Abstract

The world of Saudi Arabia and Islam in the perspectives of Indonesians: The narrative of migrant workers in Pelukis Gurun Pasir (2018) by Fuad AbdurahmanThe world of Saudi Arabia in the diaspora experiences of Fuad Abdurahman is written in a novel entitled Pelukis Gurun Pasir (2018). The problems discussed in this study are: (1) the position of subject or author in the narrative structure of the text, (2) the author's relationship with the country of origin, and (3) the voices that appear within the migrant subject in dealing with Saudi Arabian tradition. The theory used is diaspora poetics, which emphasizes the concept of language expression as part of the subject's identity. The object of the research is Pelukis Gurun Pasir (2018) and the author's response to traditions in Saudi Arabia. The data include the narrative structure of the novel’s text, the ideas in the text, the author's biography, and diaspora discourse or social situations. The results show that the image of Saudi Arabian society tends to be evaluated negatively by emphasizing on the chaotic sexuality description of Arabic men, making Saudi Arabia a masculine country. Teori yang digunakan adalah puitika diaspora yang menekan pada konsep ekpresi bahasa sebagai bagian dari identitas subjek. Objek kajian penelitian adalah novel Pelukis Gurun Pasir (2018) dan tanggapan pengarang terhadap tradisi di Arab Saudi. Data yang digunakan adalah tata naratif teks novel, gagasan yang muncul dalam teks, riwayat pengarang, dan wacana diaspora atau situasi sosial. Hasil penelitian ini adalah bahwa citra masyarakat Arab Saudi cenderung dinilai secara negatif dengan menekankan pada deskripsi seksualitas yang kacau dari laki-laki Arab sehingga Arab Saudi adalah negeri maskulin. Selain itu, pengarang justru menemukan nilai-nilai keislaman yang toleran berada di Indonesia sehingga pengarang merindukan pulang ke Indonesia.Kata Kunci: diaspora, pengarang, Arab Saudi, tata naratif

Abstract

Evaluating two English coursebooks used at Wima Kids English course, this study aims at finding out whether Hip Hip Hooray and Backpack fulfill the objectives of teaching English at Wima Kids and whether they are designed according to the principles of TEYL. Furthermore, in what aspects Hip Hip Hooray could be complemented with the materials in Backpack. The instruments used in this study were the researchers themselves equipped with an Evaluation Checklist by Bilash (2009) and in-depth interviews with some teachers who have used those two books in their classes. Using the check list, it was found out that Hip Hip Hooray and Backpack are in accordance with the objective of teaching English at Wima Kids, which is to help learners to be able to use English for communication, especially orally. The two series also fulfill the principles of TEYL. Further, the last finding revealed that Backpack can supplement Hip Hip Hooray series in language content, topic content, teaching tips and techniques, and grammar activities.

