Abstract

This study aims to develop a test instrument to measure the high-level thinking ability of the two-variable linear equation system material. This research is a Research and Development using the ADDIE development model consisting of steps of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The test subjects in this study were students of class VIII of SMP Negeri 3 Payung. The instruments used in this study were validation sheets and documentation. Data collection techniques through expert judgment and tests. This research has succeeded in developing a test instrument to measure the high-level thinking ability of two-variable linear equations system material. The test developed consists of 10 multiple choice items and 5 description items that have been declared valid by expert judgment. The trial results show from the difficulty index analysis of multiple-choice questions was obtained as much as 1 item in the easy category, 9 questions in the moderate category, the analysis of the difficulty index for the essay obtained by 2 items in the medium category, 3 questions in the difficult category. In the analysis of discriminant index of multiple-choice questions, there were 1 question in the bad category, 3 questions with enough categories, and 6 questions in the good category. In the analysis of the difference in power, 2 questions were categorized as bad, 1 question was categorized as sufficient, 2 questions were categorized as good. Based on the analysis of the function of the distractor, it was found that 1 question was not functioning properly, 9 questions were functioning properly. Finally, from the reliability analysis, it was obtained 0.73 for multiple choice questions and 0.716 for essay questions with high reliability interpretation.

Abstract

Nyirih tradition is one of popular traditions in Indonesia, a country with a diverse ethnic groups, cultures, and languages. The traditions are potential to be explored and used as contextual learning materials. This research aims to analyze the relationship between science (physics, biology, and chemistry) on the use of Betel leaf in the Nyirih tradition. This research used an ethnoscience approach, an approach which raises various cultures in a society to become a science learning topic, so that it would be easier for students to integrate various material in science learning with the real-life  contexts. It was a qualitative research using the study literature type which consists of several steps, namely: (1) determining the topic, (2) gathering materials as references, (3) making an introduction, (4) determining the method, (5) discussing the findings, and (6) making a conclusion. The results suggest that the use of Betel leaf in Nyirih tradition could become an interesting topic in explaining several concepts in science.

Abstract

There are many classic questions about the nature of mathematics which have been an endless debate among philosophers. One of them is about whether mathematics is created or discovered. This research aims to find out the pre-service mathematics teachers perception about the classical enigma of mathematics after joining the course of history and philosophy of mathematics education. It was a descriptive qualitative research involving 45 pre-service mathematics teachers in their first-year training. We collected the data using questionnaire and then deepened the findings using semi-structured interview. The results suggest that 40% of the respondents believed that mathematics is created, while the rest 60% believed that mathematics is discovered. The two claims have their basic reasoning in the perspective of the respondents. Those who believed that mathematics is created argued that mathematics exists because of human activities. Therefore, it will never be founded if it is not created first. Meanwhile, those who believed that mathematics is discovered tended to argue that whether or not there is human activities to prove the mathematics phenomena, it is already there as the God created it. Thus, human just discovered it, not create it. Both arguments are interesting and have a potential impact to the mathematics education practice.
