Abstract

Teachers have very strategic role in abolishing corruption, collusion and nepotism in Indonesia which has been a level of apprehensive. It can be done because through education, teachers can internalize the values of anti corruption, collusion and nepotism to the next generation of the nation naturally, programming and systematically. This research aims to reveal the teachers’ vision and perceptiontoward the program of integrating anti corruption, collusion and nepotism material in the teaching-learning process of Indonesian language. The result of this research can be used as a starting point in integrating the material of anti corruption, collusion and nepotism in Indonesian teaching-learning process.

Abstract

Experiences of ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse schoolBeing ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse school is a challenge. This study aims to explore the experiences of students from various ethnic groups as ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse school. These experiences cover both the barriers and the success of those students in adjusting to the culturally diverse school. Five students coming from diverse ethnic groups were recruited as the participants. This study adopted a qualitative design by using a semi-structured interview as the research instrument. The interview data were transcribed and then coded into several themes based on the focus of the research. The results showed that the ethnic minority students might find difficulties adjusting to the school at first. However, they gradually adjusted to the school because of these following factors: teachers’ support, students’ cohesiveness, students’ cooperation, and teachers’ equity. The results of this study imply that the ethnic minority students once experienced some challenges in adjusting to the school environment before they were facilitated with more positive schooling experiences related to student-student relationships and student-teacher relationships.Ketwords: adjusting process, barriers, ethnic minority students, experiences, multicultural education, culturally-responsive schoolPengalaman siswa etnis minoritas di sekolah dengan beragam budayaMenjadi siswa etnis minoritas di sekolah dengan beragam budaya merupakan sebuah tantangan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali pengalaman siswa dari berbagai latar belakang etnis sebagai etnis minoritas di sekolah yang beragam budaya. Pengalaman-pengalaman ini meliputi hambatan maupun keberhasilan para siswa tersebut dalam menyesuaikan diri dengan sekolah yang beragam budaya. Lima siswa yang berasal dari kelompok etnis yang berbeda direkrut sebagai responden. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kualitatif dengan menggunakan wawancara semi terstruktur sebagai instrumen penelitian. Data hasil wawancara ditranskripsikan kemudian dikategorikan menjadi beberapa tema sesuai dengan fokus penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa etnis minoritas pada awalnya kesulitan menyesuaikan diri dengan lingkungan sekolah. Namun, lambat laun mereka bisa menyesuaikan diri dengan sekolah karena beberapa faktor, yaitu dukungan dari guru, kekompakan siswa, kerjasama siswa, dan perlakuan yang imbang dari guru. Hasil penelitian ini mengimplikasikan bahwa siswa etnis minoritas mengalami beberapa tantangan dalam menyesuaikan diri dengan lingkungan sekolah sebelum mereka difasilitasi dengan pengalaman sekolah yang lebih positif yang berkaitan dengan hubungan antara siswa-siswa dan hubungan siswa-guru.Kata kunci: proses penyesuaian, hambatan, siswa etnis minoritas, pengalaman, pendidikan multikultural, sekolah yang responsif terhadap budaya.

Abstract

This paper is intended to describe the result of a research focusing on the students’  translation  problems  in  translating  Arabic  texts  into  Indonesian.  The problems result from the students’ understanding  and retelling (re-expressing)  the results  of  the  understanding  during  the  translation  process.  In  this  study,  the researcher is applying descriptive-qualitative method. The result shows that the students’ problems in translating have close relation with (1) the students’ understanding  of  linguistics  structure  and  non-linguistics  structure,  and  (2)  the students’ problems in retelling (re-expressing) the results of their reading regarding linguistics and non linguistics problem.

