Abstract

In the 21st century, scientific literacy is crucial for students as it connects science to real-life issues. The Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) approach can be used through contextual learning to enhance students' scientific literacy. This approach involves developing teaching materials based on SSI and for this research, the focus is on disasters and mitigation to increase preparedness in disaster-prone areas. The research aims to develop and test the feasibility and practicality of SSI-based teaching products using the Research and Development (R&D) method, specifically the ADDIE model. The novelty of the SSI e-module is in the issues discussed, the interactive and varied material, and the quiz features. These can improve students' scientific reasoning by involving them in real-life problem-based discussions relevant to everyday life, thus encouraging critical analysis, decision-making, and collaborative problem-solving.Data was collected through interviews with teachers to analyze their needs and through questionnaires distributed to students, feasibility tests, and product practicality tests. The results showed 90% material feasibility, 100% concept correctness, 95% media feasibility, and 96% question feasibility, all falling within the "very feasible" category. Additionally, an empirical test of the questions through validity testing resulted in 10 valid and 5 invalid questions, with a reliability test yielding a score of 0.717.The score is included in the high category, it needs to be increased to the very high category (0.80 ≤ r ≤ 1.00) by evaluating the material, design, and structure of the module. The product's practicality was tested on 2 science teachers and 32 class VIII students, and achieved percentages of 94% and 89% respectively, categorizing it as "very practical". In conclusion, the e-modules developed in this research are deemed very feasible and practical for facilitating scientific literacy in students.

Abstract

The complexity of thermochemistry and its abstract nature is often difficult for students to study. To address this issue, we designed an Android-based application using Kvisoft FlipBook Maker and AppsGeyser to help their study process. This research focuses on improving students' understanding of thermochemistry through digital learning tools. Using the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate) development model, we created an interactive learning module in the form of an android application. The reason for using an android application is because there is no longer a risk that the learning module will be hidden or forgotten with other files, the application can also be accessed easily as long as it has an android device. Previous research has also indicated that a digital teaching tool can improve the understanding of chemistry learning due to attractive visualization and self-learning opportunities. This study involved validation from media and material experts, as well as assessment from chemistry teachers and students of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Yogyakarta. The final product received high validation scores, with 97.8% from media experts, 93.3% from material experts, and 90.3% from chemistry teachers. In addition, 95.8% of students responded positively to the app. These findings suggest that the developed application is highly effective for independent student learning and can enhance engagement with thermochemistry concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an E-Booklet utilizing endophytic fungi isolated from the roots of Phalaenopsis amabilis to improve learning outcomes of Kingdom Fungi material for class X MA Zainul Bahar students, Bondowoso. The research method used is the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The isolation results show a diversity of endophytic fungi that are potentially authentic learning resources. This e-booklet is organized in an interactive and contextual manner, integrating isolation result data into teaching materials that are in accordance with the Merdeka Curriculum. The novelty of this research lies in the utilization of endophytic fungi from the roots of P. amabilis as a source of local content that has not been widely explored in learning media. In addition, the use of the E-Booklet format based on original research data provides added value in the form of a scientific approach directly from the field, which is not yet available in conventional learning resources. This study involved 27 grade X students using the one-group pretest-posttest design method and an expert validation test. Validation by experts gave the material a score of 91% (very valid) and media 87% (very valid), while the practicality test based on student questionnaires reached 85% (practical). N-gain analysis of 0.82 (high category) shows that this E-Booklet effectively improves students' learning outcomes on the Kingdom Fungi material.

Abstract

This study addresses the gap in understanding how personal context influences students' numeracy skills, particularly in the context of the Minimum Competency Assessment (MCA) in Indonesia. The research problem centers on the challenge of engaging students with numeracy tasks that are not only mathematically relevant but also relatable to their personal experiences. While the MCA assesses mathematical reasoning and problem-solving, students often struggle to apply these skills to real-world scenarios, particularly when the context of the problems is unfamiliar or disconnected from their daily lives. This study aims to analyze the numeracy skills of eighth-grade students in solving problems with a personal context within the Minimum Competency Assessment (MCA). The study employed a mixed-methods design, integrating both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were analyzed using content validity analysis (Aiken's V) and inter-rater reliability (Cohen's Kappa) to assess the validity and consistency of the MCA questions. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the students' numeracy scores. For qualitative analysis, semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore students' reasoning and problem-solving strategies. The triangulation of data from the MCA tests and interviews provided a comprehensive understanding of how students engaged with mathematical problems and applied their numeracy skills in real-world contexts. A total of 17 eighth-grade students were selected, and three students from each numeracy category; high, medium, and low were chosen using a categorization method based on standard deviation. Results showed that students with high numeracy abilities demonstrated effective problem-solving and reasoning skills, while students with medium and low numeracy abilities struggled with complex problems and real-world applications. The study suggests that while personal context can enhance student engagement, its effectiveness depends on a solid foundation in numeracy skills. The findings recommend a balanced approach in teaching, strengthening foundational skills alongside contextualized learning. In conclusion, while the personal context in MCA increases student engagement and relevance, particularly among high-performing students, its effectiveness is contingent on a solid foundation in basic numeracy skills. A balanced approach that strengthens basic numeracy skills while incorporating personal contexts is necessary to foster critical thinking and effective application of mathematics across all ability levels.

Abstract

Various studies on relational thinking have been conducted, but none have explicitly examined students’ learning obstacles from the ontogenetic, epistemological, and didactical perspectives. This study aims to identify and describe students’ learning obstacles in relational thinking within arithmetic, algebra, and linear equations in one variable. This study employs a qualitative approach guided by Miles and Huberman’s framework, which involves data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The study used tests and interviews to gather information. Data were collected in August 2023 from 32 students of 8th grade at SMPN 17 Tangerang Selatan. Analysis revealed that students encountered ontogenetic, didactical, and epistemological obstacles when solving mathematics problems requiring relational thinking. The ontogenetic obstacle manifested as a lack of confidence in their own mathematical abilities. The didactical obstacle arose from the use of instructional materials and learning designs that did not facilitate development of relational thinking ability. The epistemological obstacle was evident in students’ failure to understand arithmetic and algebraic operation rules, inability to construct mathematical models from everyday situations, and misinterpretation of the equals sign (“=”) as an operational command rather than a symbol of equality. Teachers therefore require additional learning resources to reinforce students’ understanding of the concept of equality. Future research should focus on developing and evaluating instructional designs specifically aimed at enhancing students’ relational thinking ability.