Abstract

Ideology representation in the editorial of Koran Tempo and Kompas on COVID-19 handling in IndonesiaThis article examines the editorials in Koran Tempo and Kompas in representing their ideology of COVID-19 handling in Indonesia. This linguistic research is conducted qualitative­ly. The data were in the form of Indonesian-language editorial discourse, which discussed the COVID-19 handling in Indonesia. The written research data were taken from national news­papers, namely Koran Tempo and Kompas, and were obtained through the use of listening and note-taking techniques. They were then analyzed using Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis model. The results of the analysis show that there are differences in the representa­tion of ideology in Koran Tempo and Kompas on COVID-19 handling in Indonesia through their editorials that are systematically constructed in microstructure, superstruc­ture, and macrostructure. In the microstructure, ideology is realized through the lexicon, specifically the use of the dominant persona, use of syntactic structures in the form of active-passive sentences, affirmative sentences, and imperative sentences, as well as the use of repetition styles and metaphors. Koran Tempo uses ideological patterns as actions and ideology beliefs in its superstructure. Meanwhile, Kompas uses ideological patterns as systems of thought and systems of action. The difference between the microstructure and the superstructure results in a different macrostructure. Koran Tempo portrays government as the key stakeholder in handling COVID-19 in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Kompas’ editorial was directed at how the handling of COVID-19 was done through communal actions. The Koran Tempo ideology underlines who has a role in handling COVID-19, while the Kompas ideology focuses at what needs to be done in handling COVID-19.Keywords: critical discourse analysis, editorial discourse, ideology, COVID-19Representasi ideologi dalam tajuk Koran Tempo dan Kompas tentang penanganan COVID-19 di IndonesiaArtikel ini mengkaji perihal bagaimana tajuk pada Koran Tempo dan Kompas merepresentasikan ideologinya tentang penanganan COVID-19 di Indonesia. Penelitian ini berjenis kualitatif dalam bidang linguistik. Data yang dianalisis berbentuk wacana tajuk berbahasa Indonesia yang berisi tentang penanganan COVID-19 di Indonesia. Sumber data penelitian berwujud tertulis yang diambil dari surat kabar nasional: Koran Tempo dan Kompas. Metode simak dan teknik catat dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan data. Model analisis wacana kritis dari Van Dijk diterapkan untuk meng­analisis data. Hasil analisis menggambarkan adanya perbedaan representasi ideologi Koran Tempo dan Kompas tentang penanganan COVID-19 di Indonesia melalui tajuk yang dikonstruksi secara sistematis dalam struktur mikro, super struktur, dan struktur makro. Dalam struktur mikro, ideologi direalisasikan melalui leksikon, khususnya penggunaan kata persona yang dominan, peng­gunaan struktur sintaksis berupa kalimat aktif-pasif, kalimat berita, dan kalimat perintah, serta pengguna­an gaya repetisi dan metafora. Koran Tempo menggunakan pola ideologi sebagai tindakan dan ideologi sebagai keyakinan dalam super strukturnya. Sebaliknya, Kompas mengguna­kan pola ideologi sebagai sistem pemikiran dan sistem tindakan. Perbedaan struktur mikro dan super struktur tersebut menghasilkan struktur makro yang berbeda pula. Koran Tempo mengangkat tema tentang pemerintah sebagai aktor kunci dalam penanganan COVID-19 di Indonesia. Sementara itu, tema tajuk Kompas diarahkan pada penanganan COVID-19 yang dilakukan dengan berbagai tindakan secara bersama-sama. Ideologi Koran Tempo mengarah pada siapa yang berperan dalam penanganan COVID-19, sedangkan ideologi Kompas mengarah pada apa yang perlu dilakukan dalam penanganan COVID-19. Kata kunci: analisis wacana kritis, wacana tajuk, ideologi, COVID-19

Abstract

This study aims at describing the implementation of Generative Transformation Grammar approach in the teaching of Makassar language in primary school. The steps in conducting this development research are by doing preparation,applying the model, conducting tests, evaluating and doing revision. The subjects in this study were students of SDN Pa’bangngiang Somba Opu sub-district at Gowa Regency which was randomly selected. Through the result of the tests, the students’ performance was measured which are collected and analyzed descriptively. The teaching and learning instructional materials developed are lesson plans, students’ book, and teachers guide based on TTG approach. The result of the study shows that the  implementation of TTG approach in the teaching of Makassar language effectively increases the students’ knowledge and their performance to use the language

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the vocabulary of low grade primary school students based on the type and form of the word, and also the type and semantics domain. Source of research data is in the form of students written language derived from the essays of graders 2 and 3 from 6 elementary schools in Bandung. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results showed: 1) the type of words made up of nouns (37%), verbs (35%), adverbial (10%), function words (9%), pronouns (5%), numeralia (3%), and adjectives (1%); 2) forms of words consist of basic words (62%), derivational words (28%), particle (0.8%), reduplicative words (0.2%), compound words, (0.01); 3) classification of the meaning consists of referential meaning (87%) and nonreferential meaning (13%); and 4) semantics domain include: motion-employment (29%), function words (13%), personal pronouns /reference (10%), nature (7%), tempe-rament/properties/color (5%), animals ( 4.7%), the life of the community (4.6%), games (2.7%), home/parts (2.4%), numeral words (2.3%), food/beverages (1.8%), body parts (1.4%), disease-treatment 91.3%). Permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v45i12017p099

