Abstract

Republic of Indonesia’s Act No. 8 of 2016 recommends the guarantee for People with disabilities’ right to live, including education. It turns out that, on the other hand, most people with disabilities (pwds) in Indonesia live in vulnerable, underdeveloped, and poor conditions. Therefore, certain endeavours need to be done to realize the equal rights of pwds towards a prosperous, independent, and non-discriminatory life, through the establishment of a Disability Service Unit. Unit Layanan Disabilitas (abbreviated as ULD - Disability Service Unit) in the education sector is an important part of the Regional Government body (Provincial and Municipality) which functions as a provider of services and facilities for pwds. Hence, its presence is very important for the lives of pwds. Lembaga Pemberdayaan Tunanetra (LPT—Blind Empowerment Institute) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that is engaged in advocacy, education, and research related to disability. LPT has drafted East Java’s Governor Regulation and Surabaya’s Mayor Regulation regarding the Implementation of Inclusive Education as legal protection. Regarding this Disability Service Unit (ULD), Petra Christian University (PCU) has formed Unit Layanan Disabilitas dan Pengguna Khusus (abbreviated as ULDPK - Disability and Special User Services Unit) since April 12, 2017 in the PCU Library. This Services Unit has facilitated several users with special needs to try to borrow books, accessing library services, and was assisted by librarians, lecturers, and eight students in 2017. This effort was redeveloped again in April and May 2018 to share the importance of the Educational ULD and PCU Library’s ULDPK to various Provincial Offices, Municipal Offices, Non-Governmental Organizations, Special Schools, and Inclusive Schools for two weeks. This activity was very impactful in strengthening the concept of inclusive development, especially on increasing the awareness of various parties about the importance of Educational ULD in the City of Surabaya.

Abstract

This study was intended to uncover the challenges faced by parents in developing the social competence of their children with visual impairment who live in the community of sighted children, the results of which are expected to be used as the basis for developing a guidance and counseling programme to help them to meet the challenges. The study was carried out using the qualitative approach with the case study strategy; in-depth interview was used to collect the data; and the Social Attribute Checklist adapted from McClellan & Katz (2001) was used to portray the social competence profile of the children. The results of the study indicated that children whose parents were active in exposing them to their social environment and encouraged and supported them to enter a sighted peer group, had a high interest in interacting with their peers, were well accepted by the peer group, and were successful in developing friendship with sighted peers, and, in its turn, these children were also successful in showing a good social competence.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the process of changing living space in the Dayak tribes in Central Kalimantan, which is a complex phenomenon. The process of spatial discussion in Dayak settlements is useful in the planning and design process relating to housing and settlements, among others concerning environmental aspects, relocation, resettlement, urban renewal, and preserving local wisdom. This research is trying to develop the concept of change in living space that starts from a Dayak community value at the level of transition by using local material as a reference. The Dayak tribes in Central Kalimantan as the object of this study, specifically those in the large and small watersheds of Central Kalimantan as a reference, and field research as a research method. Asking research questions that arise is like asking whether the spatial discussion process is carried out on Dayak tribes in Central Kalimantan. The steps undertaken to answer the research questions are: first, finding the initial process of the Dayak concept of settling; second, to find the concept of changing space from non-permanent (nomadic) to semi-permanent (settled) and settlement. The results of this study contributed to the development of a revised architectural methamorphosis theory, such as questioning the settlement process of the evolving of Dayak tribes.

Abstract

The Straits Times 5th February 2021 with Bloomberg, John Hopkins University and Straits Times Graphics.

Abstract

Since development of information and communication technology, there have been many claims from learning technologists that role of educators will diminish and even end, but these claims have so far not been proven even though multimedia technology is increasingly sophisticated, where learning with the help of computer-based interactive media makes it possible for learners to carry out learning activities without help from others. In addition, learning models also provide support for increasingly individualized forms of learning, one of which is personilized learning, which gives every learner the opportunity to progress according to their respective speed and abilities. Psychology learning can be accessed anywhere and mastery of the material as desired without being constrained by the development of other students. Thus, the combination of sophistication of interactive multimedia technology and individual learning models reinforces the assumption that role of educators will end in future, therefore this paper examines whether these concerns are theoretically relevant.

Abstract

The duration of biology class for student disabilities at the Madrasah Aliyah level has decreased since the implementation of social distancing pandemic and online learning was implemented. This presents a challenge to improve learning by developing media so that madrasah students with disabilities have more time to study independently during the lockdown period. Therefore, the researcher wanted to compare the productivity of various learning media such as text, video and video-text combination. This research was conducted using a quasi-experimental post-test method by comparing the retention of madrasah students with disabilities before the science practicum between the intervention groups. This experimental research was conducted on madrasah students with disabilities who were randomly divided into 3 groups, text (guidebook), audiovisual and text-video combination. The videos and texts were prepared by the Biology subject teacher. The results showed that the mean score was 35.1 (text group), 58.1 (video group) and 85.2 (text-video combination group). Statistical analysis using Mann Whitney showed that there were significant differences in knowledge retention between the text and video groups and between the video and text-video combination groups. The conclusion of this study is the use of multimedia can increase knowledge retention in subject matter.
