a higher achiever university student, was analysed using the Transitivity, Mood and Modality system. In terms of the Transitivity system, the result indicates the writer’s adequate syntactic compression and rich lexico-grammatical patterns. Moreover, in terms of the Mood and Modality system, the text shows the writer’s ability to infuse, temper, negotiate, and constrain the experiential meanings in the Mood that is in focus. Hence, the writer is categorized as a mature and critical writer, and the text is appropriate to be used as a model text. Research on text analysis using SFL of different genres of text and how the teaching of writing should be conducted to help improve students’ writing ability is recommended.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has played a crucial role in many fields of study, and its merits and demerits have been investigated by related scholars. However, it seems a somewhat gray area when implementing AI in teaching and learning. This could be mainly because AI developers know little about learning varied sciences and they also lack pedagogical knowledge for implementing AI in teaching (Luckin & Cukurova, 2019). Therefore, the current research aimed at gathering data regarding the online behaviors of 21 Iranian EFL university students through installing an application on their mobile phones for a period of eight days. Afterwards, the collected data were analyzed through Data Science methods and varied patterns of behavior were recognized. The results exhibited that messaging and social media applications are two great parts of the students’ life. Also, there existed some common patterns regarding the applications students owned and the amount of time they spent on them. As a small case in point, the results of the study cannot be generalized; however, the outcomes highlight the proof that in an EFL context, serious steps need to be adopted by course designers and stakeholders in order to cultivate a greater and purposeful use of online learning applications, websites etc. among EFL university students so as to enhance the teaching-learning process. This gains prominence because any AI-mediated learning approach is believed to enhance students’ second/foreign language motivation as well as self-regulation in learning. AI is actually promising a revolution in the realm of language education.

Abstract

This study focuses on the experiences of pre-service teachers that may trigger anxiety and delve into the potential benefits and effectiveness of FLTA in enhancing language acquisition and proficiency. By conducting in-depth studies and investigations on this topic, researchers look at the impact of FLTA. They can better understand how FLTA can optimize their problem-solving skills to facilitate language learning and provide valuable insight for language education, especially in EFL classrooms. This study used a narrative strategy to investigate the pre-service EFL teachers' experiences with teaching foreign language anxiety during their teaching practice while enrolled in the Teacher Profession Education Program. The subjects of this study were 3 English pre-service teachers who had completed teaching practice in junior and senior high schools during a professional teaching program in the city of Solo and its surroundings, Central Java, Indonesia. As a result of this study, several sources contributed to participants' experience of teaching foreign language anxiety, such as self-perception of language proficiency, leading inexperience, lack of student interest, fear of negative evaluation, and lack of time and class management. Participants in the teaching practicum also attempt to confront and overcome their worries; the strategies are personal coping strategies, professional coping strategies, social coping strategies, and institutional coping strategies. Although the participants experienced some anxiety while teaching practicum, they overcame it through various strategies. So, leading practicum activities from one meeting to the following allowed participants to develop their abilities and overcome their concerns about teaching in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

This research aims to identify appraisal devices in two editorial texts in the Javanese magazine Panjebar Semangat on the news texts of Ferdy Sambo case entitled Kasus Sambo Isih Dawa and Ganjaran Murwat Tumrap Kejujuran and describe the ideology of the author of the editorial text. Data were analyzed using the Appraisal System in Functional Systemic Linguistics, including Attitude, Graduation, and Engagement. The results of the appraisal analysis on the first text are 69 attitudes data from 68 clauses. A total of 69 attitudes data were found, consisting of 33 positive attitudes and 36 negative attitudes. Monogloss data with 44 data dominate these attitudes compared to heterogloss data with 25 data. In terms of Graduation, journalists used the intensifier type only eight times. For the second text, 55 attitudes data from 48 clauses. The total of 55 data was dominated by positive evaluations of 43 data, while there were only 12 negative evaluations. It can be interpreted that this editorial text has a very positive nuance. The text is dominated by monogloss data, namely 47 data, compared to heterogloss data, which is only 8 data. The outcomes of the analysis conducted on the editorial texts within the Panjebar Semangat Javanese magazine indicate a predominant reliance on judgment as the principal method of Appraisal, succeeded by appreciation and affect. The analysis explicitly emphasizes the assessment of individual character traits, with Richard, Sambo, and Putri identified as the primary subjects of evaluation. This finding underscores the potential of news as a mechanism for the exercise of social control, with the deployment of judgment serving to consolidate specific societal values and beliefs. This editorial text makes journalists themselves the dominant source of evaluators. In terms of Graduation, journalists also tend to increase their Attitude appraisal using intensifiers. The dominance of monogloss in the editorial text is linguistic evidence that the journalist deliberately composed the editorial text using the point of view of himself.

