Abstract

Utilization of waste as an energy source for Waste-to-Energy Power Plants is an implementation of Waste to Energy (WtE). This research begins by calculating the potential waste generation in each province in Indonesia based on data from the National Waste Management Information System in 2024 and the projected waste generation in 2025. The calculation is based on the assumption that every 1000 tons/day of waste has the potential to be converted into energy of 20 MW. The results of the calculation of electrical power from the potential waste generation in 2025 of around 60-65 million tons obtained electrical power of around 3,655 MW or 3.655 GW. Based on the volume of waste generation in each province, the potential for electrical power is divided into 5 (five) categories, namely the Very Large category for West Java and East Java with an electrical power of 350-500 MW, the Large category with a power of 160-350 MW in DKI Jakarta and Central Java, the Medium category in Banten and South Sulawesi with an electrical power of 60-180 MW and the Small category with a potential electrical power of 20-60 MW in Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Lampung, DI Yogyakarta, Bali, NTB, NTT, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan and North Sulawesi. The remaining 17 of the 38 provinces are in the Very Small category with an electrical power of only 0-20 MW. The number of PLTSa that has the potential to be built is around 34 units, namely 5 units in West Java, 4 units in East Java, 3 units in DKI Jakarta and Central Java, 2 units in Banten and South Sulawesi and 1 unit each in 15 provinces with a small category power.

Abstract

The construction of slope protection is an essential measure for maintaining soil stability and infrastructure integrity in landslide-prone areas. However, cost efficiency often becomes a point of contention due to variations in construction treatment types, geotechnical conditions, execution methods, and material selection. This study aims to analyze the cost-effectiveness of various slope reinforcement alternatives using the Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (CER) approach. The analysis was conducted on three critical slope locations along the national road sections of Gorontalo Province: Sta. 32+140, Sta. 34+340, and Sta. 5+540. Numerical simulations using Plaxis 8.2 software were employed to calculate the Safety Factor (SF) under both static and dynamic conditions. The results indicate that the implementation of slope protection measures increased the SF values by 30–73% (static) and 3–24% (dynamic). CER values demonstrated efficiency variations ranging from 3.7% to 54.68%, with the combination of retaining walls and bored piles yielding the highest cost-effectiveness. This study emphasizes the importance of design selection based on cost-effectiveness analysis in planning landslide mitigation for national roads to achieve effective and efficient designs.

Abstract

Soil contamination by the heavy metal lead (Pb) poses a significant threat to public health and ecosystems. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the ex-situ biopile method for remediating Pb-contaminated soil at the Kawatuna Landfill, Palu City. Soil samples were collected from the contaminated site and treated in a biopile prototype with controlled aeration and moisture, with the addition of compost as an amendment at 10% (w/w). Laboratory analyses conducted at the Integrated Laboratory of Tadulako University showed a decrease in total Pb concentration from 41.96 mg/kg to 31.83 mg/kg after seven days of treatment. This corresponds to a removal efficiency of 24.13% and an average degradation rate of 1.45 mg/kg·day. These results indicate that the biopile method is capable of reducing Pb concentrations in soil during the initial stage of treatment; however, optimization of treatment duration and operational conditions is required to achieve regulatory soil quality standards. Furthermore, the use of locally sourced compost as a nutrient amendment and the absence of secondary waste generation support the biopile method as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective soil remediation technology.

Abstract

The home-based tempeh industry faces serious challenges in managing liquid waste containing pollutants such as Total Suspended Solid (TSS), ammonia, turbidity, and pH that exceed quality standards. This study aims to determine the decrease in pollutant levels in tempeh industry liquid waste with a combination of coffee grounds and rice husk adsorbents, and to determine the effect of giving variations in adsorbent mass on the value of pollutant parameters in tempeh industry liquid waste. The method used was quantitative experimental with waste samples from Monas Tempe Factory. The adsorbent mass variations tested were 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1, with a total dose of 8 grams per 500 ml of waste, and the adsorption process was carried out with magnetic stirring for 30 minutes at 300 rpm. The results showed that the adsorbent combination was effective in reducing TSS and ammonia, with the highest TSS reduction reaching 53.42% and ammonia 67.33% in the 1:2 variation. The maximum adsorption capacity for TSS was 4330 mg/g and for ammonia 127.50 mg/g. However, this treatment also caused an increase in turbidity (-19937.50%) and pH (-16.88%). The Freundlich isotherm model is more suitable to explain the adsorption process, indicating that adsorption is favorable and occurs physically with multilayer. Although this combination was effective in reducing TSS and ammonia, there were limitations in dealing with turbidity and pH.

Abstract

The Angsau Three-Way Intersection, located in Pelaihari District, Tanah Laut Regency, South Kalimantan Province, serves as a key junction connecting several surrounding cities and regencies. Over time, the steady increase in population has contributed to a rise in transportation usage, leading to higher traffic volumes within Tanah Laut. Consequently, a study is required to assess the traffic service level at the Angsau Intersection to determine appropriate future improvements. Referring to the Pedoman Kapasitas Jalan Indonesia (PKJI) 2023 and utilizing the Indonesia Road Capacity Analysis software (KAJI), this research aims to provide comparative insights as well as recommendations for future development at the intersection. Based on the collected data and analysis, the highest traffic density occurs during weekends, with peak traffic volume recorded between 16:40–17:40 at 3,945 vehicles/hour. The resulting Level of Service indicates that the intersection is approaching the threshold of the Degree of Saturation (Dj), with a value of 0.76 (Dj < 0.80). The initial improvement effort to address the increasing traffic flow involves geometric enhancements on both the minor and major roads, along with the construction of a median of at least 3 meters, which effectively reduces the Dj value to 0.61 (Dj < 0.80). A second improvement alternative—geometric modifications on the minor and major roads—also proves effective in lowering the Dj value to 0.61 (Dj < 0.80).

Abstract

Domestic wastewater treatment often faces challenges due to high concentrations of organic matter and dissolved solids that can pollute the environment if left untreated. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a honeycomb biofilter in reducing key wastewater pollutants. The method applied was a laboratory-scale experiment using a small-scale WWTP system equipped with a honeycomb biofilter unit. The treatment results showed a significant reduction of BOD from 56 mg/L to 4.15 mg/L (92% efficiency), COD from 224 mg/L to 5 mg/L (97% efficiency), and TDS from 290 mg/L to 194 mg/L (30% efficiency). All parameters meet the quality standards. However, pH decreased from 7.4 to 4.4 (40% reduction), indicating the need for a pH adjustment unit before final discharge. In conclusion, the honeycomb biofilter proved effective in reducing organic load and dissolved solids, although integration with a pH neutralization unit is required to comply with environmental standards.
