Abstract

This study aims to enhance the culture of critical thinking in high schools by identifying the reasoning techniques used by students in written argumentative texts. Employing a qualitative approach with discourse analysis as the theoretical framework, this research investigates how students construct arguments in their writing assignments. Data collection involved analyzing these assignments to identify reasoning techniques. This study identifies four argumentation patterns used by high school students in argumentative writing: (1) C-G-B, (2) C-G-W-B, (3) C-G-B-MQ, and (4) C-G-W-B-MQ, as well as three argumentation techniques: (1) argumentation with examples, (2) argumentation with authority, and (3) argumentation with cause. The C-G-B and C-G-W-B patterns promote analysis, while the C-G-B-MQ and C-G-W-B-MQ patterns encourage synthesis. These argumentation techniques help students evaluate, strengthen logical thinking, and analyze cause-and-effect relationships. Recommendations for enhancing critical thinking skills and character development include incorporating these argumentation patterns into teaching materials and facilitating the learning of diverse argumentation techniques. Keywords: critical thinking, character development, argumentative reasoning, high school students

Abstract

Climate change poses a critical global challenge that demands effective adaptation and mitigation strategies. This study examines the role of piil pesenggiri, with a focus on the sakai sambayan value, within the Lampung community’s cultural framework as it relates to climate change mitigation policies. Employing a qualitative, postcritical ethnographic approach, the research analyzes sakai sambayan as a form of cultural wisdom with implications for climate adaptation, using data from observations and interviews with community members in Margakaya Village, Pringsewu, Lampung. The findings reveal that sakai sambayan a locally grounded approach based on collective cooperation supports practical climate mitigation activities, especially in flood prevention, although these efforts are primarily driven by community initiative rather than formal policies. This research contributes to the field of anthropology by uncovering novel insights into how local wisdom informs public policy processes and implementation in climate change mitigation, underscoring the importance of integrating indigenous values in sustainable environmental governance. Keywords: piil pesenggiri, sakai sambayan, climate change policy

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find translation techniques and the types of collocation in the novel A Child Called ‘It’: Once Child’s Courage to Survive. The limitation in this research is only to examine the analysis of collocation translation. The gap of this study is that there is still a misunderstanding in translating collocation and investigating how collocation is actually translated. This research used the theory of Molina and Albir (2002) for the technique of translation and the theory of McCarthy and O‘Dell (2017) for the collocation. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collocations in the novel A Child Called ‘It’: Once Child’s Courage to Survive in two versions, English as the source text and Bahasa Indonesia as the target text. From 18 techniques. There are 11 techniques applied in the data, which are adaptation, amplification, borrowing, calque, description, discursive creation, established equivalent, literal translation, modulation, reduction, and variation. In addition, there are six types of collocation found, which are adjectives and nouns, nouns and verbs, nouns and nouns, verbs and expressions with prepositions, verbs and adverbs, adverbs and adjectives. This research is expected to be useful for further research and could help improve understanding in translation. Keywords: translation, translation technique, collocation

Abstract

The existence of benbepon according to stories circulating for generations began with Chinese traders who came to eastern Indonesia, especially on Biak Island, Papua. History proves that before the 15th century, Papuans had already established relationships with foreign nations such as traders from China, Spain and Potrugal. On the way back to their hometowns, it was not uncommon for Biak people to meet Chinese traders who wanted to go to the same destination. But before passing through or stopping to settle on Biak Island, the Biak tribe community, has a request that must be fulfilled, namely they must leave something in the form of goods or objects as a condition that they are accepted by the Biak tribe community. Then foreign ceramic objects such as plates and jars were given by Chinese Chinese traders to the Biak tribal community. Biak people call these foreign ceramic objects “Benbepon”. The research method used is linguistic anthropology which aims to examine language with a cultural, social context in the naming of benbepon motifs in the ararem tradition of the Biak tribe. then the data is analyzed using Barthes' semiotic theory, namely denotative and connotative meanings to find out and describe the symbolic meaning and form of benbepon motifs and shapes. Based on the results and discussion of the History of Chinese Arrival. benbepon is classified by the Biak tribe based on age, motif, shape and sound. The results of the classification are ten types of benbepon, but in the Biak tribe's ararem tradition which is used until now only 8 types of benbepon such as the embossed dragon snake motif (Benkorben), koi/gold fish (Benkarip), roses (Paramasi/Resa-resa Paramasi), paradise occupying tifa, to the honai house (Benayemer). Then the benbepon motif has a symbolic meaning in the ararem tradition for the Biak tribe, which symbolizes prosperity, protection, luck, fertility, peace, and self-identity that must be preserved. Benbepon also has anthropological aspects in the ararem tradition, namely the acculturation process in the benbepon and the function of benbepon in Biak society.  Keywords: Benbepon,Ararem Tradition,Chinese Traders

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pattern of subject ellipsis in the clauses of Denny Caknan’s song lyrics. Ellipsis is a linguistic phenomenon in which a word or linguistic unit is not explicitly mentioned, but its meaning can be understood from the context. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this research collects data through the listening method and note-taking technique, which are then analyzed using techniques such as direct element division, inversion, ellipsis, and substitution. The findings indicate that subject ellipsis in these lyrics results in a more concise and effective narrative, although it requires contextual understanding from the listener. The listener’s understanding of subject ellipsis is highly dependent on the context of the preceding lyrics and their ability to fill in the missing syntactic elements, making them an active part of the interpretation process. These findings are expected to enrich linguistic studies on ellipsis and contribute to further research on subject ellipsis. Keywords: ellipsis, syntax, pragmatics, song lyrics, Denny Caknan

Abstract

Suprasegmentals are language sounds that accompany phonemes, which can be in the form of sound pressure, length-shortness, and sound vibrations associated with speech segments. Suprasegmentals in this study includes the frequency, intensity, and duration of the sounds produced. This study aims to analyze the differences in frequency, intensity, and duration of the sounds produced by male and female speakers in pronouncing Toba Batak imperative sentences, namely: “beta hita tu topi tao!” which means ‘let's go to the lakeside!’. This research method uses an instrumental approach by maximizing Praat software in analyzing frequency, intensity, and duration. The population and sample taken in this study is the voice of one native male and female speaker. The results of the analysis of this study show, namely: (1) the frequency of male speakers' voices is lower than female speakers; (2) the intensity of male speakers' voices is smaller than female speakers; and (3) the duration of male speakers' voices takes longer than female speakers to say the sentence. From this research, it can be seen that male and female voice differences have relevance to suprasegmental because both focus on the nonsegmental aspects of language, which play an important role in verbal communication. Keywords: suprasegmentals, frequency, duration, intensity

Abstract

This research analyzes lexical equivalence in news articles about the Labubu phenomenon published on Kompas.com, focusing on how linguistic elements adapt to convey international cultural trends to local audiences. Lexical equivalence, as a key component of discourse cohesion, ensures the clarity and consistency of information in news texts. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study examines ten selected articles, identifying and classifying the types of lexical equivalence, such as repetition, synonymy, antonymy, collocation, and hyponymy. Findings indicate that affixation, including prefixes, suffixes, and combined affixations, is the most dominant strategy used in lexical adaptation, facilitating nuanced interpretations of cultural phenomena like Labubu. The affixation process creates lexical equivalence relevant to Labubu dolls, reflecting cultural, psychological, and marketing contexts in portraying scarcity, social actions, and opinions. This study provides insights into effective strategies for media adaptation of global cultural content and underscores the importance of lexical cohesion in maintaining credibility and accessibility in news discourse. Keywords: lexical equivalence, cultural adaptation, Labubu phenomenon, discourse cohesion, Kompas.com
