Abstract

Diarrheal disease remains a significant public health issue among children under five, particularly in developing countries. Poor hand hygiene practices among caregivers, especially mothers, contribute to the transmission of infectious agents. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of health education on the proper six-step handwashing technique among mothers of toddlers in preventing diarrheal diseases. A community-based educational intervention was conducted in Banyumas Village, Langkat Regency, Indonesia, involving 27 mothers of toddlers. The intervention included lectures, demonstrations, and interactive discussions on diarrhea prevention and proper handwashing techniques. Evaluation was conducted through direct observation and participant feedback. The findings indicated an improvement in participants’ knowledge and skills regarding diarrhea prevention and proper six-step handwashing practices. Most participants were able to correctly demonstrate the handwashing technique after the intervention and showed increased awareness of hygiene practices. Health education on proper handwashing techniques effectively improves mothers’ knowledge and skills, which may contribute to reducing the incidence of diarrheal diseases among toddlers. Abstract

This Community Service (PkM) activity, titled “Education on the Prevention of Chronic Kidney Failure among the Community in Sei Limbat Village, Selesai Subdistrict, Langkat Regency, 2025,” was conducted to address the low awareness and interest of the community in preventing kidney failure, as reflected in their limited use of healthcare services and reluctance to undergo regular check-ups. A preliminary study showed that most respondents (6 out of 10) lacked knowledge about home-based prevention of kidney failure. To overcome this issue, the program provided free early detection of kidney disease, especially for the elderly, along with educational and counseling sessions delivered individually and in groups. Held on June 11, 2025, in Sei Limbat Village and attended by 26 participants, the activity generated strong enthusiasm, with participants actively engaging in discussions and demonstrating improved understanding of preventive measures. These outcomes indicate that the program effectively enhanced community knowledge and awareness regarding chronic kidney failure prevention.

Abstract

Optimal breast milk production is very important to support infant growth and development during the early stages of life. However, many postpartum mothers still experience difficulties in breast milk production due to several factors, such as stress, inadequate nutrition, and limited knowledge regarding breast care and proper breastfeeding techniques. One of the non-pharmacological methods that can be used to help increase breast milk production is Oketani massage. Oketani massage is a breast massage technique that can stimulate prolactin and oxytocin hormones, thereby helping to improve breast milk flow and making the breasts softer and more elastic. This Community Service Program (PKM) will be held in Mei 2026 aims to increase postpartum mothers’ understanding of the benefits of Oketani massage and its effect on increasing breast milk production. The method used in this activity consisted of health education and demonstrations of Oketani massage for postpartum mothers. The material was delivered interactively by providing explanations regarding the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, factors affecting breast milk production, and the correct steps of Oketani massage. In addition, observations were conducted on breast milk production through several indicators, such as breastfeeding frequency, infant urination frequency, infant calmness after breastfeeding, and infant weight gain. The results showed that there was an effect of Oketani massage on breast milk production in postpartum mothers with a ρ-value of 0.001 where ρ < α (0.05), indicating that Oketani massage was effective in increasing breast milk production. Through this activity, it is expected that postpartum mothers will be able to apply Oketani massage independently as a non-pharmacological method to help increase breast milk production, so that infants’ nutritional needs can be optimally fulfilled and support the success of exclusive breastfeeding.

Abstract

Menopause is a natural phase experienced by women aged 45–55 years due to the cessation of ovarian function, resulting in a decrease in the hormones estrogen and progesterone. This condition causes changes in reproductive, mental, and physical health that affect quality of life. Therefore, balanced nutrition is needed to keep their reproductive health, mood and physical endurance. If left untreated, this can reduce self-confidence and affect social and family relationships. This community service activity was held on May 13, 2026, in Hamlet 5, Patumbak 1 Village, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of balanced nutrition in maintaining the reproductive health of menopausal women. Education was conducted through lectures, discussions, and interactive Q&A sessions. The material covered understanding menopause, the physiological changes that occur, and the role of balanced nutrition as a promotive-preventive strategy. Nutrients emphasized included calcium for bone density, vitamin D for metabolism, protein for muscle strength, fiber for digestion, and phytoestrogens for reducing vasomotor symptoms. Results showed that participants were able to understand the concept of menopause and recognize the contribution of balanced nutrition in reducing symptoms and supporting reproductive health. Nutrition education has been proven to increase knowledge and encourage the adoption of healthy eating patterns, which play a role in preventing long-term complications such as osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. It is recommended that similar activities be carried out on an ongoing basis, involving local health workers and community leaders to strengthen awareness and program sustainability.

Abstract

Diarrhea remains a major health issue among children, particularly in developing countries, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality in children under five years of age. High incidence is often associated with poor sanitation, inadequate hygiene practices, and limited caregiver knowledge regarding prevention. This community service program aimed to enhance parental and caregiver awareness of childhood diarrhea prevention through interactive education and handwashing demonstrations in the working area of Puskesmas Deli Tua. The program was conducted on Saturday, January 7, 2026, involving 55 participants who were parents or caregivers of children aged 1–5 years. The intervention comprised health education on the causes and risk factors of diarrhea, the importance of sanitation, and hygienic practices, coupled with practical demonstrations of handwashing based on the WHO seven-step method. Visual materials, including posters, leaflets, and educational stickers, were used to reinforce participants’ understanding. Data collection involved pre- and post-intervention assessments of knowledge and attitudes, as well as observation of handwashing practices. Results indicated a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and skills; nearly all participants performed correct handwashing techniques and expressed commitment to consistently apply hygiene practices at home. These findings demonstrate that participatory educational approaches reinforced with practical demonstrations and visual aids are effective in promoting hygienic behavior and preventing childhood diarrhea. This program can serve as a model for community-based interventions aimed at improving child health outcomes in other areas with similar social and demographic characteristics.

Abstract

Immunization is one of the most effective efforts to prevent infectious diseases in children. However, public awareness regarding the importance of complete basic immunization is still relatively low due to lack of knowledge and misinformation about vaccine side effects. This community service activity aimed to increase public knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of immunization for children’s health. The activity was carried out in Patumbak I Village Dusun III, Deli Serdang Regency, involving 20 mothers with infants and toddlers as participants. The method used was health education through counseling, discussion, question and answer sessions, and distribution of educational leaflets. The educational material included the definition of immunization, benefits of immunization, immunization schedules, and the impact of incomplete immunization. Evaluation was conducted through direct questioning and observation of participant participation during the activity. The results showed an increase in participants’ understanding of the importance of immunization after receiving health education. Participants became more aware of the benefits of vaccines in preventing infectious diseases and understood that post-immunization side effects are generally mild and temporary. Participants also demonstrated positive attitudes toward the immunization program and expressed willingness to complete their children’s immunization schedules. The use of educational media such as leaflets and posters helped participants understand the material more easily. This community service activity had a positive impact on increasing public awareness and participation in supporting child immunization programs. Continuous health education is needed to improve immunization coverage and realize healthier children in the community.
