The study examines the effectiveness of Moodle in teaching Sharaf (Arabic morphology) by taking into account the students’ locus of control (LOC). A 2x2 factorial design was used in this study. In general, the group of students who were taught by using Moodle showed higher scores than the group who were taught without using Moodle. When the students’ LOC were taken into consideration, however, the students with external LOC in the Moodle group showed lower scores than those with external LOC in the non-Moodle group. The opposite was true for the students with internal LOC. It can be concluded that using Moodle in teaching Sharaf was effective when the students have internal LOC, but not effective when they have external LOC. Considering the students have internal LOC, the use of Moodle can improve the quality of teaching Sharaf and the students’ scores

Abstract: This study aims to find a new method in learning and teaching literature to the students in practical terms and to perceive the students’ response toward the assignment of musical poetry project through social media. Studying literature in the writer's environment (Lampung) is a monotonous activity for students. By having a musical poetry project, students have some creativities in creating, composing, showing and recording and then uploading the result through social media. In the end, the hidden talents of the students can be seen and they are expected to become musicians, writers, event organizers, and others. In addition, the students also give positive response to this method. Assignment of musical poetry project through social media can improve students’ creativity. permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v46i12018p029

Children's stories used in this study are children's novels. The method used is literary analysis in the form of a mimetic approach. Data sources are in the form of text excerpts from children's novels by children and adults. The results of the study are a comparison of reality and story development in children's novels by children and adults. In terms of reality, it is found that children's stories are imitations of children's real life interpretations as reviewed in children's characteristics. When viewed from the perspective of cultivation, children's stories written by children have simpler storyline, use many conversational texts and tend to use simple sentences. On the other hand, the storylines and sentences in children's stories written by adults are more complex, although the vocabulary used is still simple. Keywords: Children's stories, Reality, StorylinesCERITA ANAK: REALITAS DAN PENGGARAPANAbstrak: Tujuan artikel ini mengkaji realitas dan penggarapan pada cerita anak karya anak-anak dan orang dewasa. This research intends to find out whether or not Indonesian EFL learners are aware of the presence of “space” and lexicalize it in their English compositions. It takes 21 seventh-semester English Department students as research subjects. They are given story pictures and asked to write a narrative. The resulting 21 EFL narratives are measured against a native-speaker narrative model in terms of “spatial words” (prepositions and adverbial particles), producing the following comparisons: 6.6% : 7.2% in total, 78.2% : 85.7% used dynamically, 95.5% : 100% used obligato-rily, and 19.2% : 28.6% used in phrasal verbs. This means that Indonesian EFL learners are sensitive enough to “space” and know how to lexicalize it in their com- positions. Theoretically, their sensitivity to “space” implies that while learning Eng- lish they have undergone some cognitive restructuring; and practically, EFL learners who wish to acquire near-native style in writing should be competent in space lexi- calization.

This paper aims to discuss phonological processes in Javanese, which are phonologically and syntactically conditioned. By using the Optimality Theory (OT), the relation between the input (phonemic form) and the output (phonetic form) involved in phonological processes will be explained. The data used in this paper are taken from a Javanese native speaker of Semarang dialect. In addition, this paper also used intuitive data from the writer, who is also a Javanese native speaker of Semarang dialect. The result of the analysis shows that OT is relevant to explain the phonological processes in Javanese such as a deletion of voiceless obstruents, adeletion of weak vowel [ə], an addition of weak vowel [ə], and an insertion of nasal

Unlike English that divides its conditional sentences into open and hypothetical types, there is no division of conditional sentence types in Indonesian. Hence, translating conditional sentences from Indonesian to English is challenging. The purpose of this study was to determine the equivalence of meaning and structure of the conditional sentences in the source language (Indonesian) and the target language (English) in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novel, Gadis Pantai, and its English translation. As this novel is a literary work, the complexity of the structure of the conditional sentence in this novel is very interesting to study. The method used in this study is comparative descriptive which was employed to provide clear pictures of the discussed issues. The findings of the study show that in translating the conditional sentence from Bahasa Indonesia into English in the novels, the translator has made some adjustments both in the sentence structure and meaning due to thesignificant differences of the social-cultural aspect between the source and the target language

Abstract: This study aims to reveal the stereotypes about government formed by HTI in the propaganda bulletin articles published in Al-Islam. This study uses descriptive qualitative critical discourse analysis approach of Fairclough’s models. Based on textual analysis (micro analysis), discourse practical analysis and socio-cultural practical dimension (macro) the buletin indicates that HTI provides a solution by building a positive stigma against the struggle doctrine of HTI, namely the application of Islamic law and the need for Godly Muslim leaders. To reinforce the positive stigma about the ideology and the concept, HTI formed a variety of negative stereotypes of the Government by pointing at the Government’s inability, liberal economic system, capitalist government partisanship, transactional politics and the Government’s partisanship to foreign advantages. The formation of the various stereotypes may result in public antipathy towards the GovernmentPermalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v45i22017p143

Putting self-autonomy of a man as the rational subject itself is an extreme while putting a dependency of rational human subject within themselves in relation to psychological, socio-economic is the other extreme. This study aims at explaining how the main character, Minke in the narrative discourse address these two extremes. The data in this research were in the form of text units which were analyzed using Buhler semiotic model. The results of the study showed that there are three ways used by the subjects to express themselves, namely (1) symptomic way, which was expressed through the validity claims of honesty; (2) the signalic way, shown through the regulative speech using normative validity of accuracy; and (3) the symbolic way, done through the objective validity of truth claims. The findings imply that the subject’s orientations in doing communicative speech acts are the achievement of self-understanding and rational agreement without violence.
