Abstract

Ecofeminism views that exploitation of nature is directly proportional to men's oppression of women. This study aims to present some forms of nature and women relations contained in the novel Dlumū Lā Tajiffu by Byar Rufael. The data of this research is in the form of sentences from the novel Dlumū Lā Tajiffu related to the relation between nature and women. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. The approach applied in this research is the relationship between nature and women from the perspective of ecofeminism. The data collection techniques used include the documentation method with reading and recording techniques, and through two data analysis techniques, namely identification and analysis. The results of this study show that the novel Dlumū Lā Tajiffu by Byar Rufael represents the relationship between nature and women in (1) the depiction of the image of nature and women symbolized as a sacred entity, namely the mother. (2) the oppression of nature and women by patriarchal-capitalists such as As'ad Syahdan makes it difficult for villagers to get water. Keywords: Ecofeminism, Women, Ecology, Ecocritism

Abstract

Listening is one of the key receptive skills, essential for capturing the meaning of spoken language. Developing listening skills requires frequent practice with English language inputs. Various accessible media, such as YouTube videos and podcasts, provide valuable resources for enhancing these skills. However, while media play an important role, teaching methods and techniques are equally critical to success. Many S1 Language Education students still struggle to meet the expected standards in listening proficiency. A pre-survey conducted by the researcher, involving a pre-test on students' listening skills, revealed results that were below the expected benchmark. Given this, the Shadowing Technique was introduced to help improve students' listening abilities. This study aims to examine whether there is a significant improvement in students' listening skills after being taught using the Shadowing Technique, which is supported by technology-based learning media like YouTube and podcasts. The research employed a pre-experimental quantitative method, using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 27 second-semester students from the English Education Study Program at FKIP, University of Lampung, who were enrolled in advanced listening courses. The findings revealed a notable improvement in students' listening skills after using the Shadowing Technique. This study highlights the challenges students face in improving their listening skills, especially the difficulty in understanding spoken English due to limited exposure and practice. Additionally, it suggests that incorporating technology-based media alongside effective teaching techniques can lead to significant improvements in listening proficiency. Specific indicators of improvement include increased comprehension accuracy and enhanced ability to follow and replicate spoken English. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential of shadowing in language learning. Keywords: Listening. Shadowing Techniques, Technology-Based Learning Media, Education

Abstract

In interacting and communicating, the use of language plays a very important role. However, there are still many who experience misunderstandings in communicating in everyday life. This is due to the very broad scope of language meaning, as well as differences in language styles between individuals. There are various factors that influence this difference, such as environment, education level, gender, and so on. The purpose of this study is to identify a difference in language style between men and women. Based on the results of observations made by researchers, compared to men, women tend to look very expressive. In this study, it can be seen that there are differences in language between men and women. In terms of social position, it seems that men dominate women. Men have the freedom to speak directly, while women often do not. Men can interrupt conversations and use harsher language, while women are expected to maintain politeness and be gentle in speaking. This finding has significant implications for everyday social interactions. Differences in language styles for men and women can cause misunderstandings and tensions in interpersonal communication. In a broader context, this communication pattern reflects and reinforces gender inequality in society. This can impact power dynamics in the workplace, personal relationships, and participation in public spaces. Further research is needed to explore strategies that can bridge this communication gap and promote equality in verbal interactions between genders. Keywords: Sociolinguistics, Language, Gender

Abstract

Arabic has an important role in global communication, including in the economic field. This is due to the rapid economic development of the Middle East which emphasizes the importance of mastering the Arabic language. One of the books that is a resource for learning Arabic for economic purposes is "Arabic Book for Special Purposes: Arabic for Economy" written by Dony Handriawan (2022) and published by Eureka Media Aksara. This study aims to analyze the quality of the book based on the 5C standard, identify aspects of the book that need to be strengthened based on the theory of the 5C standard, and provide recommendations to improve the quality of Arabic books for economic purposes. This research is literature research and uses content analysis techniques by paying attention to the instruments in the 5C standard. The results of this study show that the "Arabic Book for Special Purposes: Arabic for Economy" has met most of the standards in language teaching, especially in the aspects of communication, connections, comparisons, and communities. However, the book lacks emphasis on the cultures aspects of the Middle Eastern economy, which is an important area in learning Arabic for economic purposes. This lack of emphasis on the culture of the Middle Eastern economy is a gap between existing textbooks and international standards. Keywords: Arabic for Special Purposes, Arabic for Economic Purposes, Arabic Book Analysis, 5C Standards

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore efforts to preserve the art of karawitan through extracurricular programs at SMA 1 Padang Panjang, with a specific focus on the use of the traditional musical instrument Pupuik Batang Padi. Karawitan, which includes traditional music and other traditional instruments, holds significant philosophical, aesthetic, and spiritual values within Indonesian culture. However, the influence of globalization and popular culture poses a threat to the existence of this art form among younger generations. This research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing techniques such as observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of extracurricular activities. The results indicate that teaching karawitan through the making and playing of Pupuik Batang Padi not only enhances students' technical skills but also fosters a sense of pride and responsibility towards their cultural heritage. The program has proven effective in strengthening students' cultural identity, instilling values of mutual cooperation, discipline, and respect for nature. Moreover, the program contributes to the preservation of Minangkabau traditional arts, with students actively bringing their skills into the public sphere by participating in local cultural events. These findings underscore the importance of integrating traditional arts into education as a medium for cultural preservation and character development in the face of globalization challenges. Keywords: Extracurricular, Karawitan, Cultural Preservation, Pupuik Batang Padi

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of blog-based partuturon materials in enhancing cultural literacy among students at SD Negeri 200309. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) methodology, focusing on product development and effectiveness evaluation in an educational context. The research on blog-based partuturonprovides significant benefits in enhancing cultural literacy by combining the richness of local traditions with modern technology. Through an interactive and easily accessible blog platform, students can learn and appreciate partuturon concepts in a more engaging and relevant manner to their daily digital lives, while simultaneously preserving cultural heritage in a format accessible to future generations. The sample consisted of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 200390 Purwodadi. Data collection involved pretest and posttest assessments to measure learning outcomes before and after implementing the blog-based materials. Data analysis utilized N-gain calculations to determine the improvement in student performance. Results demonstrated that the developed blog-based partuturon materials effectively enhanced student learning outcomes, with an N-gain of 57% between pretest and posttest scores, indicating a "medium" category improvement. This significant difference in average scores validates the effectiveness of the blog-based approach in improving students' cultural literacy. This means that these results could lead to the development of technology-based curriculum for other cultural subjects, such as traditional arts, local languages, or local history, thus creating an integrated and interactive learning model that can increase student engagement and cross-cultural understanding at different levels of education. Keywords: cultural literacy, blog-based learning, partuturon, elementary education, R&D methodology

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pattern of subject ellipsis in the clauses of Denny Caknan’s song lyrics. Ellipsis is a linguistic phenomenon in which a word or linguistic unit is not explicitly mentioned, but its meaning can be understood from the context. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research collects data through the listening method and note-taking technique, which are then analyzed using techniques such as direct element division, inversion, ellipsis, and substitution. The findings indicate that subject ellipsis in these lyrics results in a more concise and effective narrative, although it requires contextual understanding from the listener. The listener’s understanding of subject ellipsis is highly dependent on the context of the preceding lyrics and their ability to fill in the missing syntactic elements, making them an active part of the interpretation process. These findings are expected to enrich linguistic studies on ellipsis and contribute to further research on subject ellipsis. Keywords: ellipsis, syntax, pragmatics, song lyrics, Denny Caknan