Abstract

This research is aimed to study the phenomena of the socio-cultural characteristics, the shift of shape variety, techniques of production, function, as well as the adaptation pattern of the pottery makers of Pagelaran. The study is done holistically and in depth by using qualitative approach through the design of phenomenology. The factual data is gained through in depth interviews, observation and study of documentation with the researchers acting as the key instrument. The validity of the data is maintained by using the source triangulation technique, triangulation of methods, and triangulation of theory. The data are analyzed through the process of reduction, presentation, verification, and paradigmatic theory analysis by using the perspective of the theory of socio-culture, aesthetic of crafting art, and adaptation. This research resulted some points, first is the characteristics of the community of pottery craft of Pagelaran that is heavily holding the Malangan local culture, yet the Javanese culture still heavily attached especially in the behavior of mutual cooperation and the practice of traditional ceremony. Second, the presence of shifting of pottery shaping, technique, and the function of the pottery craft of Pagelaran from the point that they are only making the traditional pottery products into making the creative and innovated pottery products. Third is the findings of two adaptation patterns that is done by the pottery craft community of Pagelaran, that is the functional adaptation pattern through the concept of revitalization and the adaptation pattern processual through the concept of reinterpretation.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to describe the cohesive devices found in the students’ written discourse along with its development and usage errors. The data were gathered from the students’ writing products from 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders of SDN Baratajaya, Surabaya by using observation and tests as the instruments to obtain the data. The result of the study shows that allelementary students’ written discourses (grade 3, 4 and 5) apply the cohesive devices. The cohesive devices most widely used in their written discourse are  conjunctions, lexical synonymy, and grammatical ellipsis. The findings illustrate not only the development of the usage on cohesive devices through its percentages on conjuctions, repetition, and synonymy in the students’ written discourses but also the description of the cohesive device errors through the use of conjunction, ellipsis,substitution, reference and repetition.

Abstract

INSTABILITY OF BISSU CHARACTERS IN FAISAL ODDANG'S FICTION: THE PHENOMENON OF INTERTEXTUALITY ZONE HETEROTOPIAAbstract: This article describes the phenomenon of instability bissu characters in literary works by Faisal Oddang. The research subjects were the novel Tiba Sebelum Berangkat and short story anthology Sawerigading Datang dari Laut. Both of these works were used as a source of primary data, whereas books or journal articles about bissu was used as a secondary data source. This article utilizes the theory initiated by Brian McHale statement about literary work in the postmodernist zone. If the dominant is the ontological trait rather than epistemological, it raises issues and components of different and encroaches on the historical zone. The analysis was shown from fiction to fiction, such as one written by Oddang about bissu character which was presented in inconsistent and encroaching way. Oddang presented bissu in various characterizations and professions. A bissu was shown in one story to have a libido, to work as a spy for the rebellious act, and that the leader bissu only prioritizes ego. In the other story, however, a bissu was shown to work as bridal makeup artist. Still in another story, bissu was shown to work as a translator for the epic I La Galigo. Inconsistency is also seen at the characters of Isuri and Rahing, whom he often utilized in the storyline. The changes of bissu characters in every literary work showed an ontological instability—a universe called intertextuality zone heterotopia. Subjek penelitian adalah novel Tiba Sebelum Berangkat dan antologi cerpen Sawerigading Datang dari Laut. Kedua karya tersebut digunakan sebagai sumber data primer, sedangkan buku atau jurnal penelitian mengenai bissu digunakan sebagai sumber data sekunder. Artikel ini memanfaatkan teori yang digagas oleh Brian McHale mengenai keberadaan karya fiksi yang dikatakan masuk zona pascamodernis apabila yang dominan adalah sifat ontologis daripada epistemologis. Sifat ontologis mengangkat isu-isu dan komponen-komponen yang berbeda-beda dan melanggar batas zona historis. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa dari karya fiksi satu ke fiksi lainnya yang sama-sama ditulis Oddang, tokoh bissu dihadirkan secara inkonsisten dan melanggar batas. Oddang menampilkan bissu dengan berbagai penokohan dan profesi. Dalam satu cerita, Bissu ditunjukkan memiliki libido, menjadi mata-mata pemberontakan, dan pemimpin bissu hanya memprioritaskan ego sendiri. Dalam cerita lain, bissu berprofesi sebagai perias pengantin, dalam cerita lainnya lagi bissu bekerja sebagai penerjemah kitab I La Galigo. Selain itu, inkosistensi juga tampak pada tokoh Rahing dan Isuri yang seringkali ia manfaatkan dalam alur cerita. Terjadinya perubahan diri tokoh-tokoh bissu dalam setiap karya fiksi, menunjukkan terjadinya instabilitas ontologis—sebuah kesemestaan yang disebut dengan zona intertekstualitas heterotopia. Abstract

This article shows that ethnography, as an approach, is a very useful tool to be applied in research attempting a good understanding of EFL/ESL classrooms. With reference to work done by anthropologists and classroom researchers, the pre- sent article argues that education, including EFL/ESL classrooms, can be well un- derstood by using ethnographic  approaches.  This is done by elaborating  the rele- vance of ethnography and the classroom context in the sense that ethnographic prin- ciples are applicable in describing and understanding the culture of a classroom, and EFL/ESL teaching in particular.
