Abstract

This study examines irony in the novel Teruslah Bodoh Jangan Pintar by Tere Liye using a cognitive semantic approach. The research aims to explore the meanings and functions of irony within the novel. Through content analysis, three types of irony were identified: verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony. A total of 10 data points were analyzed, consisting of 3 instances of verbal irony, 6 instances of dramatic irony, and 1 instance of situational irony. Verbal irony appears when the author employs words that contradict their actual meanings, as seen in dialogues that convey subtle yet sharp sarcasm. Situational irony is evident in the disparity between the hopes and realities faced by the characters, such as the failure to attain happiness despite their hard efforts. Dramatic irony occurs when the reader is aware of information unknown to the characters, adding depth to the narrative. The findings of this study reveal that the irony in this novel not only enriches the narrative meaning but also serves as a tool for social critique regarding the depicted situations. Keywords: irony, cognitive semantics, novel, social critique

Abstract

The novel "Senja in Jakarta" depicts the political, social and economic life of Indonesian society in the era of Liberal Democracy and Guided Democracy, especially in Jakarta during the 1950s. This novel depicts the dirty political practices of manipulators, fraudsters and corrupt officials in Jakarta against the background of the lives of ordinary people. This research aims to describe the social conflicts contained in the novel, namely realistic and non-realistic conflicts as well as the positive function of these social conflicts. Realistic conflict arises from dissatisfaction or disappointment experienced by individuals or groups with a system or demands in social relations. On the other hand, non-realistic conflicts are driven by irrational and ideological desires. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with a literary sociology approach. The data used in this research are text excerpts in the form of dialogues, monologues and narratives that describe social conflicts in the novel "Senja in Jakarta". The data collection instruments used were documentation and observation using reading and note-taking techniques. The data analysis process includes repeated reading, highlighting, documentation, and data analysis using Lewis A. Coser's social conflict theory. Then, four realistic social conflict data were found, consisting of two data related to hostile feelings, and two data related to hostile behaviour, two data on unrealistic social conflict, and two data on the positive function of social conflict. This research connects the depiction of social conflict in the novel "Senja in Jakarta" with the reality of Indonesian society in the 1950s, thereby showing that conflict, both realistic and non-realistic, will give rise to functions that shape the social structure and identity of Indonesian society in the 1950s.Keywords: Novel Twilight in Jakarta, Sociology of Literature, Social Conflict

Abstract

This study aims to analyze code switching and code mixing events in the coastal community of Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi, West Java. Using a descriptive-qualitative research method, data were collected through observation and semi-structured interviews with research subjects, namely fishermen and traders around Pelabuhan Ratu. The data samples were 4 fishermen at the Fish Auction Market and 2 traders at the Traditional Market. The results showed that there were 21 internal code switching events with 18 events in fishermen and 3 events in traders. The significant difference in frequency between the code switching data of fishermen and traders was caused by differences in the background of the research subjects. This affected the speech of indigenous fishermen so that many code switching events occurred, while traders were indigenous people who had lived in Pelabuhan Ratu for a long time. Meanwhile, 37 code mixing events were found consisting of 4 code mixing in the form of words, 22 code mixing in the form of phrases, and 11 code mixing in the form of clauses. Based on these data, code switching events generally occur when speakers adjust their language to their conversation partners, while code mixing occurs because of the speaker's habit of mixing the use of Indonesian and Sundanese in everyday conversation. This study implies that the coastal community of Pelabuhan Ratu is a bilingual community that actively uses Indonesian and Sundanese in everyday communication. This finding can contribute to the development of sociolinguistic studies in other coastal areas. In addition, it can also be a suggestion and input for educational institutions to develop policies on the use of Indonesian in public spaces and the maintenance of local languages in the Pelabuhan Ratu area. Keywords: code switching, code mixing, bilingual speakers, coastal community linguistics, language maintenance

Abstract

Climate change poses a critical global challenge that demands effective adaptation and mitigation strategies. This study examines the role of piil pesenggiri, with a focus on the sakai sambayan value, within the Lampung community’s cultural framework as it relates to climate change mitigation policies. Employing a qualitative, postcritical ethnographic approach, the research analyzes sakai sambayan as a form of cultural wisdom with implications for climate adaptation, using data from observations and interviews with community members in Margakaya Village, Pringsewu, Lampung. The findings reveal that sakai sambayan a locally grounded approach based on collective cooperation supports practical climate mitigation activities, especially in flood prevention, although these efforts are primarily driven by community initiative rather than formal policies. This research contributes to the field of anthropology by uncovering novel insights into how local wisdom informs public policy processes and implementation in climate change mitigation, underscoring the importance of integrating indigenous values in sustainable environmental governance. Keywords: piil pesenggiri, sakai sambayan, climate change policy

