Abstract

Discharge activities on a cement vessel can’t be separated from the discharge pneumatic system, because the bulk cement contained in the cellar tank must be pressurized so that the cement turns into dust and can be unloaded into the land sillo. Failure of the pneumatic system will pose a risk of time delays and losses for the company because it can’t carry out load discharge activities. When the cement discharge activity takes place, there are many problems with the pneumatic system due to the decrease in wind pressure. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors, impacts and efforts made to analyze the effect of main pressure on the cellar tank in the cement discharge process to reduce the risk of delays in cement discharge activities. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Where is described and explained each problem with a detailed explanation. Data collection techniques with the method of observation, interviews with the chief officer and supported by the method of documentation. Damage to the pneumatic valve system causes reduced pressure in the cellar tank to be a factor in the decrease in main pressure. The impact of decreasing main pressure causes cement discharge activities to not be carried out optimally and can even hinder cement discharge activities. The conclusion obtained is that efforts need to be made to improve the skills of the crew on the operation of the pneumatic system and control, routines for the maintenance of the pneumatic system equipment according to the system maintenance plan.

Abstract

Centrifugal pumps at the PPSDM Migas Refinery play a crucial role in the continuous fluid transfer process. However, these components are prone to various problems, such as misalignment, bearing wear, and imbalance, which can cause serious damage to production downtime. This research aims to analyze the condition of the P100/3 centrifugal pump with a vibration data-based monitoring method. Measurements were taken using a vibration meter with reference to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 10816-3 standard on machine classification. Vibration data was collected from three main axes (axial, horizontal, and overhang) for four days to obtain the vibration pattern overhang as well as an indication of potential failures. The measurement results showed that at Non-Drive End (NDE) point 1, the average vibration reached 7.15 mm/s, which is included in zone D (danger), so immediate maintenance is required. Meanwhile, the Drive End (DE) 2, DE 3, and NDE 4 points are in zone B, which is still in the safe category, but still requires regular monitoring. In addition, temperature analysis showed an increase in motor and pump temperatures from August 12 to 16, which although still within reasonable limits, could potentially lead to overheating if not anticipated. Based on these findings, it is concluded that pump P100/3 requires immediate maintenance at point NDE 1, while pump P100/1 is still in a safe condition. Continued maintenance and monitoring recommendations are provided to prevent further potential damage and ensure optimal operational sustainability of the refinery

Abstract

The Reverse Osmosis Plant (RO) is a critical system for supplying freshwater on board ships to meet accommodation and operational needs. This study aims to identify the causes of reduced freshwater production in the RO Plant aboard the MT. Golden Splendor and to propose optimization strategies. A qualitative approach was employed through direct observation, interviews with engineering officers, and analysis of logbook data collected during a 12-month sea training period. The findings indicate that the main causes of inefficiency include clogged filters and membranes, leakage in the ejector pump, and inadequate routine maintenance. These issues led to a decline in freshwater production from 1000 liters/hour to 700 liters/hour. After corrective measures such as filter replacement, membrane cleaning, and pump repairs were implemented, production increased back to 1000 liters/hour. The results highlight the importance of scheduled maintenance and system monitoring to ensure optimal RO performance. The study recommends strict adherence to maintenance procedures and enhanced system supervision to improve efficiency and ensure the sustainability of freshwater production on board.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of entrepreneurial spirit and selling practices on the business motivation of maritime students. The background of this study is based on the low motivation of students to become entrepreneurs due to limited practical experience and the lack of internalization of entrepreneurial values in maritime education. The study used a quantitative approach, with 65 students in the maritime education study program in Semarang City as respondents. Data collection was conducted using a closed-ended questionnaire, and data analysis used simple and multiple linear regression with the help of SPSS version 26. The results showed that entrepreneurial spirit significantly influenced selling practices (R² = 84.2%) and business motivation (R² = 84.2%). Furthermore, selling practices also significantly influenced business motivation (R² = 65.7%). Multiple regression showed that entrepreneurial spirit (β = 0.640) and selling practices (β = 0.101) simultaneously contributed to business motivation with a strong correlation (R = 0.747). These findings emphasize the importance of an action-based learning approach in entrepreneurship education to improve the entrepreneurial readiness and spirit of maritime students.

Abstract

Air conditioning (AC) systems play a crucial role in maintaining thermal comfort within ship accommodation spaces, especially during operations in tropical climates. However, the use of refrigerants such as R32 raises environmental concerns due to its relatively high Global Warming Potential (GWP). This study aims to analyze the impact of retrofitting 40% by mass of R290 into a 1-HP split AC system originally designed for R32, focusing on the resulting compression ratio and cooling performance. The experimental method involved varying the inlet air temperatures to the evaporator (23°C, 25°C, and 27°C) and condenser (30°C and 35°C). Suction and discharge pressures of the compressor were measured to calculate the compression ratio. The results showed that R32 yielded the highest compression ratio of 3.09 and the lowest at 2.87, while R290 produced a maximum of 2.86 and a minimum of 2.60. These differences reflect the influence of each refrigerant’s thermodynamic properties on compressor operation. R290 demonstrates potential as an environmentally friendly alternative for marine air conditioning systems, although technical adjustments are required to maintain optimal system performance.

Abstract

Oil tankers are a type of vessel specifically designed to transport oil or its derivatives. One of the preventive safety measures employed on these ships is the inert gas system—a system that generates gas with low oxygen content to prevent explosions onboard. However, an increase in oxygen concentration in the inert gas is a common issue encountered, which makes optimizing the performance of the inert gas system a matter of serious concern. The methodology adopted in this research is descriptive qualitative, with the inert gas system aboard MT. NORDDOLPHIN serving as the primary research object. Data collection was carried out through several approaches, including direct field observation, interviews with relevant personnel, and a literature review of technical documents such as instruction manuals and standard operating procedures (SOP) available on the vessel. The study demonstrates that the rise in oxygen content in inert gas is caused by inadequate maintenance of the fuel oil control valve and a dirty main burner, which leads to an imbalance in the combustion ratio. The effort undertaken to keep the oxygen level below the threshold of 4% involves lowering the correction factor on the boiler. This adjustment increases the fuel supply during combustion, which in turn raises the carbon dioxide concentration and lowers the oxygen level in the inert gas

Abstract

The optimization of cargo loading processes plays a crucial role in maritime logistics operations. This study is focused on examining jumbo bag loading procedures aboard MV Royal Glory, identifying various influencing factors, and establishing management methods for damaged jumbo bags. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, data was collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation during sea practice. Research findings show that while loading procedures are systematically structured, their effectiveness remains limited as they rely on manual calculations and crew expertise without technological support. Three primary constraints identified include human resources, equipment and facilities, and cargo materials. Although measures for handling damaged jumbo bags have been implemented, preventive actions have not yet been adopted. This situation leads to reduced operational time efficiency and heightened occupational safety risks.
