Abstract

The role of the New Zealand government in restoring peace and unity after the Christchurch tragedy is an important matter to study. What is unique about the role of the country's government is that its response is inclusive and flexible, focusing on healing and progress rather than revenge. This study uses qualitative analysis methods, including data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. Data was obtained through literature study and interviews or interactive discussions during Overseas Work Lecture activities. This study aims to provide a description of the government's role in restoring peace and unity after the tragedy. The New Zealand government's response involved collaboration between three levels of the conceptual approach to peacebuilding proposed by Lederach in 1997. These levels include the Top-Level Approach, the Mid-Level Approach and the Grassroots Approach. The findings of this study are that the government's response included the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Bill, which became the Arms Legislation Bill on 23 June 2020 the Governor-General formally signed the Bill into law, and the implementation of the Christchurch Call, while the community provided support and initiatives for mental health and solidarity. This article also suggests that Indonesia can learn from New Zealand's response and recommends implementing a national security law. This research emphasizes the importance of coordination and collaboration between actors at various levels in building peace and unity after a tragedy.

Abstract

The Multiliteracy Pedagogy Framework has been promoted to improve education in many countries; however, it is not popular yet in Indonesia. The framework relates to enhancing students' thinking skills. The other research indicated that the MPF did not positively affect students' critical thinking since the teacher did not have good knowledge about it; the teacher did not completely implement the four framework syntax in the teaching-learning process. The research, therefore, intends to reveal the implementation of the MPF for teaching critical thinking in the reading class of English Language Education (PBI) students. The research subjects are a lecture on the Reading subject and 20 students in the third semester at PBI Nahdlatul Ulama University of Sidoarjo (UNUSIDA). It is descriptive qualitative research using observation and questionnaire techniques to collect data. Descriptive statistics were used to generate summaries. The first implementation process is changing the lesson plan based on the multiliteracy pedagogy framework dimension. The activities are arranged in order from the cognitive functions in Multiliteracy; experiencing, conceptualizing, analyzing, and applying. The lecturer followed the syntax easily and completely. The result of students' assignments proves they can think critically about a text by giving comments supported with reasons, recommendations, data, conclusions, and evaluations.  Besides, the students enjoyed the instruction and responded well to the questionnaire, with 96,5% on average.

Abstract

Border areas are areas that are geographically directly adjacent to other countries. The border area is also one of the strategic areas, where the area that nationally concerns the lives of many people, both in terms of political, economic, social, cultural, and hankam interests. Border conflicts are usually particularly vulnerable if the contested territory has excellent natural and economic resource potential. The purpose of this study is to describe the factors that cause conflict and the urgency of boundary affirmation and describe efforts to resolve boundaries through regulation and non-regulation. The method used is a qualitative method with a type of descriptive approach through literature study. Based on the results of the study, it is understood that the settlement of Indonesia's border with Timor-Leste will be carried out peacefully, without the threat of violence, and with full respect for international law. This article seeks to understand the Indonesia-Timor Leste border dispute from the perspective of international relations. Three strategies can be taken by Indonesia to resolve this dispute, namely military confrontation, the use of formal institutions such as international organizations, and the use of informal institutions namely norms, beliefs, ideas, and values. This article argues that to resolve the dispute between Noel Besi/Citrana and Bijael Sunan/Oben it is not enough to rely on international treaties alone, Indonesia needs to put more emphasis on the importance of understanding the norms, beliefs, ideas, and values of indigenous peoples living in the disputed area. The role of the government in efforts to maintain the integrity of the country's territory through bilateral communication and cooperation can then be utilized by local actors to resolve conflicts and participate in defending the territory.
