This study investigated grammatical errors in sentences produced by EEMP students in their weekly written reflections in their Educational Psychology class. Fifty reflections of the first semester of EEMP graduate students were collected from assignments given by the lecturer of Educational Psychology class. Abstract

Rhetorical move structure of soft and hard science research article introductions by novice Indonesian authorsResearch article introduction is crucial in justifying a research topic and presenting the significant contribution of a study to the advancement of knowledge. Prior studies have attempted to investigate research article introductions from various viewpoints. However, the way novice Indonesian authors rhetorically construct their introductions is still under-explored. This study aims to explore cross-disciplinary introductions with regard to rhetorical move structure and the linguistic realizations of the moves. Employing Swale’s (2004) revised CARS model, a corpus of 10 research articles from the fields of soft and hard science were analyzed. The findings revealed that the two disciplines were in agreement on the compulsory status of Move 1 Establishing a territory and Move 3 Presenting the present work and the conventional use of Move 2 Establishing a niche. However, discrepancies arose in the step level. Regarding the linguistic features, soft and hard science authors preferred using present tense and active voice in realizing the moves. In addition, a considerable number of metadiscourse such as hedges and boosters were observed in the introductions. This study concludes that novice Indonesian authors’ disciplinary expertise possibly influences the quality of their introductions.

Abstract

This cross-sectional survey study investigates the preferences of freshmen and sophomores for corrective feedback in speaking instruction, which includes perception of corrective feedback, types of error to be corrected, timing of correction, sources of correction, and types of corrective feedback. Using questionnaire and interview to collect the data, the study found that the two groups welcomed the feedback, acknowledged the benefits of corrective feedback, but felt embarrassed when being orally corrected. Both the freshmen and sophomores wanted all their errors to be corrected. Whereas the freshmen preferred the grammatical errors to be always corrected, the sophomores preferred the phonological errors. With regard to the timing, the two groups expected their errors to be corrected after they finished speaking. Additionally, the two groups favored teacher feedback. Finally, regardless of the different types of errors, the most preferred feedback was explicit feedback, whereas the least preferred one was paralinguistic signal.

Abstract

Design paradigm and syntagm of woven bamboo packaging (besek)Abstract: Communication becomes a powerful means of cultural diffusion and an alternative choice for the community. Recently, modern society has been observed to be highly consumeristic, where the image becomes a consideration in the decision-making to purchase. Visual design on the packaging has an effect on consumers' purchasing decisions. The traditional woven bamboo packaging (besek) has an exciting phenomenon in modern society today (urban). The qualitative approach was used with narrative construction or textual descriptions of phenomena. Formal analysis and sign interpretation were used to answer research problems. The formal analytical method was used to identify the way syntagmatic shapes produce paradigms in meaning. The alternative modern packaging that follows the recent developments does not significantly replace the presence of besek as a medium to come to the collective memory of the target audience. Besek is a small part of existing past cultural products that compete with the modern packaging paradigm. Every past cultural product that successfully maintains its existence enables the establishment of an image and becomes a bridge to collective memory in the contemporary era. Keywords: paradigm, essence, memory  colective, design, packagingParadigma dan syntakmatik desain kemasan anyam bambu (besek)Abstrak: Komunikasi menjadi sarana difusi budaya, sekaligus alternatif pilihan bagi masyarakat.