Abstract

The exploration of Indonesian students’ attributions in EFL reading and writing classesAlthough the previous studies have given so much attention to exploring the students’ attributions in various settings and academic levels, there is a scarcity of research that presents and compares findings on the attributions of Indonesian university students, specifically in the reading (receptive skill) and writing (productive skill) courses. This study researched students’ attributions in their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing and reading classrooms at a private university in Indonesia. The research participants were 161 students who responded to an online questionnaire that explored their attributions for the success or failure in achieving the learning objectives of the classes. The study revealed that most of the students in both courses could successfully achieve the learning objectives, and there were no attribution differences in the courses. Their effort and positive teacher’s performances were mostly cited attributions for the success, whereas low ability and lack of effort were the primary attributions for some students’ failure in achieving the learning objectives of the classes. Practical strategies to support teaching and learning in the EFL reading and writing classes and directions for further research were presented.Keywords: attribution, EFL teaching, reading, writingEksplorasi atribusi mahasiswa Indonesia di kelas menulis dan membaca bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asingMeskipun penelitian sebelumnya telah banyak mengeksplorasi atribusi siswa di tempat dan tingkat pendidikan yang berbeda, masih sedikit penelitian yang menyajikan dan membandingkan hasil kajian atribusi dari para mahasiswa Indonesia, khususnya di kelas membaca (kemampuan reseptif) dan menulis (kemampuan produktif). Kajian ini meneliti atribusi para mahasiswa di kelas menulis dan membaca bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing (EFL) di salah satu universitas swasta di Indonesia. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 161 mahasiswa. Mereka mengisi kuesioner secara online yang mengeksplorasi atribusi tentang keberhasilan dan kegagalan mereka untuk mencapai tujuan pembelajaran di dalam kelas. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa mayoritas mahasiswa merasa dapat mencapai tujuan pembelajaran dengan sukses, dan tidak ada perbedaan atribusi di kedua kelas tersebut. Usaha dan performa positif guru mereka menjadi atribusi yang banyak disebutkan oleh para mahasiswa untuk keberhasilannya, sedangkan tingkat kemampuan yang rendah dan kurangnya usaha menjadi atribusi utama yang menjelaskan tentang kegagalan beberapa mahasiswa untuk mencapai tujuan pembelajaran di dalam kelas. Strategi praktikal untuk mendukung pengajaran dan pembelajaran di kelas membaca dan menulis EFL tersebut, dan petunjuk untuk penelitian selanjutnya juga dibahas.Kata kunci: atribusi, pengajaran EFL, membaca, menulis

Abstract

Difficulties in understanding Arabic Balaghah is common among Indonesian students learning Arabic. One of the factors attributable to the difficulties is the different characteristics  of Arabic and Indonesia. This contrastive research aimed at developing more understandable materials for the study of Balaghah. The research used a quasi-experimental method. Abstract

This research aims to develop a literacy-based e-learning materials for graduate students by (1) describing the results of analyzing the syllabus, the teaching materials from course convenor, the students and the lecturers’ responses and developing the e-learning protoype material; (2) conducting an expert validation and a tryout; and (3) disseminating the product. Abstract

"> The research is aimed not only at the discussion on an interference ofIndonesian language into English language as shown in scientific journal abstracts butalso at the description on kinds of interference. There are 13 scientific journals that werestudied. The method applied in this research is descriptive with distributional andsimilarity analysis. The data is collected from abstracts of scientific journals during the year of 2003—2008. The results indicate that there are three kinds of interferences, namely: morphological, syntactic and semantic interferences. Morphology interferencehappens such as in verb form for the third person, plural form, and possessive. Syntactic interference includes the ill form of phrase and passive voice, paralellism, and the omission of to be and article. Semantic interference consists of addition and substitution

Abstract

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by brain injury. This study aimed at describing how the pragmatic process and forms on words and language phonemes of those suffering from global aphasia. The study is qualitative research using case study approach. The primary data on this study were collected by purposive sampling whose subject was a global aphasia sufferer who had obtained language rehabilitation during one-year period. The secondary data were taken by using in-depth interview with the family, therapist, and subject's neighborhood. The data were analyzed by comparing the in-depth interview result and the field notes of research. The result showed that the individual with global aphasia still had pragmatic abilities, although s/he could produce meaningless words and sounds. In addition, the individual with global aphasia used gesture and intonation to help convey the idea of her/his utterence. The gestures and intonations performed by the individual with global aphasia were nodding and shaking head, and moving hands; while the forms of intonation changes were sudden change in intonation, imitating sounds, and whisper.

Abstract

The aim for this researach is (1) to describe the needs analysis and challenges and (2) to produce the scaffolding draft model in learning writing using process ap-proach combined with the reflective maternal method (MMR). This research develop-ment applies R2D2 model which emphasizes users’ need based on the context (teacher-student with difable)  and developed collaboratively. Based on the needs analysis in the field in the first year, scaffolding draft model was produced using approach elaborated with the reflective maternal method (MMR).

Abstract

LANGUAGE EXPRESSIONS IN CONSTRUCTING PHYSICAL MASCULINITY IN INDONESIAN TEEN LITAbstract: Teen lit serves a central position in the conception of masculinity in teenagers due to its closeness to them as readers. For teenagers, physical masculinity is relatively highlighted compared to masculinity in other dimensions. Physical masculinity is expressed through classic names, which is related to strength, and is signified by ‘provincial’ names. Physical masculinity is also conveyed through the expressions of the eyes and figures. Pada masa remaja, maskulinitas fisik relatif lebih menonjol dibandingkan dengan maskulinitas pada dimensi lain. Maskulinitas fisik diekspresikan melalui nama klasik, yang dihubungkan dengan kekuatan, dan secara negatif dikonotasikan dengan nama yang “udik”. Maskulinitas fisik juga ditunjukkan melalui ekspresi mata dan figur.
