Abstract

Reading is a fundamental language skill that enables individuals to acquire knowledge and improve their opportunities in life. Without strong reading abilities, people may struggle academically and professionally. However, many learners encounter difficulties when reading texts, especially those written in a non-native language. To overcome these challenges, educators need to apply effective teaching strategies and tools. This study focused on improving students’ ability to comprehend procedural texts at SMP Negeri 5 Manado by using ready-to-use graphic organizers. The research involved ninth-grade students divided into two groups: a treatment group of 27 students who used graphic organizers, and a control group of 26 students who were taught through traditional lecturing methods. The graphic organizers were designed to help students understand and remember the structure of procedural texts, including goals, materials or tools, and steps or instructions. A quasi-experimental design was used, with participants assigned through a lottery system. The study was conducted over eight sessions, and students’ performance was measured using pre-tests and post-tests focusing on content and language aspects. Data analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test showed significant differences between the two groups. The treatment group achieved a higher average score of 38.85 compared to 14.72 in the control group. These findings indicate that students who used graphic organizers demonstrated better comprehension of procedural text structures. Overall, the study concludes that the use of tailored graphic organizers is an effective strategy for improving students’ reading skills.

Abstract

In everyday life, identity is expressed through language, interaction, and communication patterns. This study investigates how discourse features shape Princess Sofia’s identity in Sofia the First. This study use Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Strategy framework. This study employed a qualitative research method with a discourse analysis design. The researcher selected Episodes 1–10 of Season 1 based on themes of identity formation and language use. The selected episodes were carefully observed to identify scenes that show character interaction, development, and situations related to power and politeness. After identifying relevant scenes, the researcher transcribed the dialogues. It producing around 450 utterances categorized into Bald-on-Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off-Record strategies. The findings show that Bald-on-Record dominates, reflecting Sofia’s assertiveness, leadership, and direct problem-solving style. Positive and Negative Politeness appear when Sofia builds relationships, expresses empathy, and navigates social boundaries, while Off-Record strategies emerge in delicate or indirect situations. Through CDA, Sofia’s discourse reveals not only linguistic choices but also the influence of narrative practices and social values such as kindness, equality, responsibility, and emotional awareness. This study contributes to discourse and linguistic studies by showing how politeness strategies in children’s animation construct social roles and power relations. It also highlights the role of media language in shaping children’s understanding of identity, gender norms, and social values, and provides insights for educators and content creators in developing more meaningful and responsible children’s media.

Abstract

Politeness strategies play an important role in shaping communication, especially in media where characters’ interactions reflect broader social values. While much research has examined politeness in everyday conversations, limited attention has been given to animated films, particularly non-Disney productions like Steven Universe: The Movie. This study investigates how politeness strategies and power dynamics are employed by the two central characters, Steven and Spinel, based on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory of politeness. Using a qualitative method (Creswell & Creswell, 2018), the researcher analyzed the movie’s transcript and identified 76 utterances containing different politeness strategies. The findings indicate that, within Brown and Levinson’s framework, Off-record strategies were used most frequently (27 occurrences), reflecting the characters’ tendency to express emotional conflict through indirectness and implied meaning. Positive Politeness (19 occurrences) appeared when the characters attempted to build solidarity and maintain relationships, while Negative Politeness and Bald-on-record strategies (15 occurrences each) were employed in situations requiring caution or direct confrontation. These patterns show how Steven’s empathy-driven language and Spinel’s insecurity-driven responses shape their power negotiation throughout the film. Overall, the study demonstrates that politeness strategies not only reveal character traits but also reinforce the movie’s themes of reconciliation, forgiveness, and personal growth.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) combined with a digital detox strategy and print-based cognitive scaffolding in improving the poetry writing competence of vocational high school students. Employing a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart spiral model, the study was conducted across two cycles with 15 Class X students of the Computer and Network Engineering (TKJ) program at SMK Negeri Inanwatan, South Sorong, Southwest Papua, Indonesia. Poetry writing competence was assessed across five indicators: diction, figurative language, rhyme and rhythm, theme, and moral message. Results demonstrated a consistent and significant improvement across all phases: the class mean rose from 68.49 (pre-cycle) to 73.05 (Cycle I) and reached 81.66 (Cycle II), while classical mastery improved from 20% to 40% and ultimately to 80%, surpassing the 75% success criterion. The digital detox strategy proved instrumental in eliminating copy-paste behavior and promoting authentic, observation-based literary expression. Three print-based scaffolding tools introduced in Cycle II (a Word Wall, a Figurative Language Pocket Book (Buku Saku Kiasan), and a curated poetry anthology) functioned as effective cognitive scaffolds that bridged students' technical-denotative language habits and the aesthetic-connotative demands of poetry. These findings demonstrate that literary creativity among technically-oriented vocational students is not inherently limited but is highly responsive to contextually adapted, structure-rich pedagogical interventions. The study contributes a replicable, resource-light instructional model for Indonesian language arts teachers in vocational education contexts.
