Abstract

Language is the main tool in the human communication process, both in the formal and informal realms. In a multilingual society, the use of language is often not limited to just one language, but involves more than one language in a single speech event. This condition gives birth to various linguistic phenomena, one of which is code switching and code mixing, which often appear in daily interactions.  Markaz Al Arabiyah Al-Ittifaqiah as an institution that emphasizes the use of Arabic in daily life becomes an interesting social space to observe this phenomenon. In the conversation of students, it is often found that the use of two or more languages alternately or simultaneously is found. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of code switching and code mixing in the conversations of female students at Markaz Al Arabiyah Al-Ittifaqiah Indralaya. This study uses a qualitative approach with observation, interview, and documentation methods to identify forms of code switching and code mixing and the factors that influence them. The results of the study showed that the code switching that occurred in the Markaz Al Arabiyah environment was an external code transfer (Arabic, Indonesian, local language, and English), while the code mixing that occurred was in the form of the insertion of word elements, phrases, basters, repetitions of words, expressions, or inserts, as well as sentence levels into the main language (Arabic). Factors that affect the occurrence of code switching include: Speaker Factors, Communicator Factors, and Third-Party Factors. At the same time, code switching is influenced by the similarity of native language background, limited vocabulary, adaptation factors, and the habits and manners of the speaker. This phenomenon reflects the bilingualism of students in Arabic and is a challenge in the implementation of Arabic language policies in the educational environment. This research is expected to contribute to sociolinguistic development, especially in the context of Arabic language education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study examines how fans of the singer and celebrity Eaj (known as Jars) express affective stance through their lexical choices in responses to his humanitarian activism on X (formerly Twitter). When Eaj publicly voiced support for Palestine and Sudan, fans engaged actively through replies and quote tweets, displaying emotional alignment, shared values, and moral support. Using a qualitative discourse analysis approach, the study combines Hyland’s (2005) stance model with Du Bois’s (2007) stance triangle to identify attitude markers, evaluative language, and relational positioning. Thirty-three fan responses were selected from two threads related to activism, focusing on expressions of admiration, gratitude, empathy, and solidarity. The analysis reveals that fans not only evaluate the issues raised by Eaj but also position themselves as supportive, morally engaged participants, aligning with both Eaj and other users in the discourse. These affective expressions reveal how digital fandom can construct collective emotional meaning and reinforce parasocial bonds in activism contexts. While limited in scope, the study highlights the usefulness of combining interpersonal stance theory with relational stance analysis to understand the emotional meaning-making process in online fandom. The findings contribute to growing discussions on digital fandom discourse, demonstrating how linguistic choices serve as tools for expressing attachment, advocacy, and shared humanitarian concern.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of innovation and creativity in digital Arabic language learning, identify research gaps related to digital integration and self-directed learning pedagogy, and formulate a theoretical model for Digital Project Arabic Language Learning (DPAL), which combines technological innovation, teacher creativity, and the principle of learner autonomy. This research method uses library research. The results of this study propose an Arabic language curriculum design using the DPAL model, which can serve as a blueprint for religious education departments to develop digital, creative, and project-based Arabic language curricula. Theoretically, this study provides a conceptual framework for DPAL in Arabic language teaching. The gap identified by the researcher is the integration of the Independent Curriculum paradigm into the digital-based Arabic language learning design for its systematic implementation.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital media has significantly transformed language practices in urban societies, particularly through short video platforms such as YouTube Shorts, where communication is fast and dynamic. One phenomenon that emerging in this context is translanguaging, understood as the flexible use of multiple linguistic repertoires to construct meaning, negotiate identity, and manage social interaction. This study investigates translanguaging practices in a YouTube Shorts video featuring a senior automotive journalist discussing the Chinese automotive industry. Employing a qualitative approach with digital discourse and multimodal analysis, this research explores how translanguaging functions within short-form digital content and how it contributes to identity construction in an urban digital context. The findings indicate that translanguaging is not merely a linguistic strategy, but also a social and performative practice shaped by the affordances of short video platforms. It enables speakers to position themselves professionally, engage audiences effectively, and align with specific digital and interest-based communities. By situating the analysis within contemporary theories of translanguaging and sociolinguistic identity, this study demonstrates how language use in YouTube Shorts reflects broader dynamics of digital communication and globalization. The study contributes to digital sociolinguistics by highlighting the role of translanguaging in short video discourse and offers insights into how multilingual practices operate in emerging media environments.

