Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence and a global health challenge. Successful DM management depends heavily on patients' self-management skills, including adherence to medication, dietary management, physical activity, and blood glucose monitoring. However, low patient compliance remains a major factor contributing to complications and a reduced quality of life. Advances in digital technology offer opportunities to improve the effectiveness of health education through the use of accessible and interactive mobile applications. This Student Creativity Program (PKM) aims to optimize mobile app-based diabetes self-management education to improve adherence in diabetes patients. The method used includes the development and implementation of an application that provides diabetes education, medication reminders, blood sugar level recording, physical activity monitoring, and regular consultations and evaluations. The program targets outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Evaluation is conducted by measuring patient adherence levels before and after application use using validated instruments. The expected outcomes of this program are increased patient knowledge and skills in self-managing their disease, increased adherence to therapy and a healthy lifestyle, and the availability of innovative and sustainable digital educational media. Therefore, the use of mobile apps is expected to be an effective solution to support diabetes mellitus management and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Abstract

Generation Z is a group highly familiar with advances in digital technology, yet they tend to adopt unhealthy lifestyles. Habits such as consuming fast food, lack of physical activity, irregular sleep patterns, and high stress levels make their immune system vulnerable to weakening. Meanwhile, public understanding of the pharmacist profession remains very limited and is often merely equated with being a medicine seller in pharmacies. Therefore, this community service activity was conducted in the form of socialization regarding the role of the pharmacist profession and education on the use of local plants—ginger and turmeric—processed into an innovative herbal pudding as a healthy dessert to boost immunity among Generation Z at SMAN 13 Medan. The activity was carried out using interactive counseling methods, material presentations, group discussions, and direct demonstrations of herbal pudding production. The results show a significant improvement in participants’ understanding of the scope and actual roles of pharmacists, knowledge of the bioactive compounds and health benefits of ginger and turmeric as immune boosters, and highly enthusiastic responses toward the innovative product. Participants considered herbal pudding a more modern, practical form of preparation with a flavor preferred by young people compared to traditional herbal drinks. This activity is expected to raise health awareness among adolescents and encourage the utilization of Indonesia’s natural wealth as a base for developing beneficial healthy food innovations.

Abstract

Oral health is an important part of general health that needs to be instilled from elementary school age. low knowledge and proper understanding tooth brushing habits remains a major cause of oral health problems in children. This community service activity aims to improve oral health maintenance behavior and improve oral hygiene status through the 21-Day Toothbrushing Program for students at SD Negeri 084087, Sibolga City. The activity was carried out on 40 fourth-grade students using the methods of oral health education, demonstrations of correct tooth brushing methods, and mentoring for the 21-Day Toothbrushing Program for 21 days. Monitoring of program implementation was carried out through a WhatsApp group involving parents as mentors. Evaluation was carried out using a dental health behavior questionnaire and Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHIS) examination pre and post the program. The results of the activity showed that the majority of students aged 7–12 years (87.5%) and female (52.5%). The average increase in dental health behavior scores in the intervention group was 1.80 points, higher than the control group of 1.45 points. In addition, there was a decrease in the average OHIS score in the intervention group by 2.65 points compared to the control group by 2.05 points. Before the program, most students had poor dental hygiene status (80.0%), while after the program, most were in the good category (70.0%). The 21 Day Toothbrushing Program has proven effective in improving oral health behaviors and improving students' oral hygiene status. This program can be a sustainable promotive and preventive strategy to support the dental health of school aged children.

Abstract

Patient rights and responsibilities are essential components in achieving quality, safe, and patient-centered healthcare services. However, many people still have limited understanding regarding their rights and responsibilities while receiving healthcare services, which may lead to misunderstandings between patients and healthcare providers and affect the quality of care. This community service program aimed to improve public knowledge regarding patient rights and responsibilities in healthcare services at Sembiring General Hospital. The methods employed included preparation, educational interventions through lectures, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions, followed by evaluation activities. The educational materials covered patient rights, patient responsibilities, the role of patients in supporting patient safety, and interactive discussions. Evaluation was conducted using 12 questions administered before and after the educational intervention. The results showed an increase in participants' knowledge by 45%. Before the educational program, participants answered correctly an average of 6 out of 12 questions, whereas after the intervention, the number of correct answers increased to 12 out of 12 questions. The highest improvement was observed in the aspects of patient rights and patient responsibilities, with an increase of 50%. This program proved effective in improving public understanding of patient rights and responsibilities and is expected to support the enhancement of healthcare quality and patient safety at Sembiring General Hospital. Continuous educational efforts are needed to encourage active patient participation in patient-centered healthcare services. Keywords: patient rights, patient responsibilities, health education, patient safety, quality of healthcare services.
