Abstract

This paper presents a description of personal morality from a children’s novel entitled Misteri Pedang Skinheald by Ataka (12 years old). Using thematic studies by the techniques of reading several times, it is found out that there are many information related to the children’s personal morality such as: responisbility, independence, honesty, purity, love, humility, self-consistency, justice, freedom and confidence.  These morality portrait are developed  into a narrative story without showing explicitly the moreal element within the plot from beginning to the end. Yet, the novel is packaged using simple, real and chronological order storyline

Abstract

Every type of verb has a specific distribution in the context of plot in the written Indonesian tale narrative discourse (WNDBI). That specific distribution im- plies specific verb functions and meanings in the context of plot in WNDBI.  There are three types of verbs dominant in the use of verbs in the WNDBI, namely materi- al-process verbs, relational-process verbs, and mental-process verbs. Types of claus- es, internal pattern of clauses embedded by certain types of verbs, and characteristics of participants have effects on the functions and meanings of the clauses in WNDBI. The written Indonesian tale narrative discourse possesses a characteristic of accentu- ating physical conflicts among the participants. Abstract

This study aims at describing the appropriate and correct use of prepositions in elementary school students’ composition. The design of this study is qualitative research combined with formal approaches for students in grade 3, 4, 5 and 6. The results of the study indicate that (1) there is a preposition used in all grades; (2) there are some prepositions used in certain grade; (3) some preposition functions are found in all grades; and (4) some preposition functions are found in certain grades.

Abstract

The study aims to describe the type, meaning, function, and strategy of the mythology of  Amungme,  an  ethnic  group  in  Papua.  The  study is  based  on an assumption that the underlying concept of the Amungme mythology is the source of its conflict. The research design was based on the hermeneutics model of Schleiermacher, Dilthey, dan Richoeur. The study used quotations from the tales of the Amungme’s myth, attitudes of the Amungme people, statements from the resource persons of the Waa valley, and some written documents as the sources of data. Hermeneutical circle model was used to analyze the data. The result of the study shows that (1) the Amungme myth text contains human endogeonic, cosmogonic, eschatoic, languagenic, and animagenic types; (2) the three represented relations in the Amungme myth text are human-God, human-human, and human-nature relationships; (3) the myth has mystical, cosmological, sociological, and pedagogical function; (4) the legacy is passed on to the following generations based on the normative principles of the “three-generation speaking pattern”. The findings inform policy makers in development, ecology, and eduation in Papua, especially in the district of Amungsa.

Abstract

Abstract: Epiphany is a crucial event encountered by an individual which gives him/her an insight in his/her journey of meaning making to life. This qualitative research aims at finding out epiphany of  RII represented in her anthology of short stories, novelets, novels. The research has found out that RII, as a diffable figure, is mentally capable of creating extraordinary works which are: (a) useful for others, (b) inspiring, (c) affecting surrounding people to be stronger, and (d) mostly true-story based. Abstract

The Symbolic Meaning of Javanese Keris’ Patra Ornament using Ethnolinguistic ApproachAbstract: This study aimed to describe and to know the terms and symbolic meanings of Javanese keris’ patra ornaments. The meaning is not only lexical but also cultural; meaning which is associated with the civilization prevailing in that society. This research is a descriptive study using ethnolinguistic approach. Ethnolinguistic approach is used to uncover the meaning of the term patra deder which is related to local culture. The results of this study indicated that the patra ornament of Javanese keris has certain terms in each part. The meaning contained in the patra deder of Javanese keris is related to human life. It means that religious support, behaving politely and not arrogant, respecting each other, being responsible, obeying the prevailing norms and having positive thought are substantial in human life.Keywords: Symbolic meaning, Patra of Javanese keris, Ethnolinguistic MAKNA SIMBOLIS ISTILAH ORNAMEN PATRA KERIS JAWA DENGAN PENDEKATAN ETNOLINGUISTIK Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan dan memahami istilah pada ornamen patra keris Jawa dan makna simbolis yang terkandung di dalamnya. Makna tersebut tidak hanya makna leksikal saja, tetapi juga mengandung makna kultural yaitu makna yang dihubungkan dengan peradaban yang berlaku di masyarakat tersebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dengan menggunakan pendekatan etnolinguistik. Pendekatan etnolinguistik adalah menguak makna istilah pada patra deder yang dihubungan dengan kultur kebudayaan setempat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ornamen patra keris mempunyai istilah-istilah tertentu pada setiap bagiannya. Makna yang terkandung di dalam patra deder keris yaitu berhubungan dengan kehidupan manusia. Sebagai manusia harus mempunyai penopang agama dan dalam bertingkah laku harus sopan, tidak sombong, saling menghargai sesama, tanggung jawab, mentaati norma yang berlaku, dan selalu berfikir positif.Kata kunci: Makna simbolis, Patra keris Jawa, Etnolinguistik

Abstract

This research is conducted to improve the students‟ ability in appreciating poetry through the use of Inductive Model. This study applies Research and Development  method  which  has been  modified,  and  the  result  of  the  study is analyzed descriptively.  The result of the study reveals that the use  of Inductive Model is able to improve the students‟ ability in appreciating poetry by concerning eight instructional steps. The numerical improvement can be seen from the students‟ average scores in every treatment. On the first treatment, the students‟ average score is 60.9, the second treatment is 62.4 and on the third treatment is 65.3. Based on the criteria  of success,  the  students‟  average  scores seem to increase  from the  first treatment until the third treatment, from fair level into very good level. The first treatment  shows  an  increase  from  fair  level  into  excellent  level.  The  second treatment shows an increase from good to very good. Finally, the third treatment shows an increase from very good to excellent level

Abstract

The study is aimed to describe pela tradition discourse in Ambonese so- ciety. Qualitative Study  with hermeneutical design is applied in this study.  The data from oral discourse can be used as the primary data that focus on analysis, and other data in translating the meaning of oral discourse. Hermeneutical   model is used in analyzing  the data. The four   aspects  of the study were comprehended  carefully through the semantic, reflective and existential levels. The findings of the study have both theoretical and practical implications. Theoretically, it has implication on the culture study, discourse analysis, oral action and sociolinguistics.   Practically, it is valuable in determining policy in maintaining ethnic culture and enrichment the ref- erences in planning soft skill and local content instruction in schools

Abstract

This study emphasizes on the use of language in the Sufi book entitled Sirr al-Asrar wrriten by Sheikh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani. The purpose of this study is to analyze the content and the language used and the implications for learning Musykilat Ta'lim Al-lughah Al-'Arabiyah. The method used in the study is the Research and Development (R & D) which includes three main activities; they are: (1) an analysis of the contents of the form language of Sufi books Sirr al-Asrar, (2) the conceptualization of teaching materials Sufism language, (3) a trial or usur application Sufi language courses against Musykilat Ta'lim al-lughah al-'Arabiyah Lighair Nāṭiqīna Biha in Arabic Education Graduate Program UPI. The method of this study is qualitative description by employing Sirr al-Asrar as a data source. The results showed that there are some meaningful expressions in the form of words or phrases with symbolic, figurative and metaphorical. There are 1064 Sufi vocabulary and meaning of language and some Sufi terms and their meanings.

Abstract

This study compared the lexical density of undergraduate theses in the English Department of Universitas Negeri Jakarta with that of the articles published in certain reputable international journals. The approach used was the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The result of the comparison shows that the paragraphs in the undergraduate theses have lower average of lexical density than those in the journal articles.
