Abstract

Women working abroad have become a significant phenomenon in Indonesia, prompting the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to issue a fatwa that regulates and provides guidance for those pursuing it. This study aims to analyze the positive and negative psychological impacts of women working abroad and propose solutions to address these challenges. Additionally, this study also analyzes the MUI fatwa regarding delivering female workers abroad. This article is a literature review using content analysis as a data analysis method. The results of this paper show that psychologically women who work abroad have a positive impact such as supporting their family's economic needs and contributing to the national economy. Meanwhile, the negative impacts include higher rates of divorce, mental health issues, neglect of childcare responsibilities, and the development of consumerist behavior and poor financial management. The way to overcome these negative impacts include establishing joint commitments, choosing legal and authorized agents, setting specific time targets for employment, and maintaining regular communication with family members. Therefore, the MUI fatwa regarding this matter is relevant, it is suggested that a clause on joint commitments, particularly for married women, be included to enhance its effectiveness.

Abstract

This study examines the reflection of masculinity and femininity in the Qur’an and its relationship to the personality of Prophet Muhammad and his beloved wife, Siti Khadijah, in providing role models for humanity. The method used in this study is qualitative. Data sources were obtained through a review of various journals, news articles, expert analyses, and related literature. Data analysis uses the interpretation of past and present scholars on verses related to the theme and opinions of scientists. This study focuses on the masculine and feminine traits in which many patriarchal societies view men as superior to women, even though this is not the case in teachings. Therefore, this study presents concrete evidence on the personalities of Prophet Muhammad and Siti Khadijah. The findings of this study include the definition of masculinity and femininity, the Islamic response to both, and the personalities of Prophet Muhammad and Siti Khadijah in practicing masculinity and feminism as a benchmark for humanity. This study concludes that men and women can possess masculine and feminine traits, in that women can have masculine characteristics and men can have feminine traits, provided that they are legitimized by Islamic law.

Abstract

Rifa'iyah women in Pekalongan managed to break free from constraints of patriarchal culture, enabling them to actively participate in the public sphere. Over time, they have initiated changes in their understanding and interpretation of religion, adapting these to contemporary developments. Their courage and consistency in these efforts have facilitated evolutionary adaptability within the social and cultural systems of the Rifa'iyah community, ultimately realizing complete freedom for women in public activities. This study employs the historical research method, encompassing heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The findings reveal, first, that Rifa'iyah women have driven societal change by challenging cultural norms through innovative interpretations of the Qur'an and Hadith. They also hold that their actions align with the teachings of K.H. Ahmad Rifa'i. Second, the social roles of Rifa'iyah women in Pekalongan include participation in the Wagean Islamic Study, establishing the UMRI organization, engaging in professional work, participating in activities outside the home, and being politically active. Moreover, Rifa'iyah women successfully balance dual roles by fulfilling their responsibilities as mothers and wives while collaborating with their husbands.

Abstract

This study examines how the media represents gender and non-normative sexual diversity groups based on news coverage of the ASEAN Queer Advocacy Week (AAW). A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing the critical constructionist paradigm and Entman’s framing analysis as the data analysis technique. Analysis of 20 news articles from five Indonesian media outlets revealed the following findings: detik.com, tribunnews.com, and cnnindonesia. com were unsupportive of the existence of gender and non- normative sexual diversity groups, whereas kompas.com and kumparan.com maintained a neutral stance on this issue. Media outlets employed religious, normative, and market-oriented perspectives in representing these groups in their news products. Four forms of stigma toward these groups were identified in media coverage: (1) contradictory to religion and morals, (2) deviance, (3) incompatibility with Indonesian law and culture, and (4) association with disease. Furthermore, not all media adhered to the Indonesian Press Council’s Guidelines for Reporting on Diversity Issues in their reporting on gender and non-normative sexual diversity groups. The media played a significant role in shaping societal perspectives on these groups through news coverage that led to widespread actions.

Abstract

There are many determinants of juvenile delinquency, one of them is technology. Technology is an integral part of modern society. However, misuse and uncontrolled use of technology may lead to negative impacts, one of which is juvenile delinquency. The objective of the study was to develop a determinant model of juvenile delinquency elicited from a path analysis. It was an observational study with a cross-sectional design. The sample size was 295 adolescents aged 12-19 years, consisting of adolescents at school and in the Juvenile Detention Centre (JDC). The data were taken a simple random sampling technique.. The analysis used Structural Equation Modelling. The determinants, which had a direct influence on juvenile delinquency were technology, peers, and lifestyle. Technology played a central role as the determinant that directly affected juvenile delinquency as many as 2.03 (203%). Digital technology may threaten adolescents as it can create and increase their delinquent behavior if its use is not controlled. The use of technology by adolescents needs to be supervised by parents and teachers together with nurses in community-based health practice.

Abstract

This article examines the construction of women's power within the context of Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren), using the film Hati Suhita as a case study. Employing content analysis and Mansour Fakih's theory of gender, this study explores the historical, social, and cultural influences on the perception of women's power. The film reveals that the construction of women’s authority in pesantren is shaped by both internal and external forces that have traditionally relegated women to subordinate roles. However, Hati Suhita illustrates that gender constructions are not fixed. The character Alina Suhita challenges traditional norms, presenting a compelling narrative in which women can occupy roles equal to men. The acknowledgment of women’s power in the film reflects a positive influence, particularly in education and leadership. The findings highlight the importance of transforming discriminatory gender constructs, a goal achievable through education, advocacy, and policy reform. This study provides significant insight into how gender dynamics in Islamic educational settings can evolve to support greater inclusion and empowerment.
The Terms Mahīdh and `azā in the Interpretation of Menstruation: A Maqāshid al-Shari’ah Analysis of Surah al-Baqarah (2: 222) Heryana, Esya; Sinta Hardiyanti Utami

Abstract

This study examines the meaning of mahīḍ and `azā in Surah al-Baqarah (2:222) as terms associated with menstruation. It applies a maqāshid analysis to find out the meaning behind i'tizal command and its benefits for both men and women.  These terms have often been used to justify the perpetuation of patriarchal values. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, drawing on classical and contemporary exegetical perspectives, including those of Muslim feminists, while also integrating a maqāshid al-sharī‘ah framework to uncover the intended wisdom behind Surah al-Baqarah (2:222). The study reveals that interpreting the term mahidh —as referring separately to time, location, or the menstrual process itself—has allowed space for the understanding of iʿtizāl fī al-mahidh as a general injunction to avoid women during menstruation. However, a more accurate exegetical reading indicates that the verse refers specifically to abstaining from sexual intercourse, understood as avoiding the site of menstruation. This restriction serves both as an expression of respect for women and as a form of regulation over reproductive health. Furthermore, the term `azā, when interpreted solely through a textual or literal lens—as filth, impurity, blood, or something objectionable—has contributed to social and religious exclusion of women during menstruation. In contrast, a contextual reading of `azā reframes it as a unique biological condition that involves physical and psychological distress. Under such circumstances, it is more appropriate to provide women with comfort, dignity, and recognition of their reproductive rights. Consequently, the objectives of Islamic law (maqāshid al-sharī‘ah), particularly the protection of religion (hifz al-dīn), life (hifz al-nafs), and progeny (hifz al-nasl), become more apparent when this verse is approached not solely through textualist readings, but also through contextual and purposive interpretation. A maqāshid-based analysis thus carries important implications for the physical and psychological well-being of women, and shapes the discourse on sexual ethics, gender relations, and spiritual agency of women in both private and public spheres.
