Abstract

Abstract: Lingga-Yoni artifact is found to be a part of various traces of Javanese civilization. The artifact was created and is still meaningful for Javanese society. Its meaning depends on the point of view taken. As a part of critical thought, there are several points of view selected to find the meaning of the lingga-yoni artifact, they are anthropological, formal-structural, mythological, philosophical, and positivistic. Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the various stereotypes, prejudices, and ethnocentrism which appeared in the character in the novel “Generation Golf”. The qualitative approach was applied in this research. Note reading technique was a technique used for data collection. The data analysis method was domain analysis. The result of the research indicates that there are kinds of stereotypes, prejudice and ethnocentric attitudes. Stereotypes appeared are learding to negative and positive kinds; kinds of prejudice appeared in the form of negative feelings, beliefs and actions; and ethnocentric attitudes are raised by attributing German’s culture with other nations

Abstract

This article examines the roles of fantasy and desire in the process of identity construction  as experienced  by Luh Sekar, one of the characters  in Oka Rusmini’s most notable work of fiction, Tarian Bumi. Employing Stuart Hall’s postulate on identity construction in critically reading the novel, it is found that the subject’s identity construction is highly influenced by her fantasy and desire of caste and gender - not only does caste structure women’s social location through rank and role, but that as part of the symbolic order it constitutes the women themselves.

Abstract

Correlation of eye movement patterns with reading comprehension abilityThis study aims to determine the relationship between eye movement patterns and reading comprehension skills. Data were collected from 20 participants during reading comprehension activities using the Tobii Eye Tracker. Hypothesis testing conducted using the Chi-square Test through Crosstabs analysis shows the value of Asymp. Sig. (2-sided) 0.788 > 0.05, which leads to a conclusion that Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected. Therefore, we conclude that there is no relationship between eye movement patterns and the reading comprehension ability among the participants. This is because eye movement patterns are visual technical in nature, while the ability to read comprehension is more likely to lead to one's cognition. Although there is no relationship between eye movement patterns and reading comprehension, eye movements can be used to identify cognitive processes during reading activities. For example, determining the time needed in the reading process, identifying the level of text familiarity, the reader's predictability, and a person's weakness in reading.Keywords: eye movement patterns, reading comprehension, reading skill, eye trackerKorelasi pola gerakan mata dengan kemampuan membaca pemahamanPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara pola gerakan mata dengan kemampuan membaca pemahaman. Pengambilan data terhadap 20 responden dilakukan pada saat aktivitas membaca pemahaman dengan menggunakan Tobii Eye Tracker. Uji hipotesis dengan menggunakan Chi-square Test melalui analisis Crosstabs menunjukkan nilai Asymp. Sig. (2 sided) 0,788 > 0,05, sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa Ho diterima dan Ha ditolak. Artinya, tidak terdapat hubungan antara pola gerakan mata dengan kemampuan membaca pemahaman responden. Hal ini disebabkan karena pola gerakan mata bersifat visual teknis, sedangkan kemampuan membaca pemahaman lebih cenderung ke arah kognisi seseorang. Meskipun tidak ada hubungan antara pola gerakan mata dengan membaca pemahaman, gerakan mata dapat digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi proses kognitif pada saat aktivitas membaca dilakukan. Misalnya, menentukan waktu yang diperlukan pada proses membaca, mengidentifikasi tingkat keakraban teks, kemampuan prediktabilitas pembaca, serta kelemahan seseorang dalam membaca.Kata kunci: pola gerakan mata, membaca pemahaman, kemampuan membaca, pelacak gerakan mata

Abstract

Andung-Andung (AA) ‘lamentation’ refers to sad feelings caused by the death of the beloved one in Toba Batak community. Lamentation consists of poetic expression and dominantly is recited by sad wives in expressing their deepest anguish, which makes the lamentation not easy to translate due to its specific features. The study was conducted to document and translate AA into Indonesian by using descriptive-qualitative method. The data were gathered through observation, recording, interviewing, analyzing contents and having a FGD. The data were analyzed by applying interactive analysis technique involving the theory of linguistic anthropology to interpret the meaning , content analysis, combined with meaning-based translation process  to reach idiomatic translation.