Abstract

Knowing how to produce speech act especially refusal appropriately is necessary since it is known as ‘face-threatening’ act, otherwise it would lead to discomfort between interlocutors. This ability may be influenced by many factors, one of which is motivation. One of the pragmatic motivation types is Speech Act Specific Motivation (SASM), which was found to have explanatory power to predict production of a certain speech act. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between learners’ refusal-SASM and their refusal. The subject was the students of English Education Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. Discourse Completion Task (DCT) and refusal-SASM questionnaire were used in collecting the data needed. The results showed that the correlation between the two variables was insignificant, the refusal-SASM contributed only 3% towards the learners’ refusal. The recent study also found that the leaners tended to use indirect strategy in refusing to almost all situations. The reason of this phenomenon is likely to be the influence of L1 culture. However, further studies are highly suggested in this matter.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the communication style of Human-machine interaction based on ChatGPT 3.5 to understand the pros and cons, as well as potential improvements in the implementation of this technology. Humans have limitations in processing complex information. The emergence of machines helps humans complete work, and many machine features provide solutions. This research found out human-machine interaction, focuses on communication and using cooperative principles that have four maxims: maxim quantity, maxim quality, maxim relation, and maxim manner are some of the divisions that will be sought in human-machine interaction. The research uses a qualitative method by using a chatbot as a GPT version 3.5 chat that is then given a command. Then, the data is collected and analyzed. From this analysis, human-machine interaction qualitatively has good performance but has a deficiency in maximum quantity due to too much information given. The outcome of the violation of the maxim quantity that stands out requires self-interpretation where the statements correspond to the question. This research is expected to help develop human-machine interaction technology primarily in business.

Abstract

This article endeavors to scrutinize the creation and functionalities of interrogative constructions, with a specific emphasis on the Makassar Language. The research design employed in this study involved the use of primary sources and followed a descriptive approach. Data collection was carried out through conversations with Makassar participants. To analyze the syntactic data, the study adopted X-Bar Theory as its theoretical foundation, which was then depicted in the form of syntax trees. The findings of this study indicated that the Makassar Language serves two grammatical functions, namely as a specifier and a complement. The highest level of projection in this structure was the Complementizer Phrase/CP. The distinction between these functions lay in the placement of question words. When a question word was positioned at the beginning of a sentence, it functioned as a specifier and followed the interrogative structure rule of QW + Subject + Predicate + Adv (optional). On the other hand, question words that required an answer other than the subject or were positioned at the end of a sentence were referred to as complementary functions. In this function, the researcher identified the pattern where the structure was written as Subject + Predicate + QW. X-Bar theory also helps in teaching syntax which needs a lot practice including creating tree diagrams of sentences to parse each constituent that requires a platform or program that can lead the students to diagramming

Abstract

Novels are one of the literary discourses that impact the field of literacy today. This is caused by the value content contained in the novel. The value content infused through the novel will indirectly provide learning and new perspectives for the reader. The novel written by the writer with an Islamic boarding school background, Khilma Anis, entitled Hati Suhita is an example of a novel with values that have an impact on the point of view and mindset regarding the position and representation of women, especially from the perspective of a female writer. This novel brings an interesting theme in the critical discourse analysis model of Sara Mills. This research focuses on the position and representation of women in the novel. This research method uses qualitative research. The data used is in the form of novel manuscripts. Data collection techniques through reduction, data display, and verification. The results of the analysis show that the dominance of women as objects (position and representation of women) is dominated through 8 elements, namely 5 elements of critical discourse analysis at the phrase/sentence level (Metaphor, Transitivity system, Proverb, Feminism and Ideology, and Jokes and humor) and 3 elements at the discourse level (fragmentation, focalization, role).

Abstract

In the post-COVID-19 era, lecturers frequently employ internet tools to facilitate learning. However, the majority of speech act research to date has been conducted using data from online learning platforms such as Learning Management Systems (LMS) or Microsoft Teams. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the occurrence of illocutionary speech acts used by lecturers in the Statistics for Language Research course. Descriptive qualitative research was employed in this study to analyze data obtained from the speech characteristics in messages posted in the Statistics for Language Research (SLR) course on the LMS and conversations between the lecturer and students recorded on Microsoft Teams. Data analysis was conducted based on the speech acts theory from Searle (1969). The study's findings showed that the courses employed four different illocutionary speech patterns. The study's findings revealed that the courses utilized four distinct illocutionary speech patterns. The most frequent occurrences were noted in assertive, expressive, directive, and commissive speech acts. From the data, it is evident that assertive speech acts are the dominant type. Furthermore, commissive speech acts were involved in the LMS, primarily focusing on scheduling plans for class. To conclude, it is implied that the recordings highlighted assertive speech acts as the dominant type, which was mainly utilized for explaining materials to students.

Abstract

The choice of use of languages in schools, including in the linguistic schoolscapes, represents the contestation of language identities, ideologies, and power. This study looks at the position of English, as opposed to Indonesian, Arabic, and Javanese, in the linguistic schoolscapes in an Indonesian Islamic boarding school in Central Java. A descriptive qualitative method and the theoretical framework of language planning and policy (Spolsky, 2004) are used to analyze the data. The findings show that Javanese and Indonesian are used in daily communication. English and Arabic are taught in the language program. In the signs at the boarding school, English is the second language to be used frequently at the linguistic school cape, after Indonesian, while Javanese, as the students' everyday language, is far behind. The implication of the linguistic school landscape finding in this research is that foreign languages such as English, Arabic, and others considered necessary have the potential to become a new development in language teaching and learning.
