Abstract

This study aims to develop an interactive digital learning media called Robot WAMPI (WhatsApp and Interactive Learning Media), specifically designed to improve early reading skills among students with intellectual disabilities. Using an R&D approach with the ADDIE model. This study involved six students with intellectual disabilities at the Banjarsari Special Needs School (SLB) who were selected purposively. Data were collected through questionnaires and tests, then analyzed using a Likert scale and the Wilcoxon test. Data sources came from media experts, material experts, teachers, and students. Validation by media and content experts showed high feasibility, with 98% and 97% validity scores, respectively. A practicality test by teachers yielded a score of 92%, indicating the media is user-friendly, engaging, and appropriate for the students’ characteristics. Furthermore, effectiveness testing significantly improved students’ early reading abilities. These findings confirm that Robot WAMPI is a valid, practical, and effective innovative learning solution for inclusive education in special schools(SLB).

Abstract

This article examines the forms of domination and marginalization of subaltern female characters in the novel Lail wa Qudhban by Najib al-Kailani, using a postcolonial literary criticism approach, especially Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's subaltern theory. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive method through critical reading techniques and textual analysis. The primary data in this research is the novel Lail wa Qudbhan by Najib al-Kailani. In contrast, the secondary data in this research are books, scientific works containing Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's postcolonial and subaltern theory, Najīb al-Kaylānī's biography and thoughts, and relevant references, both previous studies or research on this novel. Data collection uses documentation techniques, hermeneutic reading, and recording and classification of quotations. The data analysis technique uses descriptive-analytical. The results of the study show that the female character (Inayat) in the novel experiences structural and layered domination and marginalization, which originates from four main factors: (1) gender-biased interpretation of religious teachings, (2) customs that legitimize inequality, (3) social construction that silences women, and (4) negative stereotypes against women. The character of Inayat in the novel is presented as a subject who experiences symbolic and social limitations, but at the same time has hidden potential for resistance. This study emphasizes the importance of a postcolonial approach in revealing the layers of power hidden behind the representation of women in modern Arabic literature.

Abstract

The rise of podcasting has created new arenas for public intellectual discourse in Indonesia, characterized by unique interactional dynamics. This study investigates the pragmatic mechanisms that underpin these conversations, focusing on how communicative actions are performed and how interpersonal relationships are managed. Using a qualitative case study design, this research conducts a pragmatic analysis of the 'Endgame' podcast interview between host Gita Wirjawan and guest Maudy Ayunda. The study employs two key theoretical frameworks: Searle's Speech Act Theory and Brown and Levinson's Politeness Theory, interpreted through a contemporary lens. The analysis identifies the predominant speech acts used to construct the discourse and the politeness strategies employed to maintain face and foster a collaborative atmosphere. Findings indicate a high frequency of Assertive speech acts by Maudy Ayunda to establish expertise and present arguments, and Directive speech acts by Gita Wirjawan to guide the conversation. Crucially, these acts are consistently mitigated by sophisticated politeness strategies. Positive politeness (e.g., agreeing, showing admiration) builds rapport. In contrast, negative politeness (e.g., hedging, questioning, using indirectness) is employed to soften potentially face-threatening acts like disagreement or probing personal topics. This study concludes that the intellectual nature of the conversation is co-constructed through the content and a skillful interplay of speech acts and politeness strategies that allow for exploring complex and potentially sensitive ideas while preserving mutual respect and collaborative harmony.

Abstract

This study explores how deep learning (DL) technologies, particularly those integrated into tools such as automatic speech recognition (ASR), text-to-speech (TTS), and AI-powered pronunciation applications, can transform speaking instruction by introducing a new pedagogical paradigm. Through a qualitative, literature-based methodology, this research analyzes thirty peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2025. The findings reveal that DL tools significantly enhance learners’ pronunciation, rhythm, and fluency through real-time feedback and adaptive learning paths. In addition, these tools contribute to affective gains by reducing speaking anxiety and increasing learner motivation. However, challenges such as algorithmic bias, limited effectiveness in pragmatic discourse, and a lack of teacher training remain significant barriers to full integration. The discussion highlights the shifting role of TEFL instructors from content deliverers to facilitators of technology-enhanced learning environments. The study also emphasizes the importance of considering ethical implications and ensuring data privacy when implementing DL applications. Recommendations are provided for educators, institutions, and researchers to foster effective, equitable, and sustainable use of DL in language education. By bridging the gap between AI technologies and pedagogical practice, this paper proposes a forward-looking framework that positions deep learning not merely as a tool but as a transformative force in TEFL speaking instruction.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of politeness strategies in the Bahasa Inggris textbook for Indonesian twelfth-grade students. It aims to identify statements explicitly expressing politeness within the textbook’s conversation exercises. Considering the cultural significance of politeness in Indonesian society, particularly within educational settings, the study highlights the importance of integrating culturally appropriate communication practices into English language teaching (ELT) materials. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, six chapters (Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, and 14) were analyzed, resulting in 128 instances of politeness strategies. Among these, positive politeness emerged as the most dominant (50%), followed by negative politeness (25%), off-record strategies (11.7%), bald-on-record strategies (7.8%), and “Don’t do the FTA” (5.5%). The findings reveal that the conversational texts reflect Indonesian cultural norms by emphasizing respect, indirectness, and sensitivity to social hierarchy. This research evaluates ELT materials by promoting the integration of linguistically and culturally appropriate politeness strategies. It also encourages educators and textbook developers to prioritize politeness in instructional materials, enhancing students’ pragmatic competence in English communication.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of women in Donna Woolfolk Cross’s Pope Joan through the lens of Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism. The novel portrays a range of female experiences within a rigidly patriarchal religious and social system, making it a relevant and urgent site for analyzing how women navigate subordination, exercise agency, and construct resistance. This study aims to identify forms of women’s subordination, freedom, and resistance in the novel, and to classify the female characters according to Beauvoir’s typology: the Hetaira, the Narcissistic Woman, and the Mystical Woman. This descriptive qualitative study utilizes the text of Pope Joan as its primary data source, supplemented by secondary sources related to existentialist feminist theory. Data were collected through library research by reading, selecting, and classifying relevant excerpts. The analysis employed content analysis to identify scenes illustrating gendered power relations and women’s existential positioning, interpret them through Beauvoir’s concepts of immanence, transcendence, and otherness, and draw conclusions regarding the characters’ strategies of resistance. The findings show that Joan embodies the Hetaira who rejects immanence and pursues transcendence through education and critical reasoning. Gudrun and Richild represent the Narcissistic Woman, displaying limited and illusory autonomy shaped by patriarchal boundaries. Meanwhile, Gisla and Arn’s Mother exemplifies the Mystical Woman, fully internalizing patriarchal norms and accepting their subordinated role. These classifications reveal diverse existential responses toward patriarchy, and the novel also highlights that women’s agency emerges when they challenge imposed boundaries, affirming the relevance of Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism in literary analysis.