Abstract

Contextualizing extrinsic and intrinsic elements of short stories in Indonesian textbooks for primary school levelThe objective of this study is to look at learning indicators and contextualize extrinsic and intrinsic components in three Indonesian language textbooks for elementary school students. This study employs a qualitative research approach with a content analysis design to attain this purpose. The findings show that textbooks only use one learning indicator for each short story, although intrinsic (themes, characters, and messages) and extrinsic (social values, moral values, cultural values, and religious values) elements have been effectively balanced in the story. short. Although the results of this study do not represent any analysis of short story content in all primary school textbooks, they are highly valuable for students, instructors, and schools when selecting textbooks and short story content to utilize as teaching resources.Keywords: contextualizing, intrinsic, extrinsic, short story, textbookKontekstualisasi elemen ekstrinsik dan intrinsik pada cerita-cerita pendek dalam buku teks pelajaran bahasa Indonesia untuk tingkat sekolah dasarPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis indikator pembelajaran dan mengkon­teks­tualisasikan komponen ekstrinsik dan intrinsik dalam tiga buku teks pelajaran bahasa Indonesia untuk siswa sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini menggunakan pende­katan penelitian kualitatif dengan desain analisis isi. Temuan penelitian ini menun­jukkan bahwa cerita pendek dalam buku teks hanya menggunakan satu indikator pembelajaran untuk setiap tema, meskipun unsur intrinsik (tema, karakter, dan pesan) dan ekstrinsik (nilai sosial, nilai moral, nilai budaya, dan nilai agama) telah terakomodasi dengan baik dalam setiap bahan ajar dalam bentuk cerita. pendek. Meskipun hasil penelitian ini tidak mewakili analisis konten cerita pendek di semua buku teks sekolah dasar, namun hasil penelitian ini sangat penting bagi siswa, guru, dan sekolah ketika memilih buku teks dan konten cerita pendek yang akan digunakan sebagai sumber pengajaran.Kata kunci: kontekstualisasi, intrinsik, ekstrinsik, cerita pendek, buku teks

Abstract

Flipped classroom is an approach to learning to write that allows teachers to have one-on-one assistance to help learners in the “during writing” stage in the classroom. Theories are given to the students in a video lectures to watch before class. Because problems in writing mostly occur in “during writing” stage, teacher assistance is crucial. This paper aims to share theoretical review and research findings pertaining to the implementation of flipped classroom model to EFL writing. Research findings show that flipped classroom is able to give greater opportunities for interactive sessions in class which focus on the students’ own concerns, questions, and needs. Therefore, students’ difficulties in “during writing” stage can be minimized

Abstract

This study investigated the challenges and opportunities of formative assessment in EFL classes. It made use of qualitative research design by using indepth interviews to collect the required data. Three teachers and three students were involved as research participants in this study and they were intensively interviewed to get valid and reliable data regarding their understanding of formative assessment and the follow up actions they took after implementing formative assessment. The results of this study showed that the English teachers were found not to take appropriate follow up actions due to their low understanding of formative assessment. The teachers’ understanding could influence their ability in deciding the actions. This study indicates that EFL teachers need urgent further intensive training on the appropriate implementation of formative assessment and how follow up actions should be integrated into classroom practices Permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v45i12017p050

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan unsur lapisan sosial, bentuk perubahan sosial, faktor yang mempengaruhi perubahan sosial, dan proses perubahan sosial dalam novel Pencari Harta Karun dan Five on a Hike Together. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan ancangan penelitian sastra bandingan. Data penelitian ini adalah kata dan kalimat di dalam novel Pencari Harta Karun dan Five on a Hike Together yang menunjukkan proses dinamika sosial. Data penelitian dianalisis dengan menggunakan teknik intertekstualitas. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut. Pertama, menyangkut unsur lapisan sosial. Kedua, bentuk-bentuk perubahan sosial. Ketiga, faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi perubahan sosial. Keempat, proses perubahan sosial.