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find translation techniques and the types of collocation in the novel A Child Called ‘It’: Once Child’s Courage to Survive. The limitation in this research is only to examine the analysis of collocation translation. The gap of this study is that there is still a misunderstanding in translating collocation and investigating how collocation is actually translated. This research used the theory of Molina and Albir (2002) for the technique of translation and the theory of McCarthy and O‘Dell (2017) for the collocation. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collocations in the novel A Child Called ‘It’: Once Child’s Courage to Survive in two versions, English as the source text and Bahasa Indonesia as the target text. From 18 techniques. There are 11 techniques applied in the data, which are adaptation, amplification, borrowing, calque, description, discursive creation, established equivalent, literal translation, modulation, reduction, and variation. In addition, there are six types of collocation found, which are adjectives and nouns, nouns and verbs, nouns and nouns, verbs and expressions with prepositions, verbs and adverbs, adverbs and adjectives. This research is expected to be useful for further research and could help improve understanding in translation. Keywords: translation, translation technique, collocation

Abstract

Language is a communication system using symbols in the form of words, sentences, and signs to convey thoughts or feelings between one human being and another. With language, Javanese people often utter figurative sentences that have a specific purpose. These figurative sentences are traditional Javanese expressions that are often used as satire, advice, ridicule, and so on. In this study, the author explains the forms and functions of traditional Javanese expressions in Javanese short films. In addition to daily face-to-face activities, traditional expressions can also be found through audio visuals such as YouTube content which of course has the intent and purpose of expressing advice, satire, reminders, and so on. This study uses Ferdinand De Saussure's semantic theory (1966). This data collection uses the free conversation listening technique. Data was obtained by listening to the content on the Paniradya Kaistimewaan YouTube channel in a short film entitled Pitutur 2, Latar, and Dalan Rejeki. This study produced seven data consisting of three forms of traditional Javanese expressions and 3 functions of traditional Javanese expressions. This study aims to reveal the preservation of culture, especially in the form of traditional Javanese expressions. It is expected from the author that readers can grow an understanding of the existence of forms and functions of traditional Javanese expressions and grow awareness of the importance of culture in community life. Keywords: Language, Traditional Expressions, Forms, Functions

Abstract

This Campus Short Story Collection is a persuasive approach in character education, where a college environment can drill various student problems regarding their personal and environmental issues, regarding academic and non-academic issues, through the approach of a literary work, so that it gives rise to a positive mental attitude, namely pouring out the difficulties faced through a work, namely writing campus short stories. Concretely, the purpose of writing a Campus Short Story anthology collaboratively is to find out how to write a Campus Short Story anthology collaboratively, what results are achieved, what concepts are found, and what obstacles are faced in writing a Campus Short Story Collection collaboratively. The results of this study are an anthology of short stories written with full feeling by the authors because they relate to the problems they are facing. The authors realize that they should not get caught up in a problem but can continue to work, for example through writing a short story that can reflect something from whatever is faced. Keywords: Anthology, Short Story, Campus

Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between physical structure and inner structure in the poem Kangen by W.S. Rendra which is included in the book Empat Kumpulan Sajak in the Malam Stanza section, so that the study can contribute to literary studies by providing additional insight into the poet's interpretation in conveying the contents of the poem 'Kangen' which tells about his love for his wife, especially in the Malam Stanza section. By using a qualitative descriptive method, this study uses reading and note-taking techniques to analyze data in written form. Structural theory is applied to describe the elements of poetry, especially the physical and inner structures. This allows for a better understanding of the meaning of the poem without referring to external factors. The includes the use of connotative diction, figures of speech such as metaphors, hyperbole, and repetition, concrete words, similes, and low-pitched rhymes or rhythms. In addition, typographic aspects such as the use of capital letters and complete punctuation are also analyzed. The inner structure includes emotions, tones, themes, and moral messages conveyed in the poem. These two structures do not stand alone but complement each other so as to provide depth of meaning. The relationship between physical and spiritual structures arouses the reader's emotions, allowing them to understand and appreciate the contents of the poem more deeply. In conclusion, the meaning of the poem 'Kangen' as a whole is formed by the integration of physical and spiritual structures. The results of this study are expected to deepen the understanding between the structure of poetry and the meaning contained therein, as well as add a new descriptive perspective that has not been found in previous studies so that it can inspire other writers and poets in composing poetry. Keywords: Malam Stanza, Structural Approach, Poetry, W.S Rendra