Abstract

This study examines hegemonic power relations within intra-campus student organizations in Indonesia by analyzing senior–junior interactions as represented in satirical journalistic content published by Mojok.co between January 2024 and August 2025. Using a qualitative library research design and content analysis, the study is theoretically grounded in Michel Foucault’s concept of power–knowledge relations and Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony. The findings demonstrate that power operates predominantly through symbolic and discursive mechanisms rather than overt coercion, where seniority is constructed as a legitimate source of authority that enables seniors to define organizational norms and moral values such as loyalty, discipline, and obedience. These values are internalized by junior members through everyday discourse and organizational rituals, resulting in the normalization of hierarchical relations and the perception of domination as a form of consensus. The study concludes that intra-campus student organizations function not only as spaces for leadership development but also as arenas for the reproduction of hegemonic power, in which regeneration processes tend to perpetuate inequality by reproducing existing senior–junior hierarchies rather than fostering critical and egalitarian organizational practices.

Abstract

Beri Cinta Waktu is a drama series that aired on SCTV on October 16th, 2025. The series focuses on the life of Adila, who has to choose between two men as her true love: Trian and Rama. Due to its high rating, even from the first episode, Beri Cinta Waktu's popularity gradually increases, attracting a large audience. Since then, a fandom on social media has emerged, focusing on their interest in the drama series. The purpose of this study is to examine how fandom members utilize jargon and fan terms, including portmanteaus, acronyms, and terms created by fans themselves. The study will utilize a sociolinguistic theory developed by William Labov to observe language variations, slang, and fan terms in the Beri Cinta Waktu fanbase. The method used is a qualitative approach to assess the effectiveness of using jargon and terms within the fanbase, and also utilizes purposive sampling to categorize language formations. As a result, the three types of jargon are focused on being observed, including acronyms, portmanteaus, and specialized fan terms used in the Beri Cinta Waktu fandom. All will be analyzed structurally to find the contexts of the jargon. After all, it will be stated that the analysed jargons represent two separate objects: first, the representation of the objects in Beri Cinta Waktu, and second, the fandom elements themselves. All will be connected with sociolinguistic theory, and then concluded by the connection between the fandom and the relationship between the members themselves.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze VTuber community slang on Reddit utilizing digital ethnography. Specifically, this research aims to examine the formation and use of slang in VTuber communities. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach and purposive sampling. The data were collected from posts and comments on two subreddits, r/kurosanji and r/VirtualYoutubers, in text form. The data analysis was conducted utilizing Allan and Burridge’s slang theory. The researcher finds that the VTubers community utilized four categories of slang: acronym, clipping, flippant, and fresh and creative. Clipping, fresh, and creative are the most commonly used VTuber community slang, while acronym and flippant are the least used. The slang was used to create a sense of identity among VTubers. It is also used to label and offend members of VTuber subreddits and other groups. It also serves as a quick communication between members. This research contributes to the development of digital ethnography and further research regarding the VTuber community and its slang.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary speech acts in interactions between sellers and buyers at the Songgolangit Morning Market, Ponorogo. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the data were collected through audio recordings of natural conversations during buying and selling activities at six vegetable shops. The recorded interactions were transcribed and analyzed using a pragmatic framework based on speech act theory proposed by Austin and developed by Searle. The findings indicate that all three types of speech acts—locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary—appear consistently and simultaneously in market interactions. Locutionary acts function to convey literal information such as product types, quantities, prices, and personal narratives. Illocutionary acts are the most dominant, primarily realized through directives, negotiations, requests, and expressions that reflect the speakers’ communicative intentions. Perlocutionary acts are manifested through concrete responses and actions, including weighing goods, handing over items, giving price reductions, and completing transactions, which demonstrate the effectiveness of communication. This study confirms previous research that highlights the dominance of illocutionary speech acts in traditional market transactions. However, it also offers novelty by emphasizing the significant role of personal narratives and expressive speech acts in fostering social closeness and trust between sellers and buyers, which contribute to smoother transactions. The results suggest that traditional markets function not only as economic spaces but also as social interaction arenas rich in pragmatic practices. This research is expected to contribute theoretically to pragmatic studies, particularly speech act analysis, and practically to a deeper understanding of everyday language use in public spaces.
